SISKO: Well, I don't know what to say. But I guess I'll start by telling you all what an honor it is to receive this award.

When I first stepped foot onto Deep Space Nine, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I never thought of much of the shape of my head, but life has a funny way of surprising you.

When I shaved my head for the first time, I remember being very nervous. I couldn't stand the idea of making a mistake--even if it would grow back with time. I thought about my late wife Jennifer, and how she used to run her fingers through my hair. Would she even recognize me with a bald head?

It wasn't until my son Jake said something to me that my perspective began to change. There I was, standing in front of the mirror with the razor in my hand as I had many nights before, when my son came to me and said: "Dad, it's midnight. Are you still in the bathroom? It's just hair you know."

I'll never forget those words. Even at a young age, Jake had this way of distilling wisdom that went far beyond his years. I didn't want to believe it then, but I knew he was right. It wasn't Jennifer that I was losing by shaving my head, and it wasn't my fading youth either. It was as Jake had said--just hair.

That night, I made a commitment to keeping a bald head--a commitment that I have kept ever since.

This award isn't just a testament to my lack of hair. It is a celebration of diversity, of resilience, of the fiery spirit that exists within all life in the universe. It is a symbol of all that is good; a reminder that we are not alone in this galaxy.

So to my son Jake, and to everyone aboard this station, let me just say--thank you.
