Alias - The Pretender comparison - XXI This is a comparison between 4 characters (Jarod|Vaughn & Lyle|Sark) inspired by the 'torture' moments. This time I'm going to work on more different episodes. I already mentioned how much Sark reminds me of Lyle. In this comparison between Lyle and Sark I said that they're both ambiguous and deceptive. Another thing I noticed is that Vaughn reminds me of Jarod sometimes. In this comparison between Sark|Lyle & Vaughn|Jarod I said that they both behave in the same way under some circumstances, especially when they're facing the person they hate the most. I think that Lyle is the only person that Jarod really hates. He killed his brother, he kidnapped Zoe, he tortured him and he almost killed him once. And he's definitely the worst brother ever to Miss Parker. Vaughn hates Sark because he's an assassin and he had an affair with his wife, Lauren. I always loved watching Vaughn and Sark fighting against one another in Alias. And the same goes for Jarod facing Lyle. This post is about the tortures occurred during Alias and tP. Let's start from the beginning. In 2.19 Lyle wants to use Jarod as a means to get back to the Centre. At that time it's Kyle who has to save his brother, suddenly appearing from nowhere. Then in 3.08 Jarod would like to kill Lyle because he's his brother's murderer, but he can't. He just scares him to death and doesn't pull the trigger. When Jarod is captured at the end of season 3, in 4.01 we see Lyle at his worst when he tries to destroy Jarod and tortures him in any possible way. And finally, in 4.14 Jarod takes his vengeance on Lyle when he threatens to torture him back if he doesn't cooperate to help Kim Chen. In Alias the story is very similar. At the end of season 2, Sark shoots at Vaughn (who has a bulletproof vest) and later Vaughn punches his enemy and reminds him that he doesn't pull the trigger when he uses his gun. In season 3 we see the most delicious scenes of torture between Lyle and Vaughn. First of all, Lyle kidnaps Vaughn (who already knows that Lauren is a double agent) and tortures him by using electroshock. Then he injects him with a powerful serum that almost kills him. In the last episode of the third season, Vaughn takes his vengeance on Sark and beats him up right on the spot to find out where Lauren is. And another great moment is at the end of the show, in the very last episode of season 5, when Vaughn finds Sark (who's going to use nuclear bombs to destroy a few cities in U.S. because he's following Irina and Sloane's orders). Even if Vaughn shoots Sark's leg, Sark is cunning as usual in cutting a deal. I love that scene. =) Anyway, the thing is that Vaughn reminds me of Jarod. They're both physically tortured, but they keep their feelings hidden until the time for vengeance comes. They both don't kill their enemy, just obtain what they need for their purposes. On the other hand, Lyle and Sark are so full of themselves that they're always ready to cut deals and obtain something in return. And that sounds like cowardice, to me. Sark is most famous for his 'Not a problem. My loyalties are flexible' quote. Well, maybe I prefer a bad guy who at least believes in what he does than a bad guy who betrays everyone and everything just for money. Both shows were so well written, anyway. These characters are among the best I've ever seen on tv. Great dialogues, great, scenes, great actors. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.01 - The World’s Changing Lyle: If you don’t want to go to the showers, I’ll bring the showers to you. Alias - 3.20 - "Blood Ties" Sark: There are three things you should understand. The first involves this item I hold in my hand. It's capable of delivering up to 500,000 volts. Not enough to kill you. Just enough to let you wish it would. Second, I believe Mr. Brill disclosed the location of The Passenger, which means I won't stop until you tell me. And third, Mr. Vaughn, is that I'm going to enjoy this more than I should. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.14 - The Agent of Year Zero Mr. Lyle: If I refuse? Jarod: That’s not really an option. When you used to torture me at the Centre, I had to apply a technique that I learned as a little boy. To help block out the physical pain, I had to go to places in my mind. You, on the other hand, have not perfected this particular survival technique. Have you? Alias - 3.22 - Resurrection Vaughn: You like the electric batons and the injections. I'm not into accessories. Sark: I'm more than willing to cooperate, Mr. Vaughn. I will tell you everything you want, but I will need something in return. Vaughn: No deals. Sark: Well, then, it seems we're at an impasse. Vaughn: I'm not gonna kill you. That would be too easy. But I'll leave you so disfigured that when you walk down the street, people will pity you. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.14 - The Agent of Year Zero Lyle: You know my philosophy, Jarod. Don’t ask, don’t tell. Alias - 5.17 - All the Time in the World Sark: You shot me! Vaughn: Yeah, and I'll keep shooting you until you either give me the codes or bleed to death. Your choice. Sark: You know, I didn't want any of this. Mass extermination isn't exactly my passion, Michael. I'm a businessman. You know, I simply wanted to come out on the winning end. I'll give you the codes, but you have to let me go after I do. Vaughn: Codes first, then we negotiate. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ And again, if you want to read some real good stuff about this, just go here. It's something made by iwouldlovetoeatyourtoast, which is a far better writer than I am.
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XIX Working on The Pretender - Episode 4.09 “‘Til Death Do Us Part” Alias - Deleted Scene from Season 3 ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ I've written about Sydney's own tragedy reminding me of Miss Parker's one many times before. Since Danny's death, Sydney hates Arvin Sloane. And she wants him to die for what he did. And this is so like Miss Parker, whose revenge is aimed towards Brigitte. When she finds out that she's the one who killed Thomas, she's so blind that she would kill her, even if she's going to have her little brother. There's this lovely scene in Alias Season 3 that was deleted (don't ask why, this is really unbelievable!). It shows Vaughn going to Sydney's house after Sloane's death by lethal injection. She doesn't know that Jack saved Arvin, yet. And even if she thinks that Sloane is dead, she doesn't feel satisfied at all. And this totally reminds me of Miss Parker, who admits with Jarod that even if she had killed Brigitte, now she knows that it wouldn't have brought her peace. I think these two conversation are very much alike, in a way. And once again, I see that Vaughn is there for Sydney just as much Jarod is there to help Miss Parker. As usual there's only one difference between these two otps of mine. While Syd and Vaughn always talk face to face, between Jarod and Parker there's always a phone... ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Sydney: Come in. Vaughn: Hi. Sydney: Hi. Vaughn: I was on my way home from work and I...just wanted to make sure you're okay. Sydney: I'm fine. I will be fine. Vaughn: Syd... Sydney: This was gonna be it. The end. Sloane's death it was gonna be a liberation, but here it is and...there's no satisfaction and...there's no relief. Vaughn: It won't always be like this. It'll get better. Sydney: I know. Vaughn: You have to go home... ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Parker: I thought that getting revenge for Tommy’s death would somehow bring me peace. But even if I had been able to, I know now it wouldn’t have. Jarod: That isn’t the unfinished business that needs finishing. You said the other day that you wish you had told him. Told him what? Parker: I never- I never told Tommy that I loved him. Jarod: And now your heart and your mind are raging a war against each other. Parker: I would trade everything for one minute with him. Just to say those words and have him hear them. Jarod: Tell him. Let your heart win the war.
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XVIII Working on The Pretender - Episode 4.06 “Extreme” Alias - Episodes 3.04 “A Missing Link” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ The fact that Zed wanted Shay/Carrie to be tested in this way really reminds me of what happens in Alias Ep. 3.04. Sydney pretends to be Julia Thorne and she's tested by Simon Walker, who asks her to steal a diamond necklace just to prove that she's good enough to work with him. He even calls the police, just like Zed does in tP.
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XVII Working on The Pretender - Episode 4.03 “Angel's Flight” Alias - Episodes 3.18 “Unveiled” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Well, this is just a matter of scenes, locations and make up. But Vaughn and Sydney's alias in this episode truly reminds me of Jarod's look for the whole Hawk affair. Don't you think?
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XV Working on The Pretender - Episode 3.21 “Donoterase: Part 1” Alias - Episodes 2.14 “Double Agent”, 2.22 “The Telling”, 3.06 “The Nemesis”, 4.21 “Search and Rescue”, 5.14 “I See Dead People” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Well, during my tPmarathon I'm realizing more and more that Alias didn't invent almost anything. Even cloning, something that in Alias looks amazing and unbelievable to people that never watched tP. In Alias the cloning Project is called "Helix"; in tP it's named "Gemini" (a much more suggestive title). But while Jarod's clone is his lovely childhood version, portrayed by Ryan Merriman, clones in Alias are EVIL. And they're all Sydney's Nemesis. The first is Agent Lennox (Ethan Hawke), the second is Syd's best friend Francie (with her almost historic phrase, "I just remembered. Francie doesn't like coffee ice-cream"). Later in the show Irina Derevko is also cloned (to make Jack Bristow believe he killed his wife) and...Sydney too! Anna Espinosa becomes Sydney Bristow and pretends to be her worst enemy with Vaughn. Needless to say, he realizes at once she's not the real Syd, and he tells her, "And just for the record, you're a terrible kisser!". As soon as Syd kills Anna, there's one of the sweetest scenes I've ever seen on tv...(but that's another story!) *_* Oh, I love these two shows... *_*
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XIII Bis Working on The Pretender - Episode 3.18 “Wake Up” Alias - Episode 1.04 “A Broken Heart” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Another thing my two favorite shows share is the soundtrack in one of the best moments for the otp. The song is "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, which is probably one of the most used songs for tv shows and movies soundtracks. In tP, we can hear the song both during Tommy's funeral (fading when Miss Parker is at the bar) and at the end, when she is at the cemetery. In Alias, the song is played in 'A Broken Heart' during my fave moment for the Syd-Vaughn otp. She's shattered because she doesn't understand who she is or what she's doing anymore, and Vaughn comes to comfort her like the beautiful guardian angel he is. Ok, there's some slight differences because: 1. Mp and Jarod's conversation isn't very lovely, far from it! She's drunk and, as usual, she scorns the pretender. Sydney and Vaughn, instead, have their first real conversation outside work and this is the moment she realizes that Vaughn really cares for her. (Ahw! *_* Man, I need to rewatch this episode!) 2. The song can be heard during the whole Syd-Vaughn conversation, while when Jarod and Mp start to talk, the song is just finished. Well, you know what? I don't care. Because these two moments are very similar, to my eyes. Two men trying to soothe and help the women they love (or at least care deeply about).
Alias - The Pretender comparison - XIII Working on The Pretender - Episode 3.18 “Wake Up” Alias - Episode 1.01 “Truth Be Told” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ As I already mentioned, to me Alias was the real heir of The Pretender, since the very first episode. I think I probably started to love Sydney Bristow so much because her tragedy, at least in season one, really reminded me of Miss Parker's. They both lose the man they love because of the agency they work for. Sydney reveals Danny that she is a C.I.A. agent (she doesn't know that SD-6 it's not real C.I.A., yet) and Sloane gives order to kill him. Parker tells her father she wants to leave with Thomas and he (probably) gives order to kill him. The lovely thing is that these strong and brave women need someone to take care of them during this terrible period. And they both have their *guardian angel*. While Miss Parker has her usual annoying pretender trying to make her keep her wits about her, Sydney meets Vaughn for the first time and something clicks at once.
Alias - The Pretender comparison - IX Working on The Pretender - Episode 3.09 “Murder 101” Alias - Episode 3.16 “Taken” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Another line that I heard both in tP and Alias. - tP: Jarod is pretending to teach psychology of the criminal mind to find the killer of former professor Clark. Claire is a real 'femme fatale' and she likes playing with Jarod. Jarod: Well, that’s all for today. See you the next time. Claire: Not if I see you first. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ - Alias: The audience already knows that Lauren (Vaughn's wife) is evil. Jack and vaughn don't know yet, but a couple of days before Jack intercepted a conversation between Sark and his secret contact, with him saying goodbye with a weird 'Not if I see you first, love.' So, when Vaughn asks his wife if they're going to see each other later, Lauren's answer totally betrays her to Jack! Michael Vaughn: See you later? Lauren Reed: Not if I see you first, love. Both scenes were just amazing!
Alias - The Pretender comparison - VII Working on The Pretender - Episode 2.12 “Toy Surprise” Alias - Episode 2.09 “Passage Part 2” I already mentioned that Toy Suprise reminds me of a specific Alias episode (called 'The Box' and split into 2 parts). Today I was thinking that the ending actually reminds me of another Alias episode. At the end of 'Passage Part 2' Sydney goes to the minigolf with Francie and Will, right after Vaughn gives her the tickets he bought as a present for her. They can't afford being seen together, so Vaughn watches over her at a safe distance, smiling in content when he realizes Sydney is happy to have a good time with her best friends. In 'Toy Surprise' something very similar happens when Jarod calls Parker and asks to read the card he left for her. Of course, it's a very different situation. They're at the cemetery and she's mourning on her mother's death. But the main idea is the same: he looks at her at a safe distance even if she doesn't know he's there. And his gift truly makes her happy.
