I finally designed them... Yes, they're aesthetically based on existing characters from other two series -- it's just their appearances that i'm using as reference (i did not watch either of those shows sorry)

Meet Yuna [ 佑成 ] and Makoto [ 洵 ] -- Rui's cousin and cousin-in-law respectively~

Yuna is 5 years older than Rui, so when her parents took care of him, she was all around him, trying to be supportive and help him. But Rui was suffering a huge trauma and isolated himself from the others, keeping only the most basic contact with her and her parents. They couldn't do anything without Rui's wishes, so they just offered her shelter, education and food.

At this point, Yuna was dating a friend and classmate named Kouda Makoto -- a few months older than her -- who had helped her deal with the frustration she felt, thanks to the belief that she was useless if she couldn't help her only cousin deal with all of "whatever happened to him".

Makoto and Yuna had this silly, sweet dream of opening a cafe, which came true in January 2012. Rui was ready to move out, so they decided to hire him to work at the cafe and help him get money to buy a small apartment for himself. Some of the things for Rui's apartment were Yuna's and Makoto's help (plus Yuna's parents, too).

Despite everything, Yuna's personality is very motherly and has a lot of responsibility in it. She's always worried about how naive or reckless Makoto and Rui are. She may sound cold or harsh, but she's not. She's more blunt and brutally honest, but never mean or sarcastic. She's quite friendly and outgoing, and always tries to keep the Coffee Shop in a good mood.

As for Makoto, he's actually the first person he's felt like a "father figure" to in a long time. Makoto is bubbly and gentle, but at the same time a walking mess. But he's calm and patient and tries to help Rui overcome every obstacle. Ah he's a bookworm and an airhead sometimes.

Ah and they're... a Power couple. Yeah.

Ok, so remember this post here? I never was very fond of those AU-like tropes because i don't know many of them so uhh... The Karatez collab making the 02 group as a cafe shop staff made me just too excited to the point i... yeah.

Yeah, i made a canon-verse headcanon for where Rui-kun works at. And there's this bittersweet backstory and i finally used the collab design as reference for a coffee shop uniform (^・ω・^ )

This is a rough sketch, and a few details settled already from my other accs. But it’s a good start?

So the place Rui works (and still works at) is a cafe shop owned by his cousin’s fianceé/husband. The shop’s name is ‘Infinity’ and its logo is a butterfly (the ‘i’ in it is the body of the butterfly) – don’t judge it badly since i’m more of an amateur character designer (and hobbyist) than a logotype & building designer. For the i’m using this asset from CSP asset store made by user 胡原 – https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1829252 (you will notice the original asset is a clothes store, but the design felt nicer for my tastes of a cafe shop so yeah, i’m using this one as base for the headcanon)

I’m so sorry i can’t design the interior/indoors for the shop and i didn’t see one single interior coffee shop free on CSP assets to work with, so for now there’s no details about it indoors. But hey, feel free to use your imagination while reading this post or any future stuff i bring this up in.

Now, the backstory for this headcanon (?!)

The thing is, after Rui lost his parents and was accepted by his relatives, said relatives gave him enough love and respected his boundaries and wishes to never touch him or ask about the eye. He would say “it’s fine, don’t worry” and give a (sad) smile. He had an almost normal life with them. His cousin is a few years older than him (she’s possibly around Jou’s age) and when Rui had graduated High School she was running a cafe shop with her fianceé (now husband) to both start their life together. Rui never had issues with his relatives, especially with this girl, so the moment she offered him a job so he could find his own way and then afford his own apartment, he accepted it. Reminder: He’s non-confrontational so this means he had no idea if he should refuse the offer or not.

At this point of the story, he’s just covering his right eye with bangs. The eyepatch is still visible under the bangs, and yes, people just start muttering things about his face. It made him a little nervous, but he never felt like confronting anyone about this, so he got the habit of telling people who would start looking at him nonstop when he was trying to note their orders “I  hurt my eye when I was young, don’t worry, I’m fine.” in order to not make anyone concerned with his health. Some people believed he was some sort of emo because of the bangs too, but he didn’t care much about it. As long no one knows he got like, a monster eye slapped into his face, EVERYTHING is fine.

Post-02TB events, and when Ukkomon hatches, Rui introduces his digimon to his cousin and her husband, who’s already aware of those critters going around Tokyo. They’re very chill about it, and then they just let Ukkomon work with Rui. But Rui also told him to never use that again and they then have a normal happy life together.

So, since he got official unnamed-or-nondesigned relatives… I just thought of that one Karatez collab and how they put Rui not as a waiter like Ken-Iori-Hikari and yes as a patissier like Dai-Miya-Take…

Just got this idea he does work at a cafe, at least one owned by his cousin's fiancée as part-time to get money for rent and his studies. He might not be fond of sweets, but he can bake stuff for others after all.

Btw the idea of Rui-kun being able to bake/cook sweets despite not being fond of them sounds ironic at first, but he really seems to be the kind of person who wants to please others even if he dislikes something. Not that he forces himself to eat anything sweet, but he puts some effort into making something the others like.

Currently he bakes sweets for Ukkomon and the digimon because digimon have a sweet tooth and he cannot resist those critters’ smiles…

That said... I felt in love with Rui since his adult design, name and VA was announced. Some of my old art/stuff featuring him was wild speculation until now.
