Warm Inside and Out
Ooo I think I did good with this one!
Hi! I'm Erica, and I like colors! You may know me from my main Back to the Future/ fandom blog @bg-sparrow, and if you do, you know I've taken to hyperfixating on perfecting moodboards lately.
I'll also entertain requests when I can!
Enjoy!
I'm starting a side blog for my moodboard hyperfixation. Join me! :D
mcfly july 2023 || day 20 "You're fired!"
xx.
Foot up on the coffee table, Jennifer dabbed at the wide gash on her right knee with peroxide and a cotton ball. It was healing, but she wished her limp had improved a bit more a week removed from the accident.
Marty’s hand had five more weeks in a cast. The monotone mental static from the concussion lingered. While they were assured he’d fully recover, his thoughts still cut in and out, noticeably delaying and hindering his speech.
Like a broken record.
“Jen? I’m sorry.”
She squeezed peroxide into the center of the wound.
Her lips thinned.
“I know, Marty.”
mcfly july 2023 || day 19 Burger King Crown
xix.
Marty stared into the gleaming rubies of “his” crown.
“I’m not…” He laughed. “I can’t be—“
“You are,” the Queen, his “mother” said. “For months, we have never lost hope that you would return to us.”
Marty swallowed, eyeing “his” portrait. He certainly resembled the missing Prince of the Hill, but the closest Marty had ever come to being royalty was wearing a Burger King crown while eating a Whopper Jr.
He took Doc aside.
“Is that the guy?”
“That we hit with the DeLorean when we got here?” Doc murmured as calmly as possible. “Oh, yeah. That’s him.”
mcfly july 2023 || day 17 "I suppose it was destiny."
xvii.
“Draw.”
Marty hesitated.
Never considered the future, poor Martin, God rest his soul.
But he was; Doc’s name reappeared on the tombstone photograph in the saloon. If he didn’t do something, they’d kill him.
Marty’s vision reddened seeing Doc held against his will. The corner of Buford’s mouth twitched with an unpleasant smile, blinding Marty’s better judgment.
He fired.
The recoil kicked back his wrist more than expected, but Marty maintained his hold.
Onlookers gasped so loudly that Tannen’s confidence in Eastwood’s unreliable aim made him search for blood or an entry wound.
Doc slumped in Buck and Ceegar’s arms.
I just wanted to let you know how much I admire and am inspired by your work! I've recently started trying my hand at mood boards, and while I continue to kind of "study" how they are put together, I was wondering if you might share a "rule of thumb" or tip for a beginner, perhaps pertaining to color coordination across the images. :)
Friend, this is so kind of you!! I'm honored that you enjoy the moodboards. Congrats on starting to make some of your own! The best general rule I can give is to just start making them and learning from your own mistakes, because nothing beats that :)
For color coordination, I usually pick a theme color (gold, for example) and try to choose pictures that have that color in them somehow. Some of the photos might be primarily gold, and some might just have a little touch of gold. Either way, it keeps the colors coordinated.
Next, I choose some secondary colors to complement the color scheme. If I want a radiant warm-toned board, I would blend the gold theme with hints of red, orange, or brown. If I want a cool-toned board, it would be blue, green, silver, lavender, etc. Sometimes I do single-toned (pure gold) or dual-toned (gold and black only, for example), but generally I go with at least three colors to make the board feel balanced. If you find a photo you really want to use, you can always color / shade / tint it to get the color you want. LunaPic is a great free editing site that allows you to do this!
As far as arranging my pictures, I try not to group photos that are too similar in the same corners of the board. For example, if I'm using 4 photos with a long-haired girl, I would spread those photos throughout the moodboard (maybe one in each corner, or in a T shape) so they feel natural. The same goes for photos with similar colors, shapes, symbols, etc. They should all be organized in a way that draws attention to the photo itself, not the ones around it.
Finally, I usually try to tell a story through my moodboards. Even if I don't know what the story is when I start, I come up with it as I'm going. This isn't necessary for boards that are based on existing stories (like fairytales or movies), but when you're doing something like a Bath and Body Works scent or a nursery rhyme with very little context, you can breathe life into that board by creating a story in your head. That keeps your photos consistent and connects with your audience by drawing them in, rather than just choosing a series of nine pictures with the same aesthetic.
I hope this is helpful! There are plenty of subtle tricks to the trade, but I'm sure you'll discover your own methods as you start. Hopefully these tips will be a good starting point :) Best of luck with your boards, and please let me know if I can give any more help!!
Thank you so very, very much! I am currently doing a creative challenge for July where I try to write a 100-word story to accompany the mood board, but like you said, I want it to stand on its own, not just support.
I appreciate all of these amazing tips (and you checking out some of my boards)!! I have been trying less to perfect each individual picture and use the help of filters here and there. I feel like I’m getting better results adjusting each photo, touching up lighting, then applying a faint filter to bring it together. It’s so much fun!
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me and encourage my latest obsession! Have a wonderful rest of the week, my friend!

Once Upon a Time in the South || Sarah Isaacs
Marty anticipated a few overzealous groupies with the rockstar life, but he hadn't expected to find one while strumming "Swanee River" at last year's Fourth of July festival. Sarah Isaacs still refused to take a hint; she was determined hers just weren't coming across.
