words: 3.6k | percabeth | chapter 1

summary: Annabeth never imagined herself as a cheerleader and neither did anyone else. But throughout her experience she finds love not only in the sport and for her teammates, but in her best friend too.

Annabeth found herself standing alone in the middle of her future high school gymnasium, a pamphlet in hand that listed all of the different clubs and sports the school had to offer. It was April, which meant it was time for freshman orientation for all the eighth graders. After a long and boring assembly and quick tour of campus, the small intimidated students were corralled into the gymnasium for an activities fair.

She, Percy, and Grover started out in a group but as they walked around all the different tables they began to split off, different clubs or sports gaining their attention. As Annabeth surveyed the room she saw Grover at the environmental club table and Percy was standing in line at the table for boys basketball. Basketball huh? Annabeth thought. She’s only ever seen the black-haired boy play a few times when they were at summer camp.

Just as she was about to make her way toward them, someone- a girl- called out to her from her left.

Christmas prompts: “we’re strictly ‘platonic’ but we’re snowed in and omg we have to repopulate the earth!” for percabeth, please!

As if the holidays aren’t already the most stressful time of the year, the heater gives out just when the temperature drops to twenty degrees and Annabeth is not happy.

“Well, this is just ridiculous.” She manages with some difficulty against the biting cold as she glares at her unresponsive radiator. As though it’s any less ridiculous that she’s talking out loud to it. She shrugs her favourite purple puffer over her shoulders and pulls a lavender beanie over her head before settling down on the floor.

There’s a distant memory, locked away somewhere- of her dad telling her how it’s important for every driver to know how to change a tyre. If you own a car, you need to know when something is wrong, and you need to know how to fix it, he’d said. Annabeth had liked that- she would grow into a strong, independent woman who could change her own tyres and fix her own engines- or so she’d thought- and then she’d gone right ahead and ignored her father’s advice. Way to go, Annabeth, she thinks drily. Maybe if she’d learned the basics of central heating.

It’s only one evening, she reminds herself. One evening, and she’ll be in marginally warmer San Francisco, where she can replace the cold of her broken radiator with the iciness of her family. She can deal with the present situation when she comes home in two weeks. She spends a fair chunk of her time scowling at the wall and being angry at her dad’s only useful piece of advice; and is only drawn out of her thoughts when she hears her phone vibrate loudly against her wooden table.

“Hello?” She says through chattering teeth, not bothering checking the caller ID. She’s too busy being inconvenienced by the phone call.

“What are you doing, sitting in an ice bath in the dead of winter?”

little victories

The first Capture the Flag came an entire four months after the Battle of Manhattan. The campers who’d weren’t ecstatic about training, strategizing or fighting for a while post-war, but you can only separate demigod from bloodlust for so long. By the time schools had closed for winter break, it seemed every single camp-goer was itching for the chance to take each other down again.

Annabeth Chase was no different, her motivation only fueled by the fact that the Athena cabin didn’t currently hold a flag. They’d always had a flag under her leadership, but she’d been preoccupied with war-prep even before things got serious and Malcolm, her second-in-command had lost their precious banner to Hermes. Hermes!

It was this desperation, along with the incentive of a worthy opponent for the next week, that led her to form an alliance so brilliant and so unheard of that her siblings nearly booted her off as head counselor when they heard.
