TOP 10 FANDOMS FOR CROSSOVERS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Crossovers section and the Crossover entries in the regular Misc section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In March 27 2009, FFN launched support for crossover fanfiction. Before this date, authors either posted their crossovers in just one category and noted that it was a crossover in its summary, or posted them in one of the generic crossover categories in the Misc. section (such as X-overs, or Cartoons X-overs). There wasn’t a filter to screen all crossovers of specific fandoms back then.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • Interestingly enough, the crossover sections don’t seem to be suffering from a total fanfiction discrepancy, unlike the sections for non-crossover fanfiction.
  • Please refer to this post for more fanfiction bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 FANDOMS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (2002-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the each Section on the same date nearest or on November 29 of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • FFN used to allow Real Person Fics up until October 12th, 2002, which is why NSYNC immediately plummets off the chart at the start of the video.
  • The Books, TV and Play sections did not have an archived page on January 13, 2013, so I used the January 12 data.
  • The Play section also did not have an archived page on October 27, 2010, so I used the October 26 data.
  • The Games, Music & Misc. sections did not have an archived page on June 1, so I used their June 2 data.
  • In 2000-2001, I couldn't find a date that had all the sections archived, so the bar charts starts at 2002.
  • By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
  • This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the each section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these categories when I go to the specific categories' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

BOOKS WITH THE MOST CROSSOVER FANFICTION ON FANFICTION.NET (2009-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Book Crossover Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In March 27 2009, FFN launched support for crossover fanfiction. Before this date, authors either posted their crossovers in just one category (such as Naruto) and noted that it was a crossover in its summary, or posted them in one of the generic crossover categories in the Misc. section (such as X-overs or Anime X-overs). There wasn’t a filter to screen all crossovers of specific fandoms back then.

TOP 10 BOOKS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Books Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to [...] is short for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Romance of the 3 [...] is short for Romance of the 3 Kingdoms.
  • In 2000-2003, FFN used Miscellaneous Novels as a catch-all tag for all books that didn’t have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Books in 2004-2007 before it was removed by 2008.
  • In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.
  • Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles was actually in third place in the year 2000 with 126 fanfiction. However, it was the only year FFN had fanfiction for her works, that’s why it doesn’t turn up in the bar chart race.
  • In 2001, a new category called Harry Potter Author Fics was in 4th place with 888 fanfiction, but this category was removed by the following year.
  • FFN also hosted Vampire Hunter fanfiction in 2001-2002, but was later on removed because its author L. K. Hamilton didn't want fanfiction of her works.
  • The Tamora Pierce category was in the Books Section from 2001-2009 as a catch-all category for Pierce’s works before it was removed by 2009.
  • Similarly, the L.J. Smith category was in the Books Section from 2000-2007 as a catch-all category for Smith’s works before it was removed sometime in 2009.
  • I've decided to keep the author categories in the bar chart race since most if not all of their series did not get their own category until their author's category was removed.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.

I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)
  • For example, HP currently has 844k fanfiction, but if you go to HP’s page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All, you’ll only get 800k fics. HP also has 51.3K crossover fanfiction, but adding those two still doesn’t equate to 844k...
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 BOOKS & LITERATURE ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS, SINGLE CATEGORY ONLY VERSION (2009-2022)

  • If you want to see the Books & Literature bar chart with the multi-category fandom tags included, please check this post.
  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Books & Literature Category on November 21 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered for fandoms belonging in only one category, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • The Harry Potter tag is used in multiple categories (Books, Movies & Games) so it has been excluded in the list. If you check the bar chart linked above however, you’ll see that it remains firmly in first place even when all the other multi-category fandoms are included.
  • Author - Works tags have also been excluded since it makes the list very redundant, especially when Good Omens rose up in the Top 10 in 2019 onwards. Good Omens is a subtag for PRATCHETT Terry - Works and GAIMAN Neil - Works. When Good Omens resurged in 2019, so did these 2 author tags, taking up 3 spots in the rankings. Good Omens accounts for 90%+ of RATCHETT Terry - Works and GAIMAN Neil - Works’ fanworks in 2022.
  • Here are the list of authors who would have made top 10 sometime in 2009-2022 if Author - Works were included: Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Rick Riordan, Stephen King, Alexandre Dumas, Lois McMaster Bujold, Tamora Pierce, and briefly Cassandra Clare before her author tag was removed from the Books & Literature Category in 2015 onwards. J. R. R. Tolkien also ranks high but would’ve been excluded from the list since his author tag is also turns up in the Movies category.
  • Fairy Tales & Related Fandom was in the Top 10 in 2013-2014 until much of the movies and TV shows in its subtags where removed in 2015, reducing its fanworks to 23% of its size in 2014. Some of the removed subtags were: Frozen. Tangled, Maleficent, and a bunch of other fairy tale movies. I’m excluding this tag from the list since it clearly would not have made top 10 without those subtags.
  • In 2013. the Mythology tag was removed from the Books& Literature list and Religion & Lore - Ambiguous Fandom tag was created. Mythology fanworks showed up in the latter’s filter instead.
  • Clearly, a novel tag’s fanworks increases more when it gains a movie/TV show/comic/cartoon adaptation. However, it’s hard to say if it’s because more people become interested in the reading the novels again after its adaptation was released, or if people who have seen the adaptation also tag the original novel when they post fanworks of its adaptation.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏
