I have a criticism and before everything, I have to made clear that I don't hate this shipp, I just don't like it bu that doesn't mean that I don't want to see more development and aknowledge more things.

Nika betrayed Damian, she gave his heart to LDM and then this last one tried to kill him or something like that, but she never received any type of consequence because of that, people didn't doubt about her, Damian didn't doubt about her and that's the point I'm annoyed.

Damian is probably one of the batboys who has more trust issues, I could understand him being excited for a relationship or trying to make friends, but not even really mentioning about Flatline actions or even doubting about her is completely oc.

Not only that, even a normal person would be weird about and nlt really that trustful to that person.

My problem is that they could create more drama, tension and doubt about her and have a good characterization of Damian but they decide that everyone would trusted her just because she changes her mind about betraying him.

Is there any changes on Damian's feelings due to her actions? Does he feel hurt? Can Nika gain their trust again?

Every character that had hurt Damian in tbe past made his way to gain Damian's trust again and some of them didn't even have the completely trust, but he trusted a girl that actually betrayed him from nothing?

They could made an introspectation about his feelings about romance, they could make an instrospectation Nika's character but everything seems to be solved so easily.

And that's bland writting. Sure, the beach episode was cute, but the drama was really fake and cringy and that's a problem with the whole run.

Maybe it was the limitation and cancellation of the run but they could explored so much.

Like, when they were in Japan, they could have more adventures and even having another plot with some new more interesting villians, but they literally just went to find Nika and came back with some lacky dialogue.

The second arc was a set up for Shadow war and BvR and I can't avoid feeling dissapointed of it.

I liked the first arc, sure it has wrongs but at least we had more things, we had Ra's and Damian's interactions, we had Rose, Goliath and the rest of the siblings in one issue. We had a more positive spotlight with Talia (not perfect but at least a more positive set up to her) and good ideas.

The second arc was just dissapointed and that hurts me a lot to say because I was really excited.

as most of my posts are centered around the batgirls heres my review of issue 8 and why i most likely wont be posting about the batgirls run anymore

I'm close to just being done with this series. This issue focuses mainly on dick and babs (babs as batgirl as well) instead of steph and cass, its their book yet they've been pushed to the back. I've had so many issues with this book before today but I ignored it in favor of getting any stephcass content (lets be fair almost all of their modern content is terrible :/). Last months "joke" about cass considering they leave seer to die was my breaking point. Besides that I've always been annoyed with how the writers say they're going to show babs with disability aids and yet suddenly stopped doing that , even worse she's suited up as batgirl in almost every issue. I'm just so tired, why is it that the only good batgirls content I get is from webtoon?

i wrote this on league of comic geeks so its pretty condensed. the other issues i was referencing were the de-aging of all 3 of them, which lead to mischaracterization and really weird and bad dialogue. when it comes to dickbabs (one of my favorite ships mind u) theres been a continued issue of focusing all of babs character on dick, her being sexualized while also .. infantilizing her, infantilizing doesnt seem quite right but its the only word i can think of. its so uncomfortable read along with just being bad writing .

I agree and sort of disagree at the same time (let me try to explain how I feel as best as I can because I’m so tired rn so please bare in mind lol) because there are some comics for example, that have Bruce hurt one of his kids in 1 comic, but in the next following comics Bruce’s actions have consequences and you see the kid having to deal with what Bruce did to them. So in the end Bruce may have hurt at least one of his kid’s in one comic, but you get to see the results of his shittyness carried over in multiple comics. So technically there are a lot more comics that have Bruce be an asshole when he shouldn’t be written like this, period. But it’s a part of his character now. This is what we have to deal with sadly.

And when Bruce hurts his kids, you see the kid deal with the effects in THEIR comic. His abuse spreads over in not just Bruce’s own solos, but in so many.

You’re still right that we can read more comics to avoid Bruce’s assholeness, but there’s also a lot of Bruce’s shittyness that are in other comics cuz he appears in other comics as well. (He’s everywhere omg)

But don’t get me wrong, I like Bruce when he acts the way he should, and I try avoid comics with his shitty characterization but end up seeing asshole Bruce anyway, since he’s DC’s most popular character.

I think people on tiktok are lowkey right, I think it’s a 50/50 kind of situation. 🤷‍♀️

I need people to understand that when bruce says Jason is his biggest failure he does not mean that Jason is a bad person and that Jason is a failure, he means that not saving Jason was his biggest failure, he means he failed Jason and he will spend the rest of his life regretting that

Avatar

I know this, but sometimes even certain writers don’t. Which is why I’m kind of against DC using this phrase since it keeps getting misinterpreted by writers and readers, and because it shits on Jason’s character. It a badly overused quote.

okay so obviously i know jason being batman's son isn't conditioned on him being robin and all that, but i mean the editorial decision to have post-crisis jason call bruce "mr wayne" until he finishes a mission as robin and bruce tells him he did well is... 💀

Avatar
batfamcraze

Lol I never noticed this detail, this means that Jason called him “Mr. Wayne” for more than a year 💀

Jason was trained for a year until he was good enough to be out in the field, I think this panel takes place after Jason’s first mission as Robin and Bruce finally tells him it’s ok that he could use his first name...

Does this mean that Bruce wanted to see if he could be a good Robin first to be able to call him by his first name and keep him around, or the writer didn’t realize what they wrote? Am I reading too much into it? Maybe. It’s not a good look for Bruce either way lol

During this period, Bruce has some questionable(?) morals and I wouldn’t be surprised if my theory is possible honestly 🤷‍♀️

So I was reading Stephanie’s Batgirl run, and I came across these panels:

These panels, have so much hypocrisy it’s ridiculous. When Dick and Barbara met for the very first time in the comics, Barbara was an adult near Bruce’s age and Dick was a child. Give and take a few years, you can see that Dick and Barbara’s age dynamic is similar if not worse than Stephanie and Damian’s here.

So when Dick says “Don’t compare Stephanie and Damian to our time as Batgirl and Robin, because that’s gross.”

That is LITERALLY what happened to them.

Barbara was a grown woman and Dick was way too young for them to be together. They aged down Barbara so much, they became a couple. It was never supposed to happen.

It baffles me so much that this was written, I hate DickBabs so much and they shouldn’t be written as a couple anymore, because it’s so disgusting.

I honestly wish Dick and Barbara had more love interests and had more relationships in general, because for Barbara to date Dick is still wrong and annoying, I hate that DC has gotten away with it for way too long.

I honestly hate it whenever the writers would write a flashback scene and it would be RobinDick and BatgirlBabs fighting crime together while simultaneously flirting. Its annoying because DC loves to talk about how much they respect the history of the comics, then turn around and write how much Dick and Barbara were obsessed with each other back then, when it was never the case. They frame their friendship back then as romantic, when it never was. To completely retcon the way they felt about each other, to dismiss their other real relationships, have to tell the audience how much they loved each other, is not how you write a proper relationship in any fictional media. It’s not convincing at all to readers.

Their relationship was never supposed to look like this. All I see whenever they write those flashback scenes, is Barbara being written as a predat*r because she’s flirting with someone who she has no business flirting with. Can the writers give her a love interest that’s actually her age without having to age her down constantly? Is that too much to ask? There are so many jokes of “Which Batboy will she date with her next age-down?”, Do I have to explain that what happened to Dick and Barbara, happened again with Jason and Barbara? Like C’mon.

You know that panel of Vicki Vale asking if she can see Tim and Alfred’s like “Master Tim is far too young for you”. Yup, thats me with Dick and Barbara every time. I don’t care that right now Barbara is technically younger than Dick, she keeps having her age changed and I don’t care. I will always see her much older than Dick.

If we were to look at Dick and Barbara’s relationship in a different way, let’s take the example of Stephanie and Damian together, because of the panels above.

  • Right now, Stephanie is still 18 years old, and Damian is 14. Just imagine further down the road, Stephanie remains the same age, and Damian keeps aging (Technically this is still happening since they aged Damian to 14 now and Steph stayed as 18, scary thought).
  • What if even further down the line, the writers make Stephanie and Damian start a relationship, and then use their time as Batgirl and Robin to show that they liked each other ever since then?
  • There might be weird shippers who would enjoy their relationship, but then there would be fans (like myself) who would be outraged because their time as Batgirl and Robin was very obviously stated that they viewed the other as a siblings and nothing more. They were also eight years apart at the time (Comic panels above: Damian was 10, Stephanie was 18)
  • Let’s say DC tries to push Steph and Damian together so much, that they do countless retcons, and then they write multiple flashback scenes of them flirting when they were young and “in love.” That would be gross, wouldn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Dick and Barbara, its gross, and it never should have happened.

TBH I wish they both had more and new love interests/relationships because DickBabs is so annoying and they shoudn’t be written together anymore (For reference Dick and Barbara in Nightwing Rebirth, and every Nightwing solo ever).

Their romantic relationship, has ruined Dick and Barbara’s characterizations for the worse to this day, and shipper’s are to blame.

Oof this is exactly how I feel about DickBabs 👏🏼 I’m so over them lol

Even if you ignore the age changes, everything listed above are perfect reasons why their relationship sucks and should be dropped completely. They’ve never had good writing with their relationship and it costed them their characterizations in the long run

Unpopular Opinion #2

I hate the Jason’s autopsy scar headcanon, it doesn’t make sense and I just don’t like it lol

If he died, came back by Lazarus Pit/Or came back and got healed by the Lazarus Pit, he wouldn’t have scars/injuries anymore since he got healed.

I hope they don’t implement this in canon, DC has a track record of including fanon in the comics.

Yeah, it’s kinda stupid. But also neck scar would have a lot more sense (if you want angst it will get a shit LOAD of angst).

But I also think Lazarus Pit healing scars is incredibly stupid thing since scars is already healed thing  (how the fuck you’re supposed to heal what’s already healed?) but it’s about canon not fanon

I think that the lazarus pit just restores your body in general, not only heals it.

After all Ra's used it mostly to get young again, but old age is not an illness or a wound. And while sure you can heal the problem that old age cause you, he physically got younger too: no wrinkles and no white hair

@malaarte true true you bring a good point

Oooh yea neck scar is very angsty

Hmm that part about the Lazarus pit is interesting, and you’re right scars are technically healed wounds but I still don’t like the autopsy scar headcanon anyway lol so it’s pretty much up to people’s tastes at this point!

This is what I was thinking. The pit fixed all his scars, his head and everything. Thats what it does. Why would he have it?

Exactly! Idk where that headcanon came from but it’s annoying every time I see it 😭

When I see a fanfic mentioning his autopsy scar I immediately roll my eyes lol I can’t help it

Dick is DC’s certified pretty boy™, but when some writers have him be liked by everyone it feels a little too much sometimes. Not everybody is into “conventionally” attractive people, so they should keep this in mind.

Side note: Most of the time they’ll write it very cringey and make him be harassed to “show” that he’s pretty (This is a very big DC/Comic problem that needs to be addressed, so many characters get harassed and it’s normalized).

I’m gonna start posting a series of unpopular Batfamily opinions, I have an itch I wanna scratch and finally get them off my chest lol.

Of course I’ll be as respectful as possible and these would be MY opinions, so if you disagree don’t be rude about it and we can have a friendly conversation if you do! I personally love having debates and I wanna know if others feel the same way I do.

Yeah maybe Jason did plan to take Batman down for good, but he also saved like fifty innocent drugged Asian children from a horrible fate, because he knew it was wrong. I’m not saying he has a right to kill, but I can’t say either he has no morals or went psychopathic.

when i see people write jason as hating sheila i dont know why but i feel.... weird? i know in canon he forgave her but more than that it just doesnt feel like jason. idk how to explain this.

You’re right. His forgiveness of Sheila made Deadman pause because he couldn’t understand how this boy could be so forgiving to the woman that had watched Joker beat him nearly to death. It’s important that Jason never truly hates Sheila (or Willis, or Catherine, or Bruce). I don’t think he’s capable of truly hating a parent, honestly.

There are multiple instances of Jason saying Bruce is his father/like a father to him/calling Bruce “dad”(or himself “son”)whether in mocking or not while there are multiple instances of Bruce sayin Jason isn’t his kid/Bruce isn’t his father/Jay’s not family, yet Jason is the one stuck with the whole “you’re not my real dad >:((((“ angst

I’m just so tired of all the daddy issues jokes(because that’s what easier to squeeze Jason back into the bat dynamic) instead of ever actually acknowledging that Jason’s the one that still holds those titles in his heart while Bruce is the one who went on the (real) years long rant that he only has one kid(Damian) as he’s the only one that’s his flesh and blood. Can we point the finger at who actually doesn’t consider who family instead of bagging Jason down with “teen angst” he doesn’t even have?? Literally is brushing Jason’s issues of as him being a whining kid rather than the only person actually trying to communicate their feelings in this relationship

I mean, seriously, is it really that funny that Jason thinks Bruce hates him and made a mistake taking him in??? Am I missing something? Am I too stupid, sensitive and/or drowning in favoritism to understand why that’s hilarious, that Jason believes Bruce never cared about him in the first place and feels only seen as a weapon and martyr to be used by everyone else?

Avatar
robbed-ghost

You’re right and a lot of fanon doesn’t address it at all, because it’s emotionally harrowing to address the fact that it can be the parents’ fault for not having a better relationship. Bruce has proved to be bull-headed and stubborn to the point of self sabotage time and time again and it extends into what makes Jason Jason, the Robin that kept fighting and kept living and kept trying while Batman pushed him and pulled him and gave him mixed messages to the very last second. That a lot of interactions with the family where Jason has pulled away was onset by the act of members pushing him away first, then not recognizing in themselves when they had put something else above him and his relationship with them.

Literally so true, so are you’re tags about how he has such a big heart that takes so many lashes.

I’m not going to stand here and be like “Dick was so mean to Jason in BiB >:((( what’s wrong with him! he should be nice and grateful >:(((” Cause it’s not a good story with good characterization except for Jason using a telegram and staying stop for drama when he literally doesn’t need to (this boy). I don’t blame dick for that shit. I do, however, blame dick for his crassness with the crowbar joke, and all the others for all the death jokes they make. Like they have the right to joke about it.

It comes across as “You died, Jason! It was sad! We’re coping! It’s gallows humor”

Like ya...Jason died. specifically Jason. He is at the center of it all. It’s not gallows humor if you’re not the one truly on the chopping block. What does Damian need to cope with? He didn’t even Know Jason?

You’re point about Jason needing to be the bratty kid so he can more easily be reintegrated! Fandom doesn’t want Bruce in the wrong because they want Good Dad!Bruce which I understand, but also I don’t want that at the expense of Jason’s character. It goes hand in hand with the idea, of why i brought up the death jokes thing, that Jason’s the one constantly bringing up his death and joking about it when really it’s everyone else doing it around him.

Everyone so easily disregards Jason, and for what? To play happy family? When Jason, in canon, is the only one trying to play? Bruce is the one that’s leading him with a carrot and stick, slowly turning the stove top hotter and hotter so the frog doesn’t know he’s boiling alive.

I said this in another meta, but Jason being systematically destroyed trying to be perfect could be a great story line if in he end he realized what was happening and got to go off and heal, but that will never happen because the bats are the good guys, the heroes, and Jason’s the “fuck-up” who they have to “fix.” We’ll never get resolution because then Bruce has to admit he’s wrong for a lot of shit, and, well, hmmm. Therefore, we’re always going to have this abusive co-dependent relationship between Bruce and Jason where, no matter what Jason does, he’ll never be good enough
