Mary's pacing the apartment when Shannon arrives. She doesn't still in her motion, doesn't even turn towards the door. Her shoulders are stiff, the line of her back rigid, her hands curled into fists in her pockets.
Shannon toes off her boots silently, hangs Mary's jacket on its hook at the door, takes a moment to brush the hair back from her forehead. It smells like battle in the apartment, Mary's boots kicked off in the entry still wet with blood, her shotguns on the kitchen table, combat gear hanging loose from her body.
"Mary–" she begins, but Mary shakes her head.
"Don't."
"Mary," she repeats, more plaintive, and Mary turns towards her. She's crying, tears carving rivulets in the ash that still cakes her face.
