OC Tag Game

I was tagged by @ronqueesha​ to show off some of my OCs. It's been a LONG while since I've actually answered a tag so thank you so much for tagging me anyway. This round is going to include my Mass Effect OCs, as well as some D&D and Original Fiction (say whaaat?) characters. I will tag - only if you want to play - @butchdollyparton​, @forlornmelody​, @happychica​, @shretl​, and @vulpixelates​. Here we go!

Favorite OC: How do you choose your favorite child? Javi, Mara, and Wyatt have been getting the most attention recently? Veerla and Donovan will always hold a very important place in my life. And Shava's (recent) death was probably one of my favorite D&D moments ever. So all of them. So there.

Oldest OC: Ariella, Mara, and Veerla all came from my first Shepard, my proto!femShep who had little bits of each of them. I don't have any art of HER - the forerunner - but here is some FANTASTIC art of the ones she split into.

Newest OC: Peter Hastings, an original character for an original fiction story. His "role" has been around for a while but I'd been struggling with who the CHARACTER was until Peter showed up and corrected basically everything I thought I knew about him.

Meanest OC: Anyone who knows my characters knows the answer to this question . . . one Mr. Chris Ramsey. I made him with one purpose in mind - to be awful - and he has done better than I ever could have hoped for.

Softest OC: After some debate, I think I'm going with Wyatt from my newest original fiction story. All this guy wants out of life is to make the people he cares about feel safe and secure and happy and loved. His happily ever after is being a house husband and taking care of the people he loves. Runner up goes to Mara Payne but I think Wyatt has just a bit of an edge over her.

Most Aloof/Standoffish OC: Another one I struggled with (and I think my answer may surprise some people) but I've decided on Veerla Sterling for this one. She isn't (unprovoked) mean or rude or unkind but she does generally keep people at a (polite, generally amicable) distance. It's hard for her to get to the point where she TRUSTS someone or considers them a FRIEND.

Dumbest (Affectionate) OC: Definitely Io Silverfrond. From the Last Chance Brigade D&D campaign. Her first character description was: "disaster lesbian too dumb to know when her father-in-law is trying to kill her" and I don't think I will ever come up with anything better.

Dumbest (Derogatory) OC: I think I'm going with Dmitri Barton - Donovan's ex-almost-fiance - for this one. He's actually pretty intelligent but he is TRULY lawful neutral and inflexible in it. His blind faith in the law and his inability? unwillingness? to question the letter of the law versus the spirit eventually leads to the end of his relationship with Donovan.

Smartest OC: Toss up between Shava Naïlo and Ale Rivera Aragón. Shava is my nerdy, reverse-rogue, scholar. Ale is a nuclear engineer in modern universes and a paleo-engineer in Mass Effect universes. I will say that Ale has the better combination of intelligence AND wisdom, whereas Shava leans more high intelligence/low wisdom.

Horniest OC: Only one of my characters has dragged their partner into a bathroom because dirty dancing in the club had them hot and bothered so I think Javi Rivera Aragón takes this cake. Then again, getting him hot and bothered seems to be a particular talent of Scott's so really who is to blame here?

OC You’d Bang: So many of them (basically all of them that are interested in women) but if I only get to pick one I'm going with Donovan Lír.

OC You’d Be Best Friends With IRL: Again, SO many of them. Basically all of them EXCEPT Chris. But again, if I only get one I think I'll go with Ariella Bennet. She's kind, friendly, optimistic, and I think we'd get on well.

Hiya, bagoggles! Thanks for the ask!

D&D Effect is a Mass Effect fantasy AU, specifically using 5E Dungeons and Dragons. Tech and biotics are magic, Normandy is a skyship, and Sovereign is a cursed suit of armor that corrupts its wearer. (Not going to lie, a large part of this project was driven by wanting to stat out and equip a bunch of D&D characters...) I don't have much of it done but here's a little snippet.

The woman spun toward him, a blind fury burning in her dark brown eyes. Her fingers tightened around her axe and Shepard’s hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword. He was trying to decide if he actually wanted to draw it when Kaidan stepped between them.
“He’s a friend, Ash.” Her attention turned toward him and for a moment she snarled but Kaidan simply raised his hands and repeated. “He’s a friend.”
At that her demeanor changed immediately, the rage draining into exhaustion. Kaidan took another step toward her and bumped his shoulder into hers and the worst of the burns on her belly healed over.
“Kaidan,” she murmured, her voice ragged.
“What happened? Where’s the rest of the guard?”
“They’re gone.” She leaned into Kaidan a little more and repeated. “They’re all gone. The devils came and—”
“Devils haven't been seen on this plane since the Sundering,” Shepard cut her off.
“They’re here now,” she answered, an edge slipping into her voice.
“They must have come for the Beacon,” Kaidan suggested before either of them could argue further.

The Death of a Toaster centered around Veerla's legendary inability to cook. It also features Brendan Dewan, whom she broke up with in "Square Peg." Here's a bit from the beginning for you!

“Shit, shit shit! Dammit, no! No! No, no, no, no, no! Fuck!”
Donovan wasn’t sure whether it was the alarm or the swearing that actually woke him up. The smell of something burning hit him next and he bolted out of the bedroom without bothering to pull on pants. He rounded the corner to the kitchen just in time to see Veerla yank the fire extinguisher off the wall, all the while spewing a steady stream of expletives. Smoke was pouring out of his toaster but he didn’t see any actual flames. Yet.
“Cancel alarm,” she snapped, emptying the extinguisher onto his countertop.

What Color Character Are You

Tagged by @ronqueesha to take this quiz. Thank you, hon, for always making me feel like one of the cool kids! I will tag, only if you want to play, @alyssalenko, @ghostxofxartemis, @happychica​, @theheroofoakvale​, and anyone else who wants to play!

ARIELLA SHEPARD: YELLOW

Yellow characters tend to be positive and upbeat people, who try to see the bright side in most situations (although the older a character is, the less likely they’ll be as openly positive). They’re friendly and energetic much of the time, and while often genuine it can become a cover for their more negative feelings. They tend to have a lot of skill in one specific area which they have to work hard to harness and use properly. Because of this skill they can be put up on a pedestal and have high expectations placed on them to perform. Often these expectations also come from themselves. They have a strong sense of responsibility and duty placed on them that can cause them to develop a bit of a savior complex, blaming themselves for not being able to protect everyone around them. They are diffusers and peacemakers, preferring to be in harmony with everyone, sometimes making it confusing when others around them are not this way. They’re pretty cheerful and bubbly and usually the light of their friend group. They care about their friends a lot, and go out of their way to show it, although it can cause them to be jealous when they feel as if they aren’t being included. While kind people, they also have a competitive streak and like to win. They love fun and are likely to get sidetracked and drag their friends along with them. Others are able to relax in their presence and enjoy themselves, and it’s hard not to like a yellow character. While these characters may be warm and diligent though, they also have a hard time taking risks, generally preferring to stay in their comfort zone. They can have a bit of both a main character and a savior complex because of how much responsibility they put on themselves, and while well meaning it can irk other characters. Sometimes they go too far trying to help and interfere with others, and when they don’t want to do something they will often shut down and distract themselves from it. They are surprisingly mature for how innocent they seem, and when in a healthy place they always give their best effort. They are wise and interpersonal and really tie their friend group together. Yellow characters need to be given a safe space to release negative emotions without letting them build up, and they need people in their life who will help them keep a healthy balance of work and play without pressuring them too much.

VEERLA SHEPARD: RED

Red characters tend to be both quiet and observant as well as loud and dramatic. They are often brash and impulsive, and tend to act on instinct rather than planning ahead. They are quite self-sacrificing, often veering into self-destructive, and they push themselves to their limits trying to succeed. They tend to be stubborn, and it might take a lot to change their mind. They have a hard time expressing their feelings, and may come off as either emotionless, self-absorbed, or perpetually angry. They don’t have a ton of friends, and when they do, it’s often by circumstance rather than choice (although they grow to fiercely love their friends). They are not usually innately good at fitting into social situations, and can be awkward and out of place in them. They can come off as unhumorous because of how sincere and honest they tend to be, but tend to just have a dryer, sarcastic sense of humor. They do often think of others first, but their motivations for it might not be entirely selfless. They usually have a hard time conceivably lying, and are quite earnest without meaning to be.They put their full effort into what they do, and push themselves to improve at all costs. They get easily defensive, and feel like they have to prove themselves to earn anyone’s respect. They have a strong sense of internal morality and high standards for themselves. They also hold others to their internal high standards, which can cause a lot of conflict if not worked out. They tend to have bad relationships with their parental figures, who were usually either absent or abusive, and contributed to their toxic view of themselves. At their core, red characters want to be loved and accepted, but have often been denied it, leading them to build up lots of defenses. Others need to be patient with them and give them a safe space to be themselves as they open up and begin to flourish.

DONOVAN SHEPARD: PURPLE

Purple characters are strong leaders and fierce people with a strong moral compass. They tend to be lost in the background, occupied by characters with louder personalities, but these characters are dependable and wonderful in their own right. They are poised and collected and can remain calm under pressure. They are also charismatic and supportive. They aren’t likely to accept half-assed excuses, but they are still compassionate. In addition to leading, they also often take on mentor roles with the people that they lead. People like following them, and while not particularly witty, they have a good sense of humor and an easy nature to them that causes others to enjoy spending time with them. They can vary between being very uptight and stern, as well as chill and lighthearted. They are affectionate towards the people they care about, but they can come across as intimidating to people who don’t know them. They usually establish themselves as generally friendly, but people know not to seriously upset or cross them. Although they are great and well-rounded people, they can become unsure of themselves if their leadership fails in any aspect. While they are patient, they can also become quite frustrated by people not understanding their perspective. They aren’t necessarily inflammatory, but often prefer fighting first and conversing later. They can jump to conclusions and stick to decisions that the people around them don’t like following, in order to not be seen as pushovers or indecisive. Purple characters need people in their life who allow them not to lead and to just join in the fun like everyone else, while also reassuring them that they are an important part of whatever group or organization they have found themselves in.

Yes, Veerla did do it again. This piece is a silly bit of fluff from early in the her relationship with (Donovan) Lír. Here's a bit of dialogue between her and a responding firefighter. (Who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Ask me how they met.)

“[Lír] let you in the kitchen?”
“Well, he certainly won’t after this.” Veerla leaned against the counter, glancing ruefully at the toaster before pulling it toward her to inspect it. “Know anything about toasters?”
“Besides not to let you near mine?”
“Obviously. It seems I’m in the market for a new one.”

Another tag from a million years ago (my e-mail notification is from February 29th of last year) that I am only now getting to. This one is from @ronqueesha - thank you for your patience! I’ll tag (only if you want to play) @alyssalenko, @bagog, @mallaidhsomo, and @swaps55. No pressure!

Veerla Shepard / Donovan Lír / Kaidan Alenko

1. How did they first meet?

Donovan and Kaidan were the first to meet, several years pre-canon when Donovan had just signed on with Alliance and Kaidan was a red sand addict following BAaT. Donovan played a big part in getting Kaidan out of that life and they stayed friends from then on.

Veerla and Donovan met while they were both working for CODA (my Alliance CIA). Veerla was on a mission and needed support for part of it. Donovan’s status as CODA agent with extensive military history got him the assignment. They worked well together and liked each other, so a while later Donovan requested her for a similar role in one of his jobs. That one went sideways fast and the fallout bonded them significantly.

Veerla and Kaidan first met on the Normandy during Mass Effect 1. Her universe is extensively AU and she doesn’t stay on the Normandy but they do cross paths several times throughout “ME1″ and develop something of a professional friendship during that time.

2. Were they immediately interested / attracted, or did that come later? / 3. What did they think of each other at first? (I also answered these together!)

Donovan was not attracted to Kaidan at all when they first met. Besides the fact that he was dating and in love with someone else at the time, he saw Kaidan as someone who was lost and needed a friend. At the time, there was too much of a difference in power for him to find Kaidan attractive.

Kaidan was immediately attracted to Donovan, though he also resented him somewhat. He was in a bad place and was jealous of Donovan having everything he wanted, a job he enjoyed, a committed partner, a good relationship with his family, etc.

Veerla and Donovan were both immediately attracted to each other, however they both knew neither of them were in a position to commit to relationship. Both of them have complex personal histories and careers that make it hard to maintain relationships. They started with casual flirting then friendship, which deepened over time as they put in the work on themselves to be good partners, until they were ready to take the plunge into a meanful relationship. 

Kaidan thought Veerla was pretty but had no intentions of pursuing. He wasn’t looking for a romantic relationship at the time. He also found out pretty soon after their meeting that she and Donovan were together so even if he had been interested, he wouldn’t have made a move.

Children: Two, Charlotte “Charlie” Braden (technically her step-daughter) and Benjamin “Ben” Connor Gray

Fun fact: No one in their household has the same last name. Veerla, Donovan, and Kaidan all keep their own even after they’re married. Charlie uses her mother’s last name and Ben uses Kaidan’s father’s last name. (“Alenko” is his mother’s.)
