The ppeople who always complain about Steve leaving Bucky only see Bucky as Steve's one and only Bestie. In their eyes, Steve isn't allowed to care about anyone else but Bucky.

I agree with your post from start to finish. I will never get over the fact that Steve didn't tell Sam. We saw how Sam and Steve became fast friends and created a connection but in the end all Steve did was give Sam the Shield and he didn't even think about how giving him the Shield will affect him in any way. And to all the people who say," how do you know Steve didn't tell Sam what he was planning ?". Sam's reaction in Endgame spoke volumes. He was concerned about his bestie and thought something horrible happened to him. Sam was not calm like Bucky was because Bucky knew what Steve was planning.

And Bucky confirmed in TFATWS that Steve told him what he was planning. it seems as though Sam missed that memo. I loved the show but i wished we had gotten to see how Sam really felt about Steve being gone and that he didn't even tell him. Someone who had Steve's back from day one.

I could go on but i think i ranted long enough. Thank You for your beautiful blog and that wonderful post :)

honestly you don’t have to thank me for that. i think it’s bugging me more and more lately because we have cishets constantly going out of their way to invalidate sam.

saying steve only left bucky is basically erasing sam from steve’s life. in the comics, steve is wholly dependent on sam. like -- it’s nuts how stupidly close they are. and i always thought the films kinda displayed the same until endgame.

like i’ve never once looked at steve as a character and thought, bucky is the only thing that matters to him, because it’s not true.

and the so-called steve fans who genuinely believe that (and trust me, a lot of people).  i’m on this discord right, and this girl goes, ‘i can’t believe steve left sam the shield and bucky and sam treated bucky like crap, that’s why i couldn’t get through tfatws’ and of course, me being me, i didn’t take that very well. mostly because a) you can detect the racism from a mile away and b) when ppl say shit like that, it’s up to us in the fandom to correct them. because -- if you don’t, microaggressions will keep happening.

the fact that people call themselves bucky fans and still consider him a piece of property for steve to hand down? gross af.  and because i called that out, i’m mean and nasty and aggressive. :(

Sometimes I really get pissed off when I see posts about people complaining about Steve’s ending in Endgame. And every complaint I’ve ever seen thus far goes like this: “Omg, how dare he leave Bucky all alone by himself??”

“I CANNOT BELIEVE HE LEFT BUCKY!” “STEVE LEFT HIS BUCKY?? STEVE WOULD NEVER” Cool. Steve left his best friend behind to go live his life and yall wanna commit murder. I get it, that’s fine. It’s okay to feel passionate about your ships. However, I never see any of yall complain about Steve’s treatment of Sam? There’s a couple of points I wanna make, so lemme list them one by one.

  • - Bucky is his own person. His life doesn’t revolve around Steve. He’s a man of his own agency. Even if you ship him with Steve, Bucky is allowed to feel heartbreak and heal from that without his entire character being dependent on Steve.
  • - Steve is his own person. While shippers tend to believe that Steve’s entire focus was Bucky and Bucky alone, they are quick to erase other valid people he’s extremely close to and loves deeply. The mains being Nat, Sam, and Wanda. Steve has many people in his life that he would do anything for. It’s not just Bucky. Bucky was the catalyst in the movies, sure, but if Bucky’s predicament was replaced with Nat or Sam, you best believe Steve Rogers would make the exact same decisions for them. Steve’s entire life isn’t dependent on Bucky. And vice versa.

So when Steve makes the decision to go back in Endgame, it’s not about Bucky. It’s about Steve making a choice for himself, and he did the responsible thing and he talked to Bucky and told him what he was going to do. Steve was not wrong for leaving in Endgame. Steve was wrong for not telling Sam.

When Sam first met Steve, he was (is still) a recovering vet. Sam and Steve became fast friends and it took Sam no time at all to decide that he’s willing to risk his life over and over again for Steve Rogers. That’s not even the beginning of Sam’s devotion or loyalty. Sam then spends the next two years of his timeline not going back to his own life. He’s searching the world for Bucky (as stated in AOU). He doesn’t need to do this, but he does it for Steve because he’s a good friend, but more than that, he’s a good man. Then, he refuses to sign the accords and sacrifices himself and gets tossed in an underwater prison. I don’t even want to get into what they did to Sam down there. If the raft is anything like the raft in the comics, he was probably tortured and waterboarded for shits and giggles. And even after being imprisoned, Sam smiles, and decides to quietly and discreetly save the world with Steve and Nat.  Sam’s loyalty, Sam’s endurance, Sam’s love -- all of that was tossed in the garbage without a second thought by Steve Rogers. I don’t care if people say ‘well, he gave sam the shield’ LMAO What the fuck does that matter? The Shield means shit all to Sam. I can’t imagine the actual pain Sam must’ve gone through once he realized that the white man he literally spent almost a decade helping and saving gave no real shits about him. Only Bucky was worth the goodbye and honesty. Sam wasn’t.  So when ya’ll complain about Steve leaving little Binky behind -- I can’t help but laugh at yall. That’s what you’re mad about? If I was Sam -- I too would’ve gotten rid of that dirty ass shield as fast as I can.

The way Sam talked to Karli, gentle but firm, was so great on so many levels. She lashed out telling him to not be condescending to her, to not treat her like a kid, which I think ties in with how she has so much responsibility on her shoulders and probably had to grow up really fast, taking a mature stance and quickly assuming people will talk down on her or treat her like she's stupid or incompetent, a "child in adult shoes" if you will, and she fights against that, wanting and needing to be taken seriously.

The actress, Erin Kelleyman, is 22 herself, so if we suppose that Karli is too, she was around 16 or 17 when the Blip happened, and she had to fend for herself while the world was in ruins. In those years she was supposed to go to school and have friends, she stole the serum, used it on herself, lead a group and gathered supplies, and she took care of others while she was barely an adult herself.

And here's Sam, who's worked with soldiers with trauma before and who stands up for her despite of the things she did, who wants to help her and talk. He recognizes what she essentially is: a soldier with trauma.

He talks to her gently, but keeps his message out in the clear along with his intentions: I agree with your stance, but I can't get behind the killing, and I want you to stop. He doesn't sugar coat it but he doesn't confront her harshly either, keeping it nuanced and reasonable because he knows that while they see Karli as unreasonable, Karli sees them as unreasonable too, and Sam breaks that cycle by showing her that he's open for her side of the story, and in return Karli tries to explain it to him and show him what she means.

You can see her go along, you can see Karli genuinely following and processing the conversation and build this kind of trust with Sam, as she says later, "I trusted him".

Sam treats her gently because she's been through so much, but also firm and direct because of that same reason. She does know what she's talking about, which Sam knows, but he also knows she's just been through so much in such a vital part of her life that it's shaped her, and the serum probably had its hand in it as well (I think it amplified the anger and frustration she already felt).

And he was so close. He was so close to getting through to her. He knows about the building but he doesn't harshly pursue her for it because he understands that won't help right now, pushing for that won't make her understand, so he tries a different approach.

That scene was just amazing, and the way Sam was so open and kind and trying to make a joke, but still keeping to his stance really moved me. Anthony Mackie's performance just never stops to make me emotional in all the good ways. That man is amazing.
