I'm confused. Wasn't Dick training Rose from the original Nightwing run not the new 52?

he had the arc in grayson's run where slade tried to force him to take her under his wing, but he wasn't the one who originally trained her. she'd already been around for years by their time together, and even then, that whole plotline really only seemed to last like… maybe a couple weeks

he had absolutely nothing to do with her when she was first introduced, and just really didn't play much of a role in her story overall--especially not at first

when she was originally introduced, she was sent to the titans, where roy was the leader, and dick wasn't even on the team. roy was the one who took her in

this team didn't get to stay together long, but she stuck with him and was carried over into the Titans book, where she was working as lian's nanny and was seemingly living with him (or living in the tower because of him, at the very least)

roy was one of the most significant people in her life, especially early on, whereas she and dick barely ever interacted. even in the arc where she was "training" with dick, she was talking about roy because she pretty much only knew dick as "that dude roy used to hang out with"

but! this has now all been erased in favor of replacing everything with basically a remixed version of those few issues from grayson's run where everything revolves around dick. now, instead of sending her to the titans, as soon as slade found out about rose, he just took her straight to dick

dick is now the first (and seemingly pretty much only) hero she really knew. instead of actual friends, she just had… dick. and slade (yikes)

i don't know if it was an intentional parallel, but the one part where dick's actually interacting with her kinda mirrors the original titans' "training exercise" scene, and comparing the two is... honestly kinda depressing lol

originally, she was with a bunch of people who were there because they wanted to be, actually liked and cared about her, enjoyed being around her, and trusted each other enough to not even bother hiding their identities

now, she's alone in the woods with a dude who's only there because he's forced to be (and also slade perched in a tree like a gargoyle), who won't relax and just let her have fun for even a second (because, again, he doesn't even really want to be there), and who doesn't trust her enough to let her know who he is (also maybe most offensive of all is her crush on kyle being changed to dick, too... they retconned her good taste 😭)

so yes! it was a thing in Nightwing, but it was just one arc, and he had next to nothing to do with her before that. now, those few issues have been made… basically her entire backstory, and a lot of her relationships have been erased to give dick more of a role
