- now sit down and let me tell you
- about the time Yennefer and Jaskier end up celebrating together
- ok because Jaskier LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES BIRTHDAYS
- loves them
- he loves to make a huge fuss and spoil and embarrass people
- and it’s a really good thing he got Geralt to tell him his birthday before Geralt discovered what a Huge Mistake that was
- because Jaskier waited on him hand and foot, made their camp (which Geralt had to re-make), spoiled him with a bottle of wine (which Roach had had to carry for the last few towns), even cooked their dinner (which he burned and left out the hooves, Geralt’s favorite part because witcher canon is horrible), and pulled out his lute to let Geralt enjoy the wonders of Jaskier’s tongue, thankfully promptly putting the lute away and sucking Geralt off repeatedly and with great enthusiasm until his neck cramped up so badly he had to stop (several hours later)
- so when Jaskier asks how Geralt celebrated Yennefer’s birthday, Geralt tells him she doesn’t celebrate, and will not reveal when her birthday is
- Jaskier becomes obsessed; he doesn’t like her or anything, but c’mon it’s a birthday, and Yennefer will not tell him
- (partly because Geralt told her what happened, blushing, and she was horrified to feel a little tendril of warmth rise in her core at that blush, at the thought of the bard’s little birthday gift, but partly because: )
- Jaskier constantly asks if today is her birthday. he has little treats and surprises for her just in case. he eventually just picks A Day of every month when they travel together to lay a flower crown on her head or present her with a vial of lilac oil or wine from touissant he was saving (which Roach was carrying)
- (Geralt can never seem to find all the bottles of wine Roach is carrying, and as much as he grumps about it, maybe that’s on purpose)
- and although the game began in spite, a sort of angry way for Jaskier to poke at Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship and how they don’t take care of each other, ever
- now he has to know
- because every time he hands her a little gift to unwrap, she tenses up
- and some part of him is screaming to reach out and hold her hands tightly and make sure she knows she’s safe and where the fuck did that come from
- (and she sees this quiet anger in his eyes, thinking at first, that it’s hatred, distrust, even jealousy, until she sees it enough and realizes it’s… not)
- so one day she tells him, not a little bashfully, that today is her birthday. belleteyn
- obviously that’s jaskier’s favorite holiday. there’s bonfires, there’s outdoor fucking, dick jokes: i mean that’s the trifecta right there
- but instead of heading to the bonfire, he stays
- and she is a n n o y e d
- and she snaps out something about how isn’t this his favorite holiday and shouldn’t he be meeting geralt at the bonfire, for he won’t have any luck here
- and for once, jaskier says nothing
- but he listens to that voice and looks her in the eye, so
- softly
- he reaches out and holds her hands
- just holds them, and looks at her, and smiles
- and her entire body is tingling and she doesn’t know why
- but they stay there
- because it’s belleteyn, and this is something new
