(It doesn't matter if this is public or private) but uh, you mentioned self harm and I also know you have a lot of tattoos so I was wondering, can they tattoo over self-harm scars? Or scars in general? Because if it can be done that would be a huge help to me (I have a lot of scars on my legs and arms)

I’m going to answer this publicly because I think this is a very good question! Tattoos can totally cover scars!! I haven’t self harmed in about a year and here’s what my thigh looks like:

A lot of my scars are raised but they are still able to be covered by a tattoo. (As soon as I get the money together I want a blackbird, both because I like the meaning and also I am THAT much trash)

Here are some of my faves:

These are just a few that I’ve seen through various websites.

But tattoos are a GREAT way to cover scars and have a long lasting piece of art instead. Also, tattoos are just amazing in general.

My love for Paget Brewster is unending. She has been a huge influence on my life in the past year and I was so lucky to get to meet her and tell her how she saved my life.

My tag for her is #Gorgeous Human Peacock and the peacock feather is actual said to ward away bad spirits.

The quote is from my favourite tweet from her and it’s a reminder to be true to yourself despite people judging you.

This tattoo is my constant reminder that PVB told me she believes in me and that it does get better.

One Tattoo Story a Day:

So I’ve talked (at length) about how TAH [changed/saved] my life. This show was the only thing that kept me going after my last suicide attempt. It brought me laughter in the darkest of times and I owe the Bens and this cast everything.

In April I had a chance to see the final show at the Largo in LA. It was an experience I will never forget. The feeling of family between audience and cast alike was unlike anything I have ever experienced. During intermission the fans all flocked together, some crying, some reminiscing, some simply with smiles, accepting this was the end of an era.

I keep saying I get tattoos to mark important events in my life. My trip to LA was such an experience and so deeply important to me I knew I needed to document it in ink.

I decided to get a tribute to TAH. POW from Sparks Nevada and CLINK from Beyond Belief. They have quickly become two of my favourite tattoos. Reminding me of how far I’ve come since that suicide attempt and how much this show was a life line.

I was lucky enough to get to go to New Zealand for the final live show in Wellington in May. I met the cast and I showed the Bens my tattoos, Blacker said “Those are humbling but crazy.” Paget loved them too, along with the rest of the cast.

This way, even though the show may be over, I still carry a little reminder with me every day.

To years of memories, here’s to us.

One of my all time favourite movies is Moulin Rouge. I once watched it 5 times a day for an entire summer. I estimate I have seen it nearly 500 times now. I always knew I wanted a MR tattoo but I didn’t want to get the stereotypical wind mill.

I did some research and elephants represent good luck and independence and strength. I decided to get this elephant as a tribute to Moulin Rouge but also for what it represents.

The lyrics “Come What May” are both representative of my favourite song from the film and also a reminder that I can get through anything, “Come what may...”

I got this tattoo when I first became homeless last October. It was my reminder that even though I was living in a car I could survive. And I did.

I love Studio Ghibli films and they have been a big part of my life. When I’m sad I always pull out Totoro or Ponyo or Princess Mononoke. They have gotten me through a lot of hard times.

When Miyazaki announced retirement last year I knew I wanted to document my love somehow. So I got this Totoro!

I’d like to add some other Ghibli characters later on. But for now I have my happy little tree spirit and his chibi Totoro friend.

When I was in the pysch ward I made friends with an older woman whom I nicknamed D&T for “dark and twisty” (like Grey’s Anatomy).

After we got out we kept in touch and ended up dating. D&T became sort of our mantra of our psychosis/mania. Always dark and twisted.

She wanted to get a D&T tattoo so I designed her one first and then a couple of months later I got mine (not matching just same general idea).

I put mine on my foot so I always walk the dark and twisted path.

So my favourite word that Sadie Doyle says is "dinosáwr". And my favourite thing about Sadie Doyle is her love for Frank Doyle.

I also generally love dinosaurs. So I wanted to g et "rawr" because it means I love you in dinosaur! It's a cute little tattoo that makes me smile.

I designed this anchor as a reminder to stay grounded but to never sink. The quote means "Always Invincible" in Latin and is in reference to one of my favorite poems, Invictus .

The Roman numerals are for "42" which is the answer to life, the universe and everything. This is as close to a spiritual belief as I'll get. So this tattoo means a lot to me.

In January 2014 I had my first psychotic break and wound up in the psych ward. I was under the delusion that I was, in fact, the Doctor. I was hallucinating Rose Tyler and would have lengthy conversations with her while sitting alone in a room.

It was during this stay that I taught myself circular Gallifreyan. And would draw on pages and pages from my notebook in this script.

The day I got out of the psych ward I was hella manic. I wrecked my car TWICE in 30 minutes, went on a shoplifting bender, relapsed in self harm and got a tattoo.

It says “Bad Wolf” both because that’s my favourite arc from DW and also to always remind myself of what evils lurk just under the surface if I don’t take care of my disease.

For Halloween 2013 I was in Denver and my fave shop was having a $20 Halloween special with a bunch of lil designs.

I chose the werewolf because he looks like a hipster and then added “Spooky Scary” from my fave Halloween song “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” (yeah, the one from 30 Rock)

Just a fun little Halloween tattoo!

This is the best story behind any of my tattoos. So when I first started designing my half sleeve one of my managers at work asked “If I drew you something would you get it tattooed?” and I immedietley said “Absolutely.”

He pulled out a post-it note and drew what he believed to be Spongebob (see the one on the left) thinking I would NEVER get it tattooed.

I went to Colorado that summer and got my half sleeve and when I came home he was like “I KNEW you wouldn’t get my drawing!” But truthfully I had just forgotten to bring it.

My next trip to Colorado I brought it and welp…. now I have a Spongebob tattoo!

He was so shocked when I came home with an actual tattoo.

Challenge accepted.

My 13th tattoo was my literary half sleeve. I designed and drew the entire thing. Illustrations from my favourite children’s books by Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein and Dr Seuss.

Shel Silverstein: Falling Up, The Giving Tree, The Missing Piece, Hug of War Roald Dahl: The BFG, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox

Dr Seuss: Oh the Places You’ll Go, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax

Each one of these stories taught me a life lesson that helped shape me into who I am today. I also wanted a literary sleeve to match my literary inspired arm piece (Fawkes) on my left arm.

This one still needs to be finished but my artist is in Colorado so I don’t get to visit often.

After my divorce in 2011 I wanted to document that time in my life by getting a new tattoo because I use my art to mark important occasions. Imagine Me and You is one of my favourite movies and the star gazer lily has always been my favourite flower.

In the film there is a quote that the lily means ‘I dare you to love me’ so I got this rib cage piece to document my new lease on life as a single woman after being in a 7 year relationship.

So my mom wanted me to cover my tattoo for my sisters wedding this past weekend and I smeared massive amounts of make-up over it. Anyway, now all the lines on my tat are raised and they feel super cool. Like I can trace my fingers over my back/shoulder blade and feel the design. The skin's not red/irritated and I had ridges like this for months when it was fresh, so I don't think it's a problem. It just feels really awesome and is a great sensation thing.

Anon, I know EXACTLY what you mean! I have a couple of bits on each tattoo that scarred so when I get cold they will become raised and it’s so nice to run your fingers over them. Usually raised ink means the artist was heavy handed when doing your tattoo. That’s why usually it’s the black outlines that are raised most. Because black takes extra linework to get it to stick.

I have lavender behind my phoenix and it took 8 hours to do and I’ve gotten that part touched up twice because my skin just won’t hold that colour. Skin is different for each person!

But you’re right, it’s a really cool sensation.

So this one has a lot of backstory, bare with me:

When I was 18 I was, like most teenagers, fucking stupid. After my first  tattoo on my 18th birthday (1UP Mushroom), I was like ‘I NEED ALL THE TATTOOS!’ and like most 18 year olds, I sucked at money management. When I had $100 I said, ‘hell yeah tattoo money!’ and went to a random tattoo parlour at like 7pm on a weeknight and said ‘I want this Jedi Crest tattoo but I had literally no money’ the guy says ‘okay, I can simplify that, no problem’

An hour later I leave with a [Jedi Crest] on my ankle. It’s still bloody so I don’t REALLY look at it (I was also hella manic, okay?). It is SO bad, like BAD BAD. Non-symmetrical, blown out lines, over inked solid black. Truly a nightmare, even as a stupid kid who knew nothing about tattoos yet I thought it looked bad I call the guy who did it and he’s like ‘uhhh so actually I’m just an apprentice and I wasn’t supposed to tattoo unsupervised while the other artist was out of the shop, please don’t turn me in. I’ll do ANY tattoo for free.’

RED FLAG: If someone does a BAD tattoo on you, DO NOT go back to that person.

I went back to him, bc I was 18 and a free tattoo sounded rad AF. I got this (HORRIBLE tramp stamp). And guess what, it was over inked, non-symmetrical, and blown out. (Fool me twice, shame on me!)

I grew into my 20s, learned a SHIT ton about tattoos and started paying for quality tattoos all while hating my tramp stamp for 6 years... until I finally came up with a fix. To cover a solid black tattoo would have been VERY difficult, so instead I chose to add my favourite Pokemon. Jigglypuff is infamous for drawing on people with a marker when they fall asleep. So I added a Jiggly next to my tramp stamp like she drew it on me.

Now it’s one of my faves! I love my lil Jigglypuff!

I have loved the X-Files since I was a little kid and always wanted to document my favourite show with a tattoo. My artist is also a fan so I told him I wanted something involving the tattoo from ‘Never Again’ and gave him free reign over whatever else he wanted to do with her. I LOVE this tattoo so much. We added the X-Files infamous ‘X’ to her neck and changed the quote to better fit my needs. I love the pin-up style of this one.
