So, I got a note on dA from someone saying how they liked my take on chick!Ellis because I made her “Believable, grimy, and not slutty.” They then continued briefly on how much they hate genderbent MtF cosplayers generally because they make their costumes too sexy or slutty…
Now, the compliment was great. They liked my cosplay, and that obviously makes me happy, but…
Well, I see this statement of “I HATE SEXY GENDERBENDS” so often, and I guess I just don’t get why. Why does it bother people SO DAMN MUCH how someone else decides to make a costume? “Oh, they’re only doing it for attention!” So? Let them do it. If that’s the kind of attention they want, then what skin is it off your back if they go ahead and have it? “It gives the cosplay community a bad reputation!” As if. Have you seen what a lot female costumes look like anyway? They’re sexy as sin, man! So what if someone wants to make a conservative male costume into a sexier female counterpart? A lot of female costumes are little more than skin and spandex anyway, especially in the superhero world! “It over-sexualises women!” Oh, fuck off. I hate this excuse. Your views on sexualisation have no bearing whatsoever on another woman’s decision on what she can or cannot wear.
“They don’t put any effort into the costume! They just put on a short skirt and heels!” Yeah, some girls might, but again… so what? An L costume is essential a white shirt, jeans and a wig. Who cares what effort someone puts in? How does that affect you? Besides, I’ve seen some sexy genderbends that put a SHITTONNE of effort into the costumes! In fact, most of them I see look damned fantastic! I’ve never really considered doing a sexy genderbend costume before (the closest would be my femtrooper)… but you know what? I might just go ahead and do one. Because fuck the world, I do what I want.
BINDING: for trans*folk, genderbenders, cosplaying, drag, whathaveyou!
