If anyone's looking for a good movie to watch, here's the trailer for Stalker from 1979. Based off the 1972 novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, and directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, it's a Soviet sci-fi movie about a character known only as "The Stalker", who ferries people to a restricted area known as the "Exclusion Zone", where there is a room that supposedly grants people their deepest desires. It was also the inspiration for the video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Last Saturday, I saw Godzilla Minus One in the theater, and not only did it rock HARD, but it also revived my interest in the Godzilla franchise and gave me a Godzilla fic idea. Probably the most interesting thing about the movie was that it seemed to have a theme of redemption not only for the main character, but also for post-war Japan. Granted, I'm not sure if that's what the filmmakers were going for, but that's how I saw it.

I was half-expecting the second part to say "baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me no more." Still, Alphaville is my favorite Jean-Luc Godard movie of all time, not just because I like the plot and the characters, but also because stylistically, the movie feels like it invented some of the tropes I see in my favorite 70s/80s action movies. I'm not usually a fan of remakes, but I feel like a remake that deals with more contemporary themes, such as the polarization of politics and the rise of generative AI, could be a big hit if done right.

Hey, if anyone's looking for a good Japanese action movie to watch, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the 1975 movie The Bullet Train, starring Ken Takakura and Sonny Chiba. Basically, it's about a terrorist group who's planted a bomb onboard a bullet train, and the bomb will go off if the train goes under 80 km/h (50 MPH). So yeah...it was Speed before there was Speed.

Usually, whenever I have "movie night", I tend to watch 70s-80s action/exploitation/grindhouse movies. However, this month, I've been doing something a little different, what I call "Jeanuary". Basically, I've been watching the movies of the late Jean-Luc Godard, and the most recent one I watched was Alphaville, starring Eddie Constantine as secret agent Lemmy Caution. I thought it was a very good movie because not only did it have elements of film noir, but it even used a couple of tropes from the 70s-80s movies I like so much. I would DEFINITELY watch again!

So, I just had a thought: I think it would be cool if there was a My Hero Academia movie that was a completely original story that was disconnected from the storyline of the manga. I mean, I know the current crop of MHA movies are technically original stories, but those have definitive places in the storyline of the series, for example, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes being sandwiched between Seasons 2 and 3. I'm talking something more akin to Golgo 13: The Professional. Hell, while we're at it, this movie should have elements of 70s and 80s action movies.

So tonight, I watched the movie Joker, and having seen it, it made me more grateful for who I am and what I have. I’m not trying to put anybody down for any reason; I’m merely saying that after seeing what Joaquin Phoenix’s character went through, I took a brief assessment of where I’d been in life, where I am now, and where I could be going, and overall, I’d say I’ve been doing all right.

On a somewhat-related note, I’d like to share something that I’ve been doing ever since 2014: I’ve been keeping what I call a “gratefulness diary”. Here’s how I do it: every night, before I go to bed, I write down a list of good things that happened to me that day. They can be things such as: getting enough food to eat, getting through the day without being the victim of a crime, getting to talk to my loved ones, being hugged by someone I like (there’s NOTHING more cool), or even just still being alive. Even if it sometimes feels like an arbitrary thing to do, it’s really helped me to take stock of life.
