The coorganizers of the Musée d'Orsay exhibition are accused of overreaching in their pursuit of a fresh take on Gustave Caillebotte. Several prominent French art critics have lambasted the Musée d'Orsay's blockbuster exhibition on the Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, titled "Painting Men." The show (on view until January 19, 2025) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see a large body of the artist's oeuvre, thanks to exceptional loans. Despite praise, some critics from across the political spectrum argue that the exhibit places too much emphasis on a gendered interpretation of Caillebotte's work, suggesting he was gay. Christian Schoeler (1976-2015)…In 2013, at the height of his creativity, Schoeler lost his ability to paint, due to a serious illness from which he never fully recovered. Two and a half years later, this sensitive and most extraordinary of artists decided against a life without painting; he died in December 2015 at the age of 39. A German contemporary painter known for his watercolors and oil paintings, who lived and worked in Düsseldorf, the artist himself regarded his work as a mirror between him and his models. The world of his images, haunting and fragile, attests to both profound conflict and a pleasure in experimentation with his technique.
