A sad day for the warbird community, RIP to the pilots and crew involved in this tragic crash.
Lancasters, taken by John Dibbs.
Let the B-17 Flying Fortress love-fest begin. Other bombers may have been able to carry more payload, but the B-17 was the face of the daylight bombing campaign in Europe. What a lady.
A great combination of World War 2 bombers.
The pride of Boeing, the venerable B-17 and the B-52.
And yet, they brought it home. I hate to think of the fate of the tail-gunner, though.
Let’s continue to keep these precious historical symbols flying today. Let them inspire a new generation to appreciate all the things we enjoy in our daily lives. Let’s focus on building bridges instead of drifting apart further.
Sometimes I moan and groan about heading to work. I work in nice enough office, with a comfortable chair, and it has a great air conditioner. I should take more time to reflect on these brave men who when they went to the “office” there were no guarantees they would be home. Many were killed and maimed during their battles, and many were lost over the sea or taken as prisoners. So next time we feel like complaining about heading to work on a Monday, think of this young man on the way to his bomber, ready to fly and fight, with a very real possibility he would not return.
