Imagine asari children when they first meet species that have more than one gender.

I bet they have a hard time understanding the concept. Their vocabulary probably didn't have the distinction before other species were introduced. I just can't picture how much that would have to be explained that even our languages have feminine and masculine rules to it.

They must think the biological separation of genders is so inefficient in an evolutionary standpoint.

But, then again, Liara does use male and female pronouns on Thessia in the temple where the beacon is so maybe they have known from Prothean influences? Or maybe our translators just jumble through our known vocabulary and say 'yes, they said this gender. Ah, yes. That must be it.'

Going with the translator thought...

There was a post a while ago talking about Google translate's issues going from non-gendered titles/professions in one language to gendered versions in another. I don't know the actual formula it used but it automatically gave you the gender that more often had that job.

The example the post used was that if you asked Google to translate "nurse" from English into Spanish, the result was "enfermera," which actually means a nurse who is woman. (Versus a nurse who is a man, which would be "enfermero.") BUT if you asked for "doctor," you would get "médico" (a male doctor), not "médica" (a female doctor).

This is not the case any more. NOW you will get both options with the indication that one is masculine and one is feminine. But there is at least an (outdated) precedence for translators going, "Hrmmm... Most deities of this domain are goddesses so... sure! 'Goddess' it is!"
