Hello! I'd like to share with you a character work game! I call it "Six Secrets" and honestly it's a work in progress but I'm sharing it anyway

List six secrets that your character has.

  • 1 is an open secret
  • 2 is a secret the people close to your character know
  • 3 is a secret that your character wouldn't really care about getting out
  • 4 is a secret exactly one person knows anything about
  • 5 is a secret no one knows about but they sort of want to come out/to tell someone
  • 6 is a secret no one knows and they desperately don't want anyone to know about.

You can also decide who knows and how

The secrets don't have to have anything to do with your actual plot! The secrets can have super low or super high stakes! It doesn't matter! But you will absolutely have a better idea of your character's intentions and state of mind, and you may wind up coming up with some new plot points/obstacles to play with

hey guys send me some drabble prompts. I'm gonna write some little things with Dorian and Lyndon while WRWS works itself out. they can be bittersweet or just bitter or just sweet

in exchange I will give you this song that makes me think of them and that thought is highly aided by the band name

Check the writing prompts tag on my blog, there are a ton of lists. I like to roll virtual dice to decide which to use.

HARD-TO-FIND HURT / COMFORT ACTION PROMPTS.

a selection of some of my favorite underrepresented situations and actions for one of my favorite tropes! feel free to add + REVERSE to any of the prompts to change the situation and provide context as necessary. do not add to this list.

CRADLE : sender picks up the injured / unconscious receiver and holds them close to their chest, carrying them to safety.

GUARDIAN : facing down a threat, sender pushes receiver back with an arm, moving to stand in front of them and protecting them with their own body.

TENDER : receiver wakes up to sender caressing them gently; a hand carding through their hair, brushing hair off their forehead, a hand on their cheek, a thumb swiping under their eye.

SHELTER : seeing a threat barreling toward them (such as a storm, the shockwave from an explosion, or a building they’re in collapsing), sender holds the injured / incapacitated receiver close, turning their back to the threat to bear the brunt of the impact instead of the receiver.

FLICKER : sender thinks they’re too late to save receiver and begins to mourn them / sinks in defeat and grief, holding them close, only to find through a simple action (a cough, a twitch of a hand, a murmured word) that they haven’t left them after all.

DELIRIUM : receiver wakes up to sender’s relief, only for receiver to not believe it’s really sender (that they’re imagining sender or that they don’t think sender would come for them) or that they’re finally safe.

CONCEAL : both muses have been injured or have fallen ill, though sender keeps their injury / illness secret in favor of taking care of receiver. however, as receiver gets better, sender’s injury / illness worsens from lack of care, and they wind up collapsing, their injury / illness fully revealed.

GUIDE : sender has been injured, but their skills are needed to help with the muses’ current situation (an escape plan, tending a wound, or diffusing a weapon, for example). sender has to walk receiver through the procedure, all the while trying to stay conscious.

SAVIOR : receiver is at the mercy of a threat, and all seems lost, only for sender to suddenly burst in and come to their rescue, bearing weapons and all the protective spirit they can muster, to the relief / confusion / anger of receiver.

LAST RESORT : injured / sick and alone after an encounter with a threat or a run-in with a dangerous situation, sender finds themself at receiver’s door, coming to them because they have nowhere else to go.

OC/Worldbuilding asks for your inner social science nerd

I wanted to develop a little tool for creating new characters, but instead of the more typical approach, I figured I’d put a slight social science cant on it. Feel free to use if you might find them helpful. 1. How does your OC make ends meet? What do they do for a living? How is their occupation viewed in the social context they’re in? Does it come with social prestige or financial comfort, and are these two things aligned in the society you’re writing, or are they separate metrics? 2. How does your OC communicate? Are they monolingual or multilingual? What is the linguistic environment they’re in? If they’re monolingual, is there a social penalty for only speaking one language, or is it the norm? If they’re multilingual, which of their languages or sociolects has the most/least prestige? Is there a separation between written and oral forms of the language? Can your OC blend in or does their language mark them in some way? What are their levels of fluency, and how do they feel about them? 3. What is you OC’s concept of social debt? What constitutes a sense of social obligation for your character? Is it based on individual feelings or collective principles? What do they do when they feel like they owe someone? Are they likely to default on a social obligation, or repay it? What are the costs of either approach in the society you’re writing? 4. What does it take for your OC to consider someone a friend? What constitutes friendship in the society you’re writing, what expectations does it come with, and how does your OC fit into that structure of expectations? Do they make friends easily or do they struggle? How intimate is a friendship for them, and what does it include?

5. What does it take for your OC to consider someone kin? What constitutes kinship in the society you’re writing, and how does your OC relate to that set of cultural expectations? Is kinship defined only by blood, or through other forms of social intimacy? Are there symbolic gestures that might establish a kin-like relation? What is family for your OC? 6. What are your OC’s religious beliefs? Are they aligned with the beliefs of the society you’re writing, or are they orthogonal? Does your OC question their convictions, or do they feel a degree of certainty? Does your OC feel a personal connection to a sense of divinity, or is religion empty social ritual for them? 7. What does your OC consider unspeakable and/or repugnant? What are the topics or issues your OC finds viscerally difficult or impossible to talk about? Are these topic socially unacceptable, or is it personal? What do they react to with revulsion ahead of any intellectualized response? 8. How does your OC approach the line between public and private? What sorts of things does your OC not share with anyone, what might they share with the people closest to them, and what do they happily share with anyone who might ask? What is their definition of property if they have one? In turn, does your OC think they belong to something as well? (A state, a collective, a cause, a person, etc) 9. What would it take for your OC to change their opinion? Does your OC change their worldview often or are they set in their ways? What does it take for them to change their mind? Do they admit they were wrong, and if so, under what circumstances? How do they handle it? What do they do when their beliefs are threatened? 10. What social persona does your OC perform most frequently, and when do they show other aspects of themselves (and to whom)? Is your OC code-switching between social persona depending on context, or do they stay consistent? Is social adaptation something they feel is necessary or are they uneasy about it? Do they believe that one has to be honest in their self-presentation, and is that aligned with the society you’re writing or is one expected to have multiple social “faces”? Under what circumstances does your OC show a different facet/angle of themselves?

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:

  1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
  2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
  3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
  4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
  5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
  6. Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
  7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
  8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
  9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
  10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Emotional intelligence of various blorbos, meow meows, and OCs. This could be a good writing exercise in the name of making characters not talk like therapists.

Stuff like:

Do they express their emotions in a healthy way?

Do they get overwhelmed by their own feelings?

Can they identify in words the emotions they're feeling?

Can they identify their emotional wants and needs?

Can they identify other people's emotional wants and needs?

Can they separate interpersonal physical needs (touch/contact, sex drive) from related emotions?

I want to make this into a fun character sheet or something. Preferably with room for all of a group/team/family/polycule of characters on the same sheet, because some of it is about interaction.

Feeling Questions

With [x] being an emotion of the askers choice.

  1. When did they most recently feel [x] and why?
  2. When did they most recently see [x] in another person? Why and how did that make them feel?
  3. What emotion do they hate/love feeling?
  4. What emotion do you most/least associate with them?
  5. What emotion do they dislike/like seeing in others?
  6. Do they try to evaluate their emotions?
  7. How well do they understand their feelings?
  8. What would cause them to feel [x] quickest?
  9. Can they read other people's emotions?
  10. Do they avoid feeling certain emotions?
  11. How much do they try to copy other's emotions? Is it intentional?

So, to those who have played through Fallout 4 and the DLCs:

NICK SPOILERS AHEAD

...you know that Nick is a synth and is pretty much aware of himself 24/7, he had at some point become aware he has a limited storage capacity.

So, I have recently added into my headcanon, that Ellie might have been "just another secretary" in the beginning, but she actually is Very Aware how vital she is to Nick. She doesn't just sort his paper files. He has to download the memories he wishes to keep, and she has to sort and protect those.

Secretaries before just saw his downloaded memories as "another file to sort", but Ellie realized these memories she holds on holotapes or other storage options are literally Nick's life. His experiences. His relationships.

Ellies holds Nick's soul in her hands.

And, she would die to protect it.

(Excuse me while my OC and Hancock make him very aware of that...)

Anyway, Ellie is the guardian of Nick's being.

I AM FURIOUS SHE WASN'T GIVEN A BIGGER STAKE IN THIS STORY, AND (I ask forgiveness of my aro peeps) I ABSOLUTELY WANT A "WE ALL KNOW SHE LOVES NICK AND HE IS TOO EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT IT" STORY TROPE.

Thank you.
