The 2023 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The 10th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 9th May 2023.
It’s short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.

The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
For the curious, you can also spy on some graphs and demographic data for the incoming responses here.
Thank you so much!

Monday 24th April 2023 - day 16
We're now past the halfway point, on day 16 with 15 days to go until the survey closes. We're also about to hit 32,000 responses. 🚀 At the moment, we only need 163 responses today (within the next 4 hours or so) to be on track to break the all-time record of around 44,000 responses by the time the survey closes.
According to the trendline, we're still on track for just under 40,000 responses:
There have been participants from 128 countries. 57 of them have 10 participants are more and so will have usable national data.
I've also made some improvements and added some graphs, so you can now see via which 6 websites/methods people found the survey over the past 48 hours, broken down by hour as a graph:
About 17% of participants are over the age of 30, so anything you can do to boost the survey URL out of the social media bubble and into new LGBTQ+ circles is really helpful! Here's the survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
Thank you very much for your support so far, everyone!
If you or know anyone interested in taking a survey about gender identity, please take this one! It’s very quick and simple! I already answered mine. Also, reblog and share through email and other social media sites, especially if you know any LGBTQ+ members who will be 31 or older this year as their voices also count more than ever.
