I wish I could explain this to allistics: I know it looks like autistic people are No Fun and Stuck In Their Ways with their ‘picky’ eating habits and their resistance to change and all. But if your world was full of carefully-concealed torture traps, you’d probably be a bit less ‘adventurous’ too.

Consider these fictional examples:

Oh, you want to go somewhere new to eat? Well, now most restaurants serve menu items which secretly have the texture of cold snot. Good luck telling which ones to avoid!

Ordering new clothes online? Now some online stores have items made from steel wool – that aren’t labeled! Hope you get one of the soft ones.

Going to hang out at a new place? Fifty-fifty odds their lighting will consist of billion-watt industrial floodlights instead of the more usual fixtures. Or perhaps they will be playing the melodious sounds of two-dozen colicky babies over their sound system. Maybe you enjoy gambling with those odds, but I don’t.

Everyone, even allistics, have a threshold of sensory irritation they just can’t ignore…it’s just lower for autistic people. My partner can block out the lights/sounds that drive me crazy…but she’s extremely touch-sensitive, so if I say “This input is just like being tickled”, she gets it. Have you ever seen a movie where someone’s interrogated under a spotlight? Imagine facing that while driving home, every day.

It’s all relative, people.

IF YOU'RE NOT AUTISTIC, LISTEN THE FUCK UP

I'm autistic and here's shit you need to know!

  • ABA therapy is abuse. There is no debate on this topic.
  • Fuck Autism Speaks, they're ableist and they misuse the money they're given.
  • If you're not autistic, I don't want to hear your opinion about anything related to autism. Just listen to us.
  • The puzzle piece has ableist origins.
  • Autistic people are disabled. Autism is a developmental disability. Disabled is not a bad word.
  • You don't know more about autism than autistic people. I don't care if your entire family is autistic, you don't know more than autistic people.
  • Mocking people for their interests and calling them cringey is ableist.
  • Vaccines don't cause autism, and even if they did, you should still vaccinate your kids.
  • I am not afraid of noise/light etc. Certain sensory inputs cause me pain.
  • The r word is a slur. Don't say it.
  • Non-verbal doesn't mean we can't hear or understand what you are saying.
  • Verbal communication is not the only method of communicating. Just because a person is non-verbal, doesn't mean they can't respond to what you're saying.
  • Sign language, writing, sound boards, and cards with words on them are all form of non-verbal communication.
  • Do not post a video of your child having a meltdown or shutdown on the internet. Imagine how you would feel if someone posted a video of you on the internet at one of your worst moments without your consent.
  • The Big Bang Theory is shit representation. So is Adam and Atypical. If it's not written by an autistic person, its probably shit. Neurotypical writers can include autistic characters, but they cant write stories about being autistic.

I don't agree with all of these, but for most I agree 100%.

I will add that making a mentally disabled character only to be the stupid comic relief that ruins everything is ableist.

If you guys have ADD/ADHD, autism, OCD, or something else that affects your ability to concentrate, I highly recommend the chrome extension Mercury Reader. You just open whatever link you're using, then click on the MR icon (it should look like a rocket) and it'll simplify the page so that it's in a focus-friendly layout. Instead of having random pictures and word boxes all over the screen, it'll be in a vertical format with nothing to distract you so you can focus on what's important. You can also adjust the text size (small, medium, large), font (serif, sans), and theme (light, dark). And the best part is, it's completely free! It's honestly one of the best things I've ever downloaded.

This is an article without the extension. See that messy format, and how the actual article content only takes up a fraction of the page? It's no wonder it took me 7 hours to write that paper.

The same article, this time with Mercury. The user-friendly settings are at the top, and the rest of the article is formatted vertically down the middle with no free-roaming pictures or words. How nice.
