Kevin manages to use enough of his spirit to get Jody on the phone, his brief time spent with her being enough to tell him that his mom could really use a new friend, one “in the life.” Jody scoffs at that terminology, but she understands.
Linda hesitantly, politely talks to her on the phone, then this turnsinto longer calls, e-mails, finally, meeting in person.
Linda and Jody teach each other a few things, but most importantly, they talk, and they understand. And no one else in their lives can really understand. Dean and Sam, yeah, but they’re always doing their own thing, and Jody and Linda both know it’s good to not get too close to that.
Eventually, Jody confides in Linda about her own son, how she’d had to put him down, and how she doesn’t know whether she envies Linda, or aches for her.
Linda says she knows she will someday have to do the same thing, but she’ll do it, for Kevin, for herself, for all the good in the world that they fight for, died for.
Jody and Linda hug, and Kevin materializes for a moment, to watch them, to smile. He knows now that when he has to go, his mother will be safe. And loved.
