hadestown orpheus and eurydice are so. she loves her cringefail husband. he looks like a 16 year old boy at his first prom. he plays wonderwall for her so good it solves climate change. she's a runaway from everywhere she's ever been and just wants him to take her home. he unionizes amazon. they are everything.
act i // act ii
Saw the Hadestown tour last night and I am still thinking about the height difference between Hades and Persephone, and the fact that after their dance Hades goes down to his knees and buries his face against her chest/stomach and she just holds him so close. So many feelings about it
I love how though they never mention Apollo in Hadestown, he's constantly there hinted at by the talk of Persephone in the sunlight and how that plays into Hades jealousy. Because obviously Persephone isn't cheating on him, but he "thinks of her in the arms of the sun" and then in Chant he sings about how the lights of Hadestown are now "brighter than the light of day". Cuz while nothing came of it, Apollo was one of the people mentioned to be in love with Persephone before she married Hades.
It's especially interesting considering that, while it's not explicitly mentioned in the musical, Orpheus is a son of Apollo, which brings more levels to Hades distaste for him as well as Persephone's defense. And the fact that he eventually lets him/makes him perform for him just because his wife vouched for him is! Very good, symbolism! Even before Epic III, Hades listening to Persephone about Orpheus is his first wake up call that his jealousy and loneliness is blinding him, and it's so good.
(L*re Olympus Stan's DNI, I don't wanna hear about the shitty version of Apollo there, this isn't about that!)
been listening to hadestown and I'm just the tiniest bit in love with Orpheus
and suddenly hades was only a man, singing...
thinking about how orpheus turning to look back at eurydice isn’t a sign of mortal frailness but a sign of love
“Eurydice, dying now a second time, uttered no complaint against her husband. What was there to complain of, but that she had been loved?” ― Ovid, Metamorphoses
This is true no matter the version you're reading.
1. Eurydice trips and Orpheus turns to help her because he loves her.
2. Orpheus cannot hear Eurydice behind him, and fearing that he's been tricked, turns to make sure she's there.
3. Orpheus makes it out of the Underworld, and so full of love and excitement to be with Eurydice, turns to embrace her, forgetting that they both need to be out of the Underworld.
No matter what happens in the story, Orpheus loses Eurydice because his love for her compels him to look.
HAPPY RE-OPENING TO THE CAST OF HADESTOWN !! ↳ 02.09.2021
I typically like what’s on the official soundtrack better for Chant (Reprise) because I think it flows a bit better but god I love the end of Persephone’s verse so so much- “Even when the bricks are stacked, love is blooming through the cracks. Even when the light is gone, love is reaching for sun...” and then she and Hades reach for each other and grasp hands and I!! get so emo!!
Ahh not to keep rambling about Hadestown, but like obviously the platform lowers to take Orpheus and the workers off the stage, BUT ALSO it leaves a huge hole/gap between Hades and Persephone and I just!! They aren’t on opposite sides of the hole the whole time but it does show how far they’ve drifted
I don’t know if it was for the sake of uniformity, or if it held deeper meaning, but I love that no matter what their gender, all the workers in Hadestown have the same cloth bindings over their chest. Like it implies a uniformity in death- that everyone is the same in death- but it’s also just a neat costume point. It’d be so easy to just have the girls wear it but they all do! I just really like the Hadestown costuming
I found this youtube comment and honestly,,,, true
