one of my personal favorite dichotomies in atla is how iroh, once the top strategist and highest-ranking general of the fire nation, now directs all his energy and considerable tactical experience towards attempting to keep his teenage nephew from throwing himself into life-threatening situations AND IROH REGULARLY FAILS TO PREVENT HIM FROM DOING SO.

he lead a six-hundred day siege and now iroh can't keep up with a sixteen-year-old armed with two swords and a passionate deathwish. zuko's motto is "act first, think never" and he's running rings around his uncle. it's like!!! who's gonna come out on top, iroh's west point education vs. zuko's deep and abiding commitment to always choosing the stupidest possible course of action, and zuko manages to win every single time

the way sokka looks like his mom but tries so hard to be his dad and the way katara looks like her dad and tries so hard to be her mom is. ouch

it’s like. sokka says he doesn’t know what his mother looks like but throws himself in front of katara time and time again. he comes up with plans and tries to lead armies but inspires and loves and guides five kids without parents instead. he’s creative and funny and goofy and so so so full of love. and katara says that she’s been doing all the work around camp since mom died but all she wants is to learn how to fight. she’s angry at her dad for abandoning her but stands in front of a group of hopeless earthbenders and attempts to rally them with a speech. she tries and tries to be soft but ends up blowing up a factory to save the enemy. sokka wants to be his father but carries his mother’s heart. katara feels like she has to be her mother but has her father’s fight.

This, this right here is the perfect and most accurate character analysis of the Water tribe siblings I have EVER read. 10/10 say it louder. I want to explore this more tell me more write a fucking dissertation on it and I will read the ENTIRE thing! I’m going to pin this, I’m gonna tattoo this on my arm.

Well damn if that didn’t hit me right in the feelings.

Every atla AU is like "aang was found later" or "aang was found earlier" or "aang died and someone else became the next avatar" or "aang never got encased in ice and died 100yrs later and yue became the next avatar" but what about an AU where Aang never got found at all and remained encased in ice forever?

The world would have to accept that the avatar will never be reborn. No one knows what happened to the cycle. Even spiritual experts are absolutely baffled bc by all measures, the cycle shouldn't have stopped at all. People assume the young airbender would have been killed during the fire nation raids, while in the avatar state. But there would have been reports of that. People couldn't have missed a glowing kid? And if the cycle is supposedly gone, why do we still feel Raava's presence?

All contact with the spirit world eventually ceased. Even spiritual elders like Iroh eventually aren't able to meditate into the spirit world anymore. The Fire Nation's drill plan would have succeeded. They would have conquered the Earth Kingdom fully. The only true free nation remaining would be the Northern Watertribe, who remain in their ice fortress locked away from the rest of the world forever. Airbenders remain extinct.

Zuko gives up on his search for the Avatar after 4 years. At this point the 17yr old realizes he was sent on a fool's errand. It was his father's intention for him to never return. Him and Iroh abandon the ship, and make it to Ba Sing Se, where they settle and become Earth Kingdom citizens. Sokka and Katara leave the Southern tribe around the same time, in search of Hakoda. With Katara's limited waterbending skills they make it to Whale Tale island and catch a boat from there. Then they travel the Earth Kingdom with the limited information they have to find their dad. Toph eventually runs away from home to go to Earth Rumble competitions all over the Earth Kingdom. Her goal is to become the world champion. Suki's ambition to help refugees and fight in the war would cause her to take a troop of Kyoshi warriors and leave Kyoshi Island.

These people were destined to meet, with or without Aang. Their paths would cross one way or the other. A banished prince, the son and daughter of the Southern Watertribe chief, the leader of the Kyoshi warriors, and the only heir to the Bei Fong estate, they would make a team and devise a plan to stop the war. But they would always feel like something is missing. And that something is beneath the ice, in a deep eternal slumber. Would they even succeed?

Aang is discovered 400 years later because global warming finally melted him out of the ice

Aang: *Pulls out gun and cocks it* Alright lets fucking do this.

the raw power of imagining Aang holding a gun is too much for me the boy knows he can outdo a gun in power but he’s so mad that he makes the statement with the weapon that killed world leaders

ya know, I really appreciate how ugly the creators of avatar made Zuko in the earlier stories….they Knew fans traditionally drool over cute villains. They saw that shit coming and decided no, you’re all gonna WAIT until his fucking character arc hits. he needed to EARN his hotness. evil glorifying horny demons were denied access to the show. I respect that
