I’m convinced the ones who latch onto the “he wouldn’t go so far as to call Gwyn a friend, but...” quote don’t actually read books.

“I don’t like them, but...” and then they do end up liking them

“We hate each other, but...” and then they end up liking each other, ~~or even falling in love~~

It’s a really common trope, usually used for foreshadowing. That’s why I absolutely loathe the “lacking reading comprehension” argument. You sound like you’ve never even picked up a book when you say it, worry about that.
