TOP 10 WEB VIDEO SERIES ON AO3 FOUND IN FANDOMS > OTHER MEDIA (2010-2023)

To make this ranking, all series titles in the Other Media category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then manually filtered since not all web video series were marked as such.
Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
Many authors started locking their works starting December 2022. It's most likely the reason the number of fanworks decreased or slowed down in 2023.
Bar chart starts at 2010 because there were no web series in Other Media in 2009.
The Dream SMP tag was only considered an Additional Tag in 2021-early 2022, which is why it's not listed in Other Media earlier than that.

TOP 10 FANDOMS FOR CROSSOVERS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Crossovers section and the Crossover entries in the regular Misc section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
In March 27 2009, FFN launched support for crossover fanfiction. Before this date, authors either posted their crossovers in just one category and noted that it was a crossover in its summary, or posted them in one of the generic crossover categories in the Misc. section (such as X-overs, or Cartoons X-overs). There wasn’t a filter to screen all crossovers of specific fandoms back then.
Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
Interestingly enough, the crossover sections don’t seem to be suffering from a total fanfiction discrepancy, unlike the sections for non-crossover fanfiction.

[2023] TOP 20 PODCASTS ON AO3 FOUND IN FANDOMS > OTHER MEDIA

To make this ranking, all series titles in Other Media were copy-pasted to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then manually filtered since not all podcasts were marked as such.
The numbers under each rank indicate how much they rose/fell in the rankings based on last year's (Oct. 24, 2023) rankings, which can be found here. The gray numbers in parenthesis indicate how much fanworks it gained since last year.
The data for this year and last year's rankings were taken while logged in, so lcoked fanworks are included in the count.
A few web series like Critical Role and Dimensions 20 released audio-only versions of their works too, but I left them out since they were listed was a web series on ao3 and more known as one too.
Cabin Pressure has also been left off the list this time since its podcast format was only released in 2019, years after it aired on the radio.
All nonfiction podcasts have also been excluded (Not that there were many), because with RPFs, it’s hard to tell if the fic in question is just based on the podcast or because of the things the person has done outside of it. Last year, I accidentally included The Misfits in the list since I didn't realize from its description that it was nonfiction.
The Two Princes (Podcast) ranks 21st in the rankings this year, and actually ranked 20th last year when the rankings are adjusted to exclude Cabin Pressure and The Misfits.
The College Tapes is actually a spinoff of The Bright Sessions.

TOP 10 FANDOMS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (2002-2022)

To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the each Section on the same date nearest or on November 29 of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
FFN used to allow Real Person Fics up until October 12th, 2002, which is why NSYNC immediately plummets off the chart at the start of the video.
The Books, TV and Play sections did not have an archived page on January 13, 2013, so I used the January 12 data.
The Play section also did not have an archived page on October 27, 2010, so I used the October 26 data.
The Games, Music & Misc. sections did not have an archived page on June 1, so I used their June 2 data.
In 2000-2001, I couldn't find a date that had all the sections archived, so the bar charts starts at 2002.
By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the each section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these categories when I go to the specific categories' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)

Jossverse was in the top 5 from 2010-2011 (2nd place in 2010 and 3rd in 2011). A lot of fandoms in its subtags contributed to these numbers, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel: the Series, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Firefly, Serenity (2005) and Dollhouse. In 2018, it was removed from the TV Show fandom list and lost its subtags. Works tagged with it show up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) instead, so I’ve excluded it from the bar chart.
Marvel (Movies) was used in the Movies category in 2011-2016 and ranked in the top 5 from 2011-2016. lot of fandoms in its subtags contributed to these numbers, such as the MCU movies and the X-men movies. In 2017, it was removed from the Movies fandom list and lost its subtags. Works tagged with it showed up in Marvel instead, so Marvel (Movies) was left out of the bar chart. Its data in 2012 was used for Marvel in this bar chart since its numbers were higher than Marvel in that year.

I checked my Excel file for the TV Shows & Movies categories, and the Star Trek tag didn't exist back in 2009 (At least not on Dec. 3-21 anyway). All the Star Trek fandom tags back then only had separate fandom tags (such as Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek (2009)).

If you add up all those fanworks, perhaps the Star Trek tag could've made it in the top 5. Unfortunately, I can't just add up all of the Star Trek tags, since some of them are could be fanworks that listed more than one Star Trek tag.

For reference though, when I add up the Star Trek tags in the TV Shows & Movies categories in 2009, the result is 829 fanworks. (Didn't check if there were Star Trek tags in other categories too though, haha)

Hi! I'm not sure. I can only presume it might be because Music & Bands is already a enough category on its own that anything under it is already understood as RPF.

#perhaps its also to avoid being redundant since theres a separate category for celebrities and people #and thats usually where they specify [fandom] rpf #there might be an official explanation somewhere but i havent googled haha #actually on second thought #i think i recall some genres of music having rpf tacked on at the end of their fandom tag #so perhaps its just inconsistent tagging format?

To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Celebrities & Real People Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered for fandoms belonging in only one category, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.
Japanese Actor RPF was reduced to 9.66% of its total fanworks by 2015 because Johnny's Entertainment was removed from its subtags.
British Actor RPF was reduced to around 70% of its total fanworks by 2017 because RPF of various media was removed from its subtags.
Fandom tags that are no longer in the Celebrities & Real People category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as CW Network RPF which later on merged with Actor RPF, I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year.

In 2009-2012, American Idol RPF was only in the Music & Bands category. By 2013, it was categorized to Celebrities & Real People and TV Shows instead. Since its 2009-2012 were high enough to rank in the top 10 in this category, I've decided to show it here in the bar chart.
After American Idol RPF changed categories, it seems to have lost half its fanworks. There aren't much archives of the American Idol RPF page, but I believe it was because the tags of singers who participated in this show were removed from its subtags.
Japanese Actor RPF was reduced to 9.66% of its total fanworks by 2015 because Johnny's Entertainment was removed from its subtags.
British Actor RPF was reduced to around 70% of its total fanworks by 2017 because RPF of various media was removed from its subtags.
Music RPF was not in the Celebrities & Real People category in 2015-2018.
Minecraft (Video Game) was in the top 10 in 2021-2022. However, it has been removed from the Celebrities & Real People category by the time this post was made, so I'm excluding it from the bar chart.
Fandom tags that are no longer in the Celebrities & Real People category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.
