Alias - The Pretender comparison - XXI This is a comparison between 4 characters (Jarod|Vaughn & Lyle|Sark) inspired by the 'torture' moments. This time I'm going to work on more different episodes. I already mentioned how much Sark reminds me of Lyle. In this comparison between Lyle and Sark I said that they're both ambiguous and deceptive. Another thing I noticed is that Vaughn reminds me of Jarod sometimes. In this comparison between Sark|Lyle & Vaughn|Jarod I said that they both behave in the same way under some circumstances, especially when they're facing the person they hate the most. I think that Lyle is the only person that Jarod really hates. He killed his brother, he kidnapped Zoe, he tortured him and he almost killed him once. And he's definitely the worst brother ever to Miss Parker. Vaughn hates Sark because he's an assassin and he had an affair with his wife, Lauren. I always loved watching Vaughn and Sark fighting against one another in Alias. And the same goes for Jarod facing Lyle. This post is about the tortures occurred during Alias and tP. Let's start from the beginning. In 2.19 Lyle wants to use Jarod as a means to get back to the Centre. At that time it's Kyle who has to save his brother, suddenly appearing from nowhere. Then in 3.08 Jarod would like to kill Lyle because he's his brother's murderer, but he can't. He just scares him to death and doesn't pull the trigger. When Jarod is captured at the end of season 3, in 4.01 we see Lyle at his worst when he tries to destroy Jarod and tortures him in any possible way. And finally, in 4.14 Jarod takes his vengeance on Lyle when he threatens to torture him back if he doesn't cooperate to help Kim Chen. In Alias the story is very similar. At the end of season 2, Sark shoots at Vaughn (who has a bulletproof vest) and later Vaughn punches his enemy and reminds him that he doesn't pull the trigger when he uses his gun. In season 3 we see the most delicious scenes of torture between Lyle and Vaughn. First of all, Lyle kidnaps Vaughn (who already knows that Lauren is a double agent) and tortures him by using electroshock. Then he injects him with a powerful serum that almost kills him. In the last episode of the third season, Vaughn takes his vengeance on Sark and beats him up right on the spot to find out where Lauren is. And another great moment is at the end of the show, in the very last episode of season 5, when Vaughn finds Sark (who's going to use nuclear bombs to destroy a few cities in U.S. because he's following Irina and Sloane's orders). Even if Vaughn shoots Sark's leg, Sark is cunning as usual in cutting a deal. I love that scene. =) Anyway, the thing is that Vaughn reminds me of Jarod. They're both physically tortured, but they keep their feelings hidden until the time for vengeance comes. They both don't kill their enemy, just obtain what they need for their purposes. On the other hand, Lyle and Sark are so full of themselves that they're always ready to cut deals and obtain something in return. And that sounds like cowardice, to me. Sark is most famous for his 'Not a problem. My loyalties are flexible' quote. Well, maybe I prefer a bad guy who at least believes in what he does than a bad guy who betrays everyone and everything just for money. Both shows were so well written, anyway. These characters are among the best I've ever seen on tv. Great dialogues, great, scenes, great actors. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.01 - The World’s Changing Lyle: If you don’t want to go to the showers, I’ll bring the showers to you. Alias - 3.20 - "Blood Ties" Sark: There are three things you should understand. The first involves this item I hold in my hand. It's capable of delivering up to 500,000 volts. Not enough to kill you. Just enough to let you wish it would. Second, I believe Mr. Brill disclosed the location of The Passenger, which means I won't stop until you tell me. And third, Mr. Vaughn, is that I'm going to enjoy this more than I should. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.14 - The Agent of Year Zero Mr. Lyle: If I refuse? Jarod: That’s not really an option. When you used to torture me at the Centre, I had to apply a technique that I learned as a little boy. To help block out the physical pain, I had to go to places in my mind. You, on the other hand, have not perfected this particular survival technique. Have you? Alias - 3.22 - Resurrection Vaughn: You like the electric batons and the injections. I'm not into accessories. Sark: I'm more than willing to cooperate, Mr. Vaughn. I will tell you everything you want, but I will need something in return. Vaughn: No deals. Sark: Well, then, it seems we're at an impasse. Vaughn: I'm not gonna kill you. That would be too easy. But I'll leave you so disfigured that when you walk down the street, people will pity you. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ tP - 4.14 - The Agent of Year Zero Lyle: You know my philosophy, Jarod. Don’t ask, don’t tell. Alias - 5.17 - All the Time in the World Sark: You shot me! Vaughn: Yeah, and I'll keep shooting you until you either give me the codes or bleed to death. Your choice. Sark: You know, I didn't want any of this. Mass extermination isn't exactly my passion, Michael. I'm a businessman. You know, I simply wanted to come out on the winning end. I'll give you the codes, but you have to let me go after I do. Vaughn: Codes first, then we negotiate. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ And again, if you want to read some real good stuff about this, just go here. Alias - The Pretender comparison - XVI Working on The Pretender - Episode 4.01 “The World's Changing” Alias - Episodes 3.01 “The Two” ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ So, should we talk about how much Arvin Sloane can be compared to Mr. Raines? Of course, Sloane is far a better constructed character, he's so intense and ambiguous, he gets through a lot of metamorphosis. From bad to good, good to almost bad, almost bad to good, good to bad again. But what happens in Alias 3.01, when Sloane appears as a 'new man', really reminds me of what happens in tP 4.01, when Raines pretends to have changed. Sloane asks Sydney Bristow if she believes in redemption, Raines asks Parker if she believes in miracles. This two conversations look soooooo similar to one another. I loved them both, anyway! ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Raines: Do you believe in miracles, Miss Parker? Parker: I believe in revenge. Sloane: Sydney, do you believe in redemption? Sydney: Not for you, no. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Parker: This kindness crap may slay ‘em at the parish potluck, but it ain’t cuttin’ it with me. Raines: Then I’ll turn the other cheek. Miss Parker, those miracles I mentioned-they begin with...love. Sloane: The message was just one word, one simple word: Peace. The epiphany I had at that moment...suddenly I saw all the mistakes I'd made, the pain I had inflicted on the world, the people I loved. So I chose right then and there to give information to the CIA with which they were able to dismantle at least two dozen terrorist cells. Sydney: I don't know how you convinced the CIA that you're trustworthy... Sloane: Why don't you check my files? Sydney: I know you too well. I don't buy any of it. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ If you want to read more about it, just look here. This is the blog of one of the best fans of both these shows. We always agree about these comparison ;)

It doesn’t seem to matter how much it changes. It’s still the same for us. We’re still alone in it. [4.01 - The World’s Changing]
Parker: What? Jarod: At least we put one family back together. Parker: While mine got ripped apart again. Jarod: I know the feeling. Parker: You know, Jarod, maybe Lyle’s right. Maybe the world is changing. Jarod: It doesn’t seem to matter how much it changes. It’s still the same for us. We’re still alone in it. [4.01 - The World’s Changing]
Lyle: Parker. Parker: Our work’s done here. Lyle: What, he got away? How? Parker: You shouldn’t underestimate Jarod. Mm-mmm. And you should never underestimate me. And the next time that you send me into a building that’s gonna explode...it had better blow...because if it doesn’t, it’s gonna be your gray matter they’ll be mopping up with a toothbrush. By the way, Jarod left you something. [4.01 - The World’s Changing] Best monologue EVER!
Parker: You botch a Level “A,” and you’ll need my prayers, not my help. Lyle: I need my sister. I’ve always been a survivor, Parker but in the past year since I found my father and you I- I’ve realized it’s not just me against the world. Parker: I hear the world’s changing. Lyle: One look into Dad’s eyes confirms it. Despite that, the Centre’s always been about Parkers. And like it or not, you and I are it. Let’s fight for it, for us- for him. [4.01 - The World’s Changing] Lyle needing is sister is the most comical thing *ever*.
Lyle: Thank God you’re safe. You had me worried. Parker: About what? That suicidal sis might play a little game of razor roulette? Lyle: The suicide watch was for your own protection. Parker: Oh. Lyle: Not perfect, but it was all I could think of. The more the others thought you were a non factor, the safer you’d be. Parker: Others? Lyle: The same ones that got to Raines...that put the scare into our father. Parker: Which conveniently put you in charge. Lyle: Mutumbo snaps, I jump. Guilty. Parker: You and your team- I know all about your covert division. Mr. White. Silence. Lyle: Good, because I need your help. Look, I’m being straight here. Silence is a Level “A” contract. The last thing I needed was for Jarod to escape and make this his cause. Parker: Careful. You’re sweating. Lyle: Well, with Jarod hovering, I’d be stupid not to. [4.01 - The World’s Changing] I love their conversations, they're both sharp and irreverent!
