But if you want my shorter, less glorious take on it? I think that, sure, the writers or network could decide they want to put Barry and Caitlin in a relationship for any number of reasons. But it would have nothing to do with Oliver and Felicity.
Barry and Iris are comic book canon royalty to a much bigger degree that Ollie and Dinah were. The Flash is structured as a romance between Barry and Iris to a much larger degree than Arrow was. It’s only season one, and Iris is clearly the be-all and end-all for Barry. In season one of Arrow, Oliver was getting his romance with McKenna scored to “Give Me Love,” so…
One argument that people give for SB is that WA isn’t popular and SB is somehow the next O/F, but that’s such a false equivalence. As much as haters would wish otherwise, Iris West is actually pretty damn popular. She’s got a pretty kickass defense squad if I do say so myself, and the media has been flooded with people pushing back on their campaign to make her look bad. The writers knew they messed up in their previous show and took a couple of steps to correct themselves this time around. Not enough, in my opinion, considering the media and certain fans were determined to hate Iris and Westallen the moment Candice was cast. (WONDER WHY.) But thankfully, this time around, the rest of the fans stepped up and made sure we put the blame on the writers and not the precious cupcake that is Iris.
So, considering that Flash is the highest-rated show on the CW, it’s not like they need to do a surprise hookup for ratings grabs. They’ve done a few fan-baiting episodes with them and I suppose those fans enjoyed them, but it didn’t set the world aflame or anything. The ratings remain strong and steady, and the show has been carefully crafted to ensure that huge plot shifts coincide with huge Westallen shifts. I mean, it’s pretty universally agreed that 1.09, 1.15 and 1.20 are the best episodes so far. They’re also the best Westallen episodes so far. WHAT A SURPRISE.
So, yeah, long story short: there’s no way to state factually that real Caitlin’s lips will never touch Barry’s. But it has nothing to do with that Arrow has done with Oliver and Felicity.
There’s also the point that while Dinah/Ollie is comic royalty almost to the extent of Iris/Barry, the relationships are vastly different. Up until the nu52, after Iris and Barry got married essentially they’ve always been together and their love for each other has fueled a lot of the big aspects of the Flash mythos (Wally being KF, pm everything to do with the speed force and time travel has revolved around their love and Iris’s family history). And even in the nu52 the person Barry was with instead of Iris has recently broken up with him and it’s pretty obvious they’re heading towards the pair of them getting back together.
Dinah and Ollie, despite their intense love for each other, very much have an on and off relationship. They fight a lot (and have sex a lot to make up for it) and then they break up for a while or someone dies and then they get back together (or someone namely Ollie comes back to the life then they get back together). Tbqh, if Arrow gets a shit ton of seasons they could easily rebuild their relationship and have them get back together later in the series and that would work for their relationship. Iris and Barry aren’t the type of couple to have a lot of actual relationship drama, most of their drama stems from outside problems not ones they cause each other.
Plus, Arrow you know has completely disregarded two thirds of its source material and so in all honesty should be held up as any sort of comparison to Flash comic canon wise as Flash is doing those characters so much more justice.

dude i was thinking about this, and i feel so pissed off at smallville for introducing oliver/chloe because even though i have nothing against that pairing (i actually like it) it’s probably the reason that arrow pushed so hard for oliver/felicity. and ugh it just makes me mad lmaooooooo.

I mean back in season 1 I ended up rooting for Merlance by the end of the season bc Tommy was better for her than Oliver, but you’d think after Tommy was out of the picture (especially since Laurel/Oliver hooked up at the end of the previous season?) That they would have started building the pairing back up (I mean Oliver still doesn’t deserve her but I like it better than him with pm anyone else whose alive…)

the whole love triangle business PISSED ME OFF THE MOST. like i know in my heart of hearts that tommy was so much better for her and i can understand why she pushed oliver away after tommy died but i still wish they could have been together but whatever. i’m /still/ holding out hope because i’m a trashy fucker and i can wait forever for green canary lmaoooo.
It was so upsetting ugh (mostly bc of the way it got handled at the end?) honestly this is one of those situations where an ot3 would be ideal. but yeah this is one of those situations where you’d think there would be a slow build back to their relationship? (which I think was there original intention) but that didn’t happen smdh
