Another thing about Rhys’s performance as Stede - as soon as Stede comes out, one thing happens and one thing doesn’t. He becomes more visibly confident and self possessed AND he doesn’t become more stereotypical. Stede doesn’t get “gayer” when he knows he’s gay. He has the same mannerisms, same flamboyance, same bitchiness, same elegance, same awkwardness.
I can honestly see a less sensitive performer making Stede far more stereotypical and less authentic to himself.
Boyfriends who simply must descend the stairs with a bit of flare.
