Bucky is counting down the days until the end of the lease and spending as much time as he can at Steve's already-overcrowded apartment... Until one night he overhears his roommate ignoring a clear "no" from his latest one-night stand and decides to intervene.
Months after the Avengers' dispute in Germany, the team returns to the US and moves back into the tower. As always, everyone pretends that nothing happened. Tony is just fine with this. He's used to pretending, and he'll be damned if he lets any of them see him flinch.

Tony blinked into the semi-darkness, his heart kindly reminding him of how alive he was by attempting to punch straight through his ribcage in response to the soft, raspy voice. He knew it was fear and adrenaline, but stupidly instead of making a run for it Tony just stood there and thought of cartoons. His imagination had conjured up a visualization of his heart stretching out through his shirt and pounding away in the air all va-va-voom, as if he’d been struck with Cupid’s arrow.
This apparently was the best time for Bucky to make suggestive gestures, as the soldier patted his thigh lasciviously, “Why don’t you come sit on my lap, plenty of space right here.”
Tony Stark always wanted to know who the Soldier was. Now is his chance to get to know one Bucky Barnes. But is that really what he wants?
When he finds himself presented with a memory of his time with HYDRA, instead of recoiling in horror, these days the Winter Soldier tends to sigh wistfully. It was all so much simpler back then. Some jerk gives you a target, some bullets, winds you up like the good little automaton you were meant to be, and off you go. If everything went according to plan, people were dead, and you went back on ice. Rinse, repeat.
“Wait, hold on,” Tony said, his heart leaping in anticipation. “Are you suggesting he and I fuck? Because I am not interested in that.” The Soldier whimpered, his eyes going all soft and wounded, and Bucky looked about the same, obviously worried he’d made a huge mistake. “If, however, you’re suggesting all three of us fuck in an insane attempt to help you love and accept yourself? I am completely down.”

prompt: post cacw. once tony is given enough time to handle the grief of civil war, steve and tony make amends, and in turn, naturally, he invites them all back and they’re functioning again. nothing like the way they used to be. bucky’s still got a problem. that’s the winter soldier. the words are still there and he could be triggered at any moment of time. so B.A.R.F is used to help bucky still channel himself through the soldier. maybe bucky’s therapy requires bucky to switch to the winter soldier, figure out how to take out his programming. maybe tony needs to be involved with that for the science to work?? i don’t know. so in these “sessions” with the winter soldier, tony comes to realize he’s not a murdering robot. he’s actually just as much a victim as bucky is? yes, it’s winter who killed his parents, and countless others, but he was a weapon. a weapon with no semblance of a choice. he doesn’t know what he is, or why he does, it’s simply his job to obey. it kinda fucks tony up, given how much of a bleeding heart he is. and maybe he helps the winter soldier make little choices for himself? maybe it starts out simple with picking between two types of colors, then foods, then into something more complicated than that.
bucky in turn feels better? his headaches start fading, he’s in a lot more control of his body, and while the winter soldier can’t be erased yet. the constant fear surrounding him starts to dissipate. tony meanwhile gets attached, like he always does, and while the soldier isn’t equipped to return those feelings, it doesn’t stop tony from pining. and while soldier/bucky are attractive, i really want the attraction between them to be emotional, guttural, something that can’t be helped and has little or nothing to do with actual physical attraction.
maybe once soldier makes a lot more of his own choices, tony figures out a way to make the soldier go away forever? or figures out his programming? maybe this is an angsty, fucked up fic where he has to say goodbye to the soldier and cut the cord so bucky barnes could live his life like he deserves????
bonus if they get a goodbye scene and tony is transparent about what he has to do. and all the soldier really does his smile and go “i know.” and asks to kiss him? that’s the last and final choice he wants to make.
