Moon > Venus > Mercury > Mars > Jupiter
The Sailor Scouts! I Watched some sailor moon on hulu for Nostalgic purposes. It was better than I remembered (thanks, Viz) and made me want to do a fun character design challenge! I used only the first season and tried to capture their personalities and little details in each character’s uniforms. I’ve always been a huge fan of Adventure Time’s gender swap mentality of staying true to the characters as much as possible, not treating it as a joke, and just trying to design legitimate characters while respecting the source! That said, this was a blast.
Side note- Lightning impacts are so crazy looking that they look fake!
*edited to add a higher quality image of Mars- those reds compressed badly.
yyyeeeeEEEEEESSSSSSSSS
What bothers me about Sailor Moon is that almost all of the Sailor Scouts’s powers have to do with the god their planets are named after, except for Sailor Mercury. Why does she have Water Powers? Sailor Neptune has water powers, Mercury is the god of Travel, she should have like… Wind powers or Speed? right?? idk its always bothered me /:
It’s because in Japanese astrology, Mercury is associated with water. The Japanese name for Mercury (水星, suisei) contains the kanji for water.
It’s the same for all the Inner senshi:
- Mercury (水星) - water
- Venus (金星) - metal/gold
- Mars (火星) - fire
- Jupiter (木星) - wood
Some of them use powers that combine these elements with the associated Roman deity, which is why Jupiter uses both plants and lightning, or Venus uses love as well as a golden chain.
As for why she has any similarity with Neptune, Sailor Neptune was created years after Mercury. There was no reason at the beginning of Sailor Moon to think that there would ever be a Neptune – Naoko Takeuchi never planned for the story to go past the first season. And while they both have water-based attacks, Mercury shows control over all forms of water (including fog and ice) while Neptune specifically only uses the sea.
