Lion Books, 1953. One of my favorite novels of all time. The cover of this edition is ludicrously out of sync with the story, which is a dark satire of university life.
Ballantine, 1961.
Ballantine, 1962. I found this at the Book Barn in Niantic, Conn.
Daw Books, 1977. From Baskets Books again. Daw published this series annually between 1971 and 1994. This volume has stories by Fritz Leiber, Manly Wade Wellman, Joseph Payne Brennan, Charles L. Grant, Tanith Lee, and others.
Lion Library, 1955. A gift from Old Ben Stockton. Stories by Ray Bradbury, Fritz Leiber, and Manly Wade Wellman, among others.
Marvel, 1973. Not strictly a book, but a digest-sized magazine collecting old and new horror fiction, including the Fritz Leiber classic featured on the cover.
"Our Lady of Darkness" gets my vote as best horror novella ever, for which the competition is stiffer than you might think. A great San Francisco story, but also a great story about cities generally. This edition pairs it with the earlier, also terrific, "Conjure Wife," which is still a fairly dead-on satire of university towns.
