My artwork for the @eskelbigbang and @lutes-and-dandelions wonderful fic called “Choices are the Hinges of Destiny” (ao3 link in reblogs)
also setting aside the fact that all you pearl-clutching morons are having a nice old wank over an event you didn’t have to join and started whining about how a specific event not geared towards dead dove or kink specifically asked you to pls keep it not gory or kinky IF YOU JOINED....
it doesn’t have ‘implications for the wider fandom’, you incomprehensible troglodytes. Nobody wants to remove kink fics or gore fics or non-con fics from ao3 or the fandom entirely. It’s a collaborative community event not geared towards those topics (THAT YOU REALLY WANT CONSENT FROM PPL TO TALK ABOUT WITH THEM BEFORE YOU START YELLING ABOUT IT. IT’S ABOVE A LOT OF PEOPLE’S THRESHOLDS FOR STUFF. IT CAN BE TRIGGERRING. IT IS LIKELY TO BE TOO MUCH) that just wants to make sure that participants do not end up seeing triggering content. That’s it.
how far are you going to blow shit out of proportion? from claiming that not wanting to expose non-consenting audiences - and this is NOT about minors, because many adults don’t consent to talk abt some of the banned fucking topics, IDIOTS - to gore and hard kink is a slippery-slope-little-fallacy to Antis Taking Over And AO3 Being Torn Down From The Foundation.... from claiming that the whole ‘eskel does fisstech and fucked a succubus’ line wouldn’t fly (which it would btw. canon would fly in the EBB because fisstech isnt banned and neither is the succubus-fucking as long as it’s CONSENSUAL and they don’t do like.... scat or w/e, probably said that wrong, oh well), to starting massive fucking harassment campaigns against the EBB (and YES it is harassment because you’re tearing down their hard work for reasons you mostly made up)...
like. mentions aren’t forbidden. EBB mods are not starting a morality crusade, they just want to make sure that their actual participants aren’t uncomfortable.
also it aint about the content. there’s a witcher dead dove bang running rn with like 15 participants. there are kink memes, and 18+ servers and challenges that are a safe space for YOU to write more explicit and darker works. the fact that you’ve decided to latch onto an event most of you have loudly declared are not joining is very telling, and bloody hell, it looks ugly on ya.
you entitled little wankstains, if the restrictions irk you so much, DON’T JOIN THE BANG. but for fuck’s sake, the moment you used your fandom clout to start a smear campaign against some people who just wanted to host a fun and inclusive, voluntary event - to the point where a ‘spite’ event was started to challenge them for no reason - you crossed a massive fucking line and the fact that you’re still insisting that the EBB mods are the bad guys is not only piss-poor behaviour, it’s also cruel.
stop pretending that this is about anything other than the opportunity to start stroking your own ego as well as having a wank to your own twisted sense of righteous entitlement and have some fucking compassion.
The most messages I’ve ever gotten on tumblr and it’s for fandom wank. LMAO that definitely says SOMETHING, though I’m not wholly sure what.
But hey, keep ‘em coming. I’d much rather you bother me than continue to bully the Eskel Big Bang mods. So...
No but tbh, you’ve been decently courteous so far, so I will continue to assume that everyone is engaging in good faith. Maybe that’s naive, but any other way of living just sounds exhausting.
"Inclusivity is different BECAUSE everyone has different needs." "and btw how are DNW lists any different from content guidelines???" DNW lists address the problem of different needs by allowing every individual to specify what their needs are. Blanket content bans (a) cannot ever protect everyone and (b) actively exclude people. Allowing for individual DNWs is how fandom has always solved the problem of different needs - including those of minors - in large-scale events.
Okay, wonderful. Who checks the DNWs? Who builds the lists? Who pairs people up based on their DNWs? Can you do it for events with 50+ people? Because everything I’ve heard says no, it’s workable for about groups of 25 people max and maybe a team of mods.
And no, it’s not how fandom has “always” solved the problem. There is no “always” with fandom - it’s an ever evolving thing that we create culturally by engaging with each other as fans of a piece of media. Some things are more common than others, yes. Nothing is universal.
But you know what IS common? KINK TOMATO. Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That’s Okay. That’s the philosophy by which I engage in fandom. You know what’s not covered under that? Illegal activity that can cause very real harm to people.
That said, thank you for answering my question. The answer is: there’s no difference, it’s just a matter of scale.
I haven't seen a single instance where anyone has argued for sending inappropriate content to minors, and I think it's worth pointing out that totally vanilla, consensual sexual content is inappropriate for minors, and yet isn't on the banned topics list. Large-scale events do need ways to prevent sending inappropriate content to minors, but these involve managing who is paired with whom in a bang/exchange - as the EBB plans to do for 18+ content - not banning certain kinds of content outright.
You haven’t seen a single instance? Really? Because I think https://fisstech-and-succubi.tumblr.com/ was pretty clear that they will not be checking ages and therefore will be criminally liable if a minor participates and receives explicit content. By the way, so will the other participants. So like, if that’s the stand you want to make, fine. But becoming a registered sex offender because you participated in a not-well-set-up event seems like a bad call to me.
As for having an actual discussion, this post makes for a great explanation and starting point on the negative aspects of banning certain content types outright, and other ways we can make events in Witcher fandom inclusive: brighteyedjill(.)tumblr(.)com(/)post(/)639433383561363456
I know the history of censorship in fandom. I lived through it. I went through all the different platforms, from ff.net to livejournal to tumblr to others. But you know something? There is a difference between a for-profit company saying “mmm, having anything that mentions CSA is bad, let’s blanket ban it all. Including those CSA support groups. Who would need those, right?” and an individual saying, “in this event (which is VOLUNTARY, by the way), we would like not to see graphic portrayals of these things because there are 2 fucking mods building an entire event and doing it for the first time and they would like to actually not fucking trigger someone or expose minors to ILLEGAL content. And just to be super, 100% clear: sending someone you didn’t know what a minor porn is STILL A CRIME!
As for inclusivity - for who? Inclusivity is different BECAUSE everyone has different needs. If, for example, I participate in an event that has no content restrictions, I stand a risk of being badly triggered. On the other hand, if I participate in an event that has restrictions, I cannot write that content FOR THAT EVENT. I can write it elsewhere, if I want to. No one is stopping me from posting it.
Again, this isn’t an issue of censorship (and btw how are DNW lists any different from content guidelines???). This is an issue of providing a space in fandom that is safe for both minors and adults to engage in.
So I ask again: why are people so desperate to expose minors to dead dove content? Because that is literally what you are arguing for. And frankly, that’s not an argument I will bother engaging with, because if you don’t understand why that’s a problem, then for fucks sake, never approach a child. Ever.
"I don’t know about historic fandom events. The ones that came up in my googling were recent, but they all had restrictions. If that wasn’t the case before, I think that’s a bigger issue than one event, and I wouldn’t know where to start." People are starting right here, by calmly pointing out that large-scale fandom events have *not* generally had limits on allowable content, and explaining why content bans are *not* the best way to be inclusive (and have other negative effects besides).
Except what they’re actually doing is bullying the moderators and bashing the event. Look, if people want to have an actual discussion about how purity culture has affected fandom, LET’S HAVE IT!
I understand what you’re saying, that content bans can be a problem. You know what’s also a problem? Sending an explicit fic to a minor. Sending dead dove content to a minor. Sending a story about noncon to a minor. All of those are what people are arguing for right now, and if you don’t understand why that’s a problem, then I don’t know what to say to you.
This isn’t an issue of censorship. EVERY event that includes underage people has restrictions, BECAUSE there are minors involved. IT SHOULD HAVE RESTRICTIONS! Unless you want to go to jail as a sex offender because you sent porn to a minor, then YES, there should be restrictions. If you don’t agree with the specific restrictions, fine. Don’t participate.
This is an optional, fan-led, FREE event, in which minors are encouraged to participate. If you have a problem with making sure that minors don’t come face to face with explicit, graphic noncon, then stay the fuck away from me. Period.
Why are y’all so desperate to have access to making sure minors read your dead dove shit???? Like... maybe that’s not how you intend to come off, but it’s definitely how it’s happening.
I agree, censorship in fandom is a problem. You know what’s not a problem? Setting down guidelines for a SPECIFIC event in order to ensure that ALL participants, minors and adults, are safe.
But if you’re so desperate to have a fucking 16 year old read your woundfucking shit or whatever, then I don’t want you anywhere near ANYONE.
