How to Write Horror Guide

So I think I mentioned a while back that I’m writing a “how to write horror” guide. Here are some of the topics I plan to cover. Hit me up with your questions or suggestions for others – I’ll be putting together an outline and knocking out guides in the near future!

Worldbuilding is an essential part of any work of fiction. But especially for science fiction or fantasy, it’s the lifeblood of storytelling. But when worldbuilding fails, it can wreck your whole story, and leave your characters feeling pointless. Here are seven deadly sins of worldbuilding.

1. Not thinking about basic infrastructure.

How do they eat? What do they eat? Who takes away the garbage? Who deals with their bodily wastes? How do they get around? What do the majority of people do to survive? You’re not just constructing a society, you’re creating an economy. People don’t oppress each other for fun — usually, systems of hierarchy and oppression have an economic component to them. Maybe you need a lot of peasants to grow labor-intensive crops, or maybe you need lots of cannon fodder in your space war. Maybe your only source of protein is a weird fungus that needs to be tended by specially trained people. Maybe everybody’s eating algae. In any case, there’s nothing worse than a fictional world where there are elaborate social structures, which seem completely separated from the realities of food, shelter and clothing.

How to Write a Fight Scene Without Godmodding

It’s come to my attention that this can be a bit of a difficult thing to get a hang of, and makes for awkward writing. Due to the canon (& oc) characters that I play, and the genres of RP I’m interested in, I’ve accumulated a few years of experience in the subject.
*This is more so a guide about long drawn fight scene rather than drunken bar fights and such.
I’ll be explaining 2 ways of doing this, my go way and another I’ve do every once in a while. Each will have steps and recommendations along with them.

5 ways to increase/decrease suspense in your writing

Suspense is one of the trickier parts of writing to manage effectively because, as the author, you can’t experience your story the way a reader does. If you don’t have enough suspense, it can be difficult to keep your readers interested. If you have too much, frustrated and stressed-out readers might throw your book against the wall. Too much suspense can even backfire - if you try to keep your readers constantly on edge, they can stop taking things seriously and the end result is as though you never included any suspense at all.
So how can you tell if you’ve reached the right balance? Unfortunately, I can’t answer that for you. Some things really do require feedback from honest and insightful readers. Once you have that feedback, however, there are easy tricks to adjusting the level of suspense without a drastic re-write. Here are my five favorite methods.

Promises and Payoffs

  • INCREASE SUSPENSE by promising something huge and then giving your reader something unexpected. To borrow an example from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, imagine a teenage boy and girl sneaking into an empty building. Everything from the costumes to the lighting is designed to make you uneasy about the girl’s safety but, in the end, she’s the vampire. Give the audience something sensational and they won’t be disappointed that you didn’t deliver on what you originally promised.
  • DECREASE SUSPENSE by promising less than you plan to deliver. For example, if you plan to kill off a character as they walk through a dark alley, let them worry about being mugged rather than murdered. Not only is it less suspenseful, the payoff is more shocking.

Characters are Crucial

  • INCREASE SUSPENSE by shifting the focus to a character who’s more involved in the action or one who has more at stake. Even if you have a single POV character, another can come in and demand that character’s attention, along with the readers’.
  • DECREASE SUSPENSE by focusing on a character who’s more concerned with a secondary goal. Subplots are a fantastic way to give your readers some room to breathe.

Calm vs. Chaos

  • INCREASE SUSPENSE by cutting back on the action. Suspense flourishes in the quiet moments when your characters have time to think and to anticipate what may be in store for them.
  • DECREASE SUSPENSE by giving your characters a big, exciting mess to deal with. Even when that mess causes more problems and puts more pressure on your characters in the long run, you’ve still created an oasis where both they and the readers are too distracted to worry about how the big picture will pan out.

Devil’s in the Details

  • INCREASE SUSPENSE by concentrating on the details of the setting. Horror movies are great at this - every creak of a door, every shadow across a wall keeps the audience immersed in the experience and tense with anticipation.
  • DECREASE SUSPENSE by breaking the “show, don’t tell” rule and allow exposition to help you move things along. You don’t need to take readers through every aspect of your story in excruciating detail. It’s okay to gloss over some things and it helps readers relax because they know you’re not going to be springing any surprises on them just yet.

Ticking Time-Bomb

  • INCREASE SUSPENSE by imposing a deadline that your characters struggle to meet. It’s one of the oldest and most obvious tricks in the book, but very effective.
  • DECREASE SUSPENSE by allowing your characters to believe that the deadline has been met or pushed back. If they (and the readers) believe that they’ve accomplished their goal or bought themselves more time, it relieves pressure and allows everyone to relax until the truth’s revealed.

Listen, I don’t like to watch people be bullied or pushed from spaces. I don’t think fans should encourage people to kill themselves over projects, but people who are focusing on that minority of fans over the ones who expressed valid concern over the hurtful stuff in Age of Ultron and the other harmful things Joss Whedon has done are focusing on the wrong thing.

I love Joss’ work and it’s brought me a ton of enjoyment and a ton of friends. It made me a better person. But I’m not above learning, and neither is he. We can enjoy something and still be critical of it. People saying “Whedon never hurt anyone” need to take a look at the Romani people who are silenced and erased daily, like he erased the Maximoffs ancestry. They need to look at Chinese people whose culture he hijacked while casting white people in their roles in Firefly. They need to look at all the women who are unable to or don’t want to have children and who have now been told by one of the biggest movies in the world that this fact makes them a monster. Look at the genderqueer individuals whose identity he erased in his Runaways run by saying unequivocly that a canon genderqueer character was really a girl or the Jewish people who live with the memory of the holocaust only to have the children of holocaust survivors be portrayed as volunteers for a fictional neo-nazi group.

Look at all the lives this man touches on a daily basis. He has the power and the intelligence to be a real force for good, solid, representation. He has the chance for his stories to matter. If he’s a fan of these characters he shouldn’t be beyond criticism in the way he portrays them. Nobody is perfect. I’m not. The people criticizing Joss aren’t. Hollywood isn’t. But what makes a good ally and a good person is the ability to listen to the people you’ve offended. Hold your hands up, say “I’m sorry, and I’ll try and do better next time.” That’s all it takes. Actively try to do better by the people you’re representing. Acting as though Joss is a completely innocent party doesn’t help anyone, and defending a cis het white man over the queer, poc, female, genderqueer, marginalized individuals his stories ignore or actively harm is an act of violence against those communities.

All we want is for a grown man to acknowledge he’s wrong and try and do better. Remember, there’s a reason the monsters in stories can’t see themselves in mirrors. To destroy people, you deny them an accurate portrayal of themselves.

Representation matters. It can change the world.

Hello, I hope you this kind of rp help as well. I identify as female & connect to my female identifying characters much better. They are usually very well developed & I get great feedback about them. However I just can't seem to write male identifying characters believably, people always say they could tell the male characters were written by a female author when they read my stuff. I also don't connect to them much, they are usually token characters to move along the plot. How can I fix this?

Alright, so this is something that happens a lot in the world of roleplaying. A lot of us identify as female, and many of us feel uncomfortable writing males because we are afraid that they will be incorrect, or we feel wrong writing as a gender outside of our own. As someone who identifies as female for the most part, but prefers to write males, I think I can be somewhat insightful in this subject.One thing to keep in mind is this: there is no correct way to be male or female. Gender is a social construct, and many times people who do not fall under what society consider to be traditionally female, or traditionally male are thought of as less so for that. So if you have a male character who is a little more feminine in action and personality – this is okay! The same thing goes for females who are more masculine. I really can’t emphasize this enough, there’s no right way to play a male or female character in terms of personality. Saying so enforces gender norms, which can be toxic.On the top of gender norms though, they are important when thinking about a character. While there is no right or wrong way to play a female or male character, some people are greatly affected by societal norms as they grow up. A female character can be effected by internalized misogyny, female gender roles or female beauty standards on top of many other things. A male character can be effected by toxic masculinity and machismo, in many ways. There’s a lot of instances where your characters life and the way they grew up will be effected by these things, and it’s important that you ask yourself when writing any character if societal gender norms effected them. Is there something in your male characters history that would suggest he was brought up with strict gender roles, in which a man needs to be tough and strong? How does this make them feel if by any chance they fail to reach these standards? For some reading on toxic masculinity, see here and here (this one is interesting because it is partially told by a mother looking at her sons as they grow up). This is something you should take into account, because it is very prevalent today and effects a lot of males.Lastly, I would like to link you to some posts about writing males. While I can’t stress enough again that there is no right or wrong way to write a male character, it is still interesting to take these things into consideration, and can probably help you differentiate between all your characters. It might also help you create a personality you otherwise wouldn’t have considered, which could be interesting!
I hope this helps, and I hope this helps other people who are also afraid of writing male characters. Please step out of your comfort zones, and go out there and make some amazing characters regardless of gender!

Edit: Also to address your last point about ‘not feeling as attached’ to your male characters – consider the way you are writing them. Are you only writing them to advance the plot? Did you put real thought behind their creation and do you put real effort into playing them? I’m not saying this to call you a bad writer or anything, I’m just genuinely asking. When you write and play these male characters, try to play them with the same mindset you play your females. Join a roleplay as a male and only a male, have him be your main character. You need to force yourself to see that character as a real “person” rather than just a plot point, for you to really enjoy playing as them. Basically, just approach it the same way you would writing for a female and you should start to feel the same about them.

I can’t emphasize how much I want more roleplayers to start playing males, so please don’t be discouraged!

*whispers* Really debating whether I should come back. I loved being an RPH, but this community is harsh sometimes. But with a lil upkeep and some time, I might be able to do some good stuff before disappearing off again....  GAH! I feel so out of touch.  What is happening with everything? Due to unforeseen circumstances, Admin Mels and Admin Elle can no longer be part of this roleplay. Therefore, we have decided to put this roleplay in a definitive hiatus while we finish up our bios. We have put a lot of work into this rp, and we really want it to be the best as it possible can before we open it up. I have decided to set the deadline for October 1st, plenty of time for us to finish our work and for everyone to have spare time to roleplay.
