TOP 10 MOVIES FOR CROSSOVERS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (2009-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Movies Crossover Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In March 27 2009, FFN launched support for crossover fanfiction. Before this date, authors either posted their crossovers in just one category and noted that it was a crossover in its summary, or posted them in one of the generic crossover categories in the Misc. section (such as X-overs, or Movies X-overs). There wasn’t a filter to screen all crossovers of specific fandoms back then.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • Interestingly enough, the crossover sections don’t seem to be suffering from a total fanfiction discrepancy, unlike the sections for non-crossover fanfiction.
  • Please refer to this post for more fanfiction bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 OTHER MEDIA FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)

  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Other Media Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • Fandom tags that are no longer in the Other Media category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
  • For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as MS Paint Adventures which later on merged with Homestuck, and Internet Personalities which later on merged with Video Blogging RPF), I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year.
  • Dream SMP & Rock Music RPF were added to the Other Media cetegory in 2022, that's why they just suddenly popped up in the end.
  • Disney Theatrical Animated Universe wasn't in the Other Media Category in 2021, that's why they just suddenly popped up in the end. However, it was in this category in 2019-2020 under a different name: Disney - All Media Types.
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 MOVIES ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Movies Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In 2000-2006, FFN used Miscellaneous Movies as a catch-all tag for all books that didn’t have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Movies in 2007 before it was removed by 2008.
  • In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.
  • You can't see it in the bar chart because there were lots of movements at the time, but in 2000, Austin Powers and The Professional were tied in 8th place with 4 fics. A Little Princess, Evil Dead/Army of Darkness, Monty Python, Rocky Horror and Shaolin Brothers and Sisters were tied in 9th place with 3 fics.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
  • This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Movies section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these series when I go to the specific series' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 MOVIE FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)

  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Movies Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • X-Men (Movieverse) was in 5th place in 2010, but it’s not reflected in the bar chart because this tag was disappeared from the Movies category in 2011-2012.
  • Star Trek: The Original Series, a tag used in the TV Shows and Movies category, was actually in the 9th place in 2010 but it’s not reflected in the bar chart because this tag was not in the Movies category in 2011-2013.
  • The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom was also in the top 10 from 2012-2020, but then was reduced to 5% of its 2020 total fanworks in 2021 onwards because The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types and The Avengers (Marvel Movies) was removed from its subtag list. I’m excluding it from the bar chart since it means it shouldn’t have been in the top 10 in the first place.
  • Thor - All Media Types was used in the Movies category in 2012-2017, existing alongside Thor (Movies) which has been in the Movie fandoms list since 2011. In 2018, Thor - All Media Types was removed from the Movies fandom list and works tagged with it now show up in Thor (Movies) instead. To avoid redundancy, Thor - All Media Types was left out of the bar chart but its numbers were used for Thor (Movies)’s total fanworks in 2012-2017 since it had around 188-3350 more fanworks than the latter in those years.
  • Marvel (Movies) was used in the Movies category in 2010-2016 and ranked in the top 10 from 2011-2016. In 2017, it was removed from the Movies fandom list and works tagged with it now show up in Marvel instead. To avoid redundancy, Marvel (Movies) was left out of the bar chart, though I did use its data in 2011-2012 for Marvel since Marvel was not in the Movies category in those years.
  • Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a subtag of Marvel and Marvel is a metatag for all Marvel works of various media, including comics and movies.
  • Serenity (2005) was in the Movies category until 2020, after which it was removed and worked tagged with it was redirected to Firefly (TV 2002) instead.
  • As you can see, broad fandom tags/multicategory tags have dominated the rankings in the Movies category. I might make another version of this bar chart race leaving out the multicategory tags, though it might take a while.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏
