TOP 10 PLAY/MUSICAL CROSSOVERS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (2009-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Plays Crossovers Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • In March 27 2009, FFN launched support for crossover fanfiction. Before this date, authors either posted their crossovers in just one category and noted that it was a crossover in its summary, or posted them in one of the generic crossover categories in the Misc. section (such as X-overs, or Cartoons X-overs). There wasn’t a filter to screen all crossovers of specific fandoms back then.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • Interestingly enough, the crossover sections don’t seem to be suffering from a total fanfiction discrepancy, unlike the sections for non-crossover fanfiction.
  • Please refer to this post for more fanfiction bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 PLAYS/MUSICALS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (2000-2022)

  • To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Plays/Musicals Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • The Plays/Musicals section was created in March 5, 2009. Before this date, play/musicals were found in the Misc. section.
  • Up until 2005, the only entries for plays/musicals were Musicals/Plays and Screenplays.
  • In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms. There wasn't any play/musical entry in the only archived page I have for that year.
  • Phantom of the Opera was removed from the Plays/Musicals section by 2011. All the fanfiction were transfered either to the Phantom of the Opera in the Book section or the Movies section. In 2015, Phantom of the Opera was added to the Plays/Musicals section again. However all but 1 fic were published in 2015 onwards.
  • Musicals/Plays, the catch-all category for all musicals/plays that don't have their own category, remained in the Misc. section with all the other Misc. [section] catrgories.
  • Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
  • By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
  • This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Plays/Musicals section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these categories when I go to the specific categories' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 THEATER FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)

  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Theater Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan was in the Theater category in November 29, 2022, but has been removed by the time this post is published, so I'm leaving it out of the chart.
  • Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon may be in the top 10, but only 1% of its fanworks come from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Musicals).
  • Fandom tags that are no longer in the Theater category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
  • For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as Romeo And Juliet - All Media Types which later on merged with Romeo And Juliet - Shakespeare, and Hamlet - All Media Types which later on merged with Hamlet - Shakespeare), I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year.
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 MOVIE FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS, SINGLE CATEGORY TAGS ONLY VERSION (2009-2022)

  • If you want to see the Movie bar chart with the multi-category fandom tags (such as Marvel and DCU) included, please check this post.
  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Movies Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered for fandoms belonging in only one category and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • In 2010, X-Men (Movieverse) was used as a catch-all tag for all X-Men movies. It was replaced with the tag X-Men (Movies) in 2011-2012, and then brought back to the Movies category list again in 2013. I’ve decided to use X-Men (Movies)’s 2011-2012 data for X-Men (Movieverse) since they’re tags for the same purpose and so X-Men (Movieverse)‘s 2010 data would be reflected in the bar chart.
  • The X-Men (Movies) tag dropped down to half its number of fanworks in 2013 after  X-Men (Movieverse) was brought back. It still remained in the Movies category until 2015, after which it was removed & replaced with X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) instead.
  • If you don't see a movie franchise on the chart, it may be because the franchise only has a multicategory tag and no Movies category only tag. (E.g. Thor (Movies), HP, variations of Star Trek)
  • Fandom tags that are no longer in the Movies category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
  • Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

TOP 10 BOOKS & LITERATURE FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)

  • To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Books & Literature Category on November 21 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
  • Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
  • Unspecified means that it doesn’t say in its title whether it is an “All Media Type” type tag or not. There’s a possibility that this tag only shows up in the Books & Literature category, or maybe in multiple categories, like in Movies and TV Shows too.
  • The fandoms in this category seems to be heavily skewed towards works with other media such as TV Shows, movies & games.
  • For example, 89% of the Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms fanworks in 2022 are tagged with Sherlock (TV). Only 5% of the fanworks here are specifically tags Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • The Dragon Age games are very popular and contribute to a big chunk of Dragon Age - All Media Types fanwork count. When you look at this tag’s top 10 fandoms filter in 2022, the novels (Dragon Age - Various Authors) contribute to only about 0.43% of this tag’s total fanworks.
  • 76% of A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms fanworks in 2022 are tagged with Game of Thrones (TV).
  • 52% of Módào Zǔshī fanworks in 2022 are also tagged with 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV) and 14% are also tagged with 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī (Cartoon).
  • 91% of Arthurian Mythology & Related Fandoms fanworks in 2022 are tagged with Merlin (TV).
  • Maybe it would have been better to do a bar chart with fandoms that only appear in a single category (In this case, the Books & Literature category.). Some of the fandoms that ranked have popular other media outside of TV Shows that boosted their rankings. It would take more effort to filter out, but let me know if you’re interested in seeing a bar chart race like this. If there’s enough interest, I might get motivated enough to work on it, haha.
  • Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏
