so apparently these closet breakouts are a result of writers exploiting office chaos to their own advantage

But in the case of both Tim Drake and Jonathan Kent, Robin and Superman, the storylines were solely, for want of a better phrase, “bottom-up”. The creators involved Meghan Fitzmartin writing Tim Drake stories in the anthology Batman: Urban Legends and Tom Taylor on Superman: Son Of Kal-El. They independently thought it would be an interesting take on the characters, might make a twist that could inform new stories, and might reflect the desires and wishes of new audiences without turning off the old. They each had their stories approved by their direct editors at DC Comics, but higher-up editorial only found out about what was going on when the comics were well underway. And in Batman: Urban Legends #6’s case, already sent out from the printers. In both cases, this necessitated some urgent editorial meetings to a) check what was going on and b) suggest that maybe people might mention it a little further advance next time.
If it had all been planned, as part of some conspiracy, there would not have been a four-month gap between Batman Urban Legends #6 and #10, for the next part of Tim Drake’s story. And there wouldn’t have been such frantic Zoom meetings arranged at the Batman and Superman DC Comics editorial offices after the fact, with everybody kicking off. DC Comics has become a lot warier of scaring the horses after the Batman Damned Batpenis event of three years ago, and the not-entirely-pandemic-related redundancies last year… there’s far too many spinning of plates, firefighting, dealing with not enough paper, printers, or trucks, with delays stacking up, to ever consider some pushing some kind of woke liberal social agenda as a corporate policy. If only. There just isn’t the time.

Like ngl I’m mostly annoyed by the Jon Kent thing and most reactions to it? Like as a bi guy my reaction is the same thing as with Tim....I don’t personally have to be a huge fan of the characters in question to be glad for more mlm representation in comics. The fact that I might have preferred other characters to be made gay or bi instead doesn’t change that.

And as a bi guy who’s used to being expected to be grateful for anything done with LGBTQ+ characters from Marvel and DC like their choices aren’t all about their bottom line more than genuine interest in being progressive, I’m annoyed at the deliberateness of choosing Jon AND Tim to make mlm when DC knows damn well people have been viewing Kon as bi for decades and that swerve there is all kinds of shifty on their part IMO.

And as a DC fan who is frequently as annoyed by fandom hypocrisy when fans try and play the evil DC card while pulling much of the exact same bullshit they decry it for themselves, like the more it gets made about jokes about TimKon shippers being mad or the more it’s about people actually being mad because it prevents shipping TimKon, instead of even just being specifically upset at the sketchy reasoning in evidence for the choice, the more annoyed I get because hey do people actually give a fuck about representation like they claim or is it literally all just about shipping and having ‘your’ ship be canon.

And as a dude who can’t stand Taylor, the clear spiritual successor to Bendis and more like him everyday, I’m just annoyed it was him and people will praise him for being progressive when his response to every criticism ever made of him shows how little he actually gives a shit about the readers represented by the various characters he tries to cast himself as progressive in his writing of, and he’s just here for the praise and the progressive rep points.

As usual, I contain multitudes and three fourths of them are currently cranky. LOL. Oh well. At least I’ve still got that first 25%.

For the record Tom Taylor making Jon Bi does not except him from criticism and any arguments that say that are nonsensical in the least-It does not except him from Ableism, Racism, Misogyny, or Homophobia from previous and current writings. Please keep that in mind when reading his work. Be ready to hear criticisms of it w/o going out of your way to defend a bigot-be ready to criticize it yourself.

Able-bodied and neurotypical DC fans, do better. I have seen a thousand posts by now that begin and end “don’t support nightwing, don’t support superman son of kal-el, don’t -” and then do absolutely nothing else. How else are you an ally? What are you really doing to help us? How about take a break from the performative callouts and go actually do something that supports paraplegic people and wheelchair users:
