it is really fucking funny how cheerful caspar is around ted. two most miserable freaks in the universe meet and it fills one with joy and the other with rage.
midnight burger is really the Most Show Ever because you get quotes like "self-completion is a constantly moving target" in the same episode as "smart hulk would have stomped the fuck out of john wilkes boothe!!" "this is going nowhere, just drink your orange julius"
Midnight burger? I hardly know h[I am frozen in chemical ice by the Teds]
I love listening to podcasts you can tell were written in the middle of lockdown. like stories about isolation and loneliness and finding community wherever you can, or being trapped and cut off from the outside world and having to adjust to something no one has any experience with. the new normal etc etc. there's something about listening to them in 2024 man it all felt like such a fever dream it's like finding relics of a lost age
I will say, one thing I absolutely love about Midnight Burger is that the science fiction makes sense.
Yes, there's things that are left unexplained for wacky reasons, and yes, it's science fiction for a reason. But there's usually an explanation for whatever weird thing that Midnight Burger comes into contact with or creates, and they tend to actually make logical sense. Ava's almost always got a cool obscure physics theory to apply to the situation, Leif's almost always got an encyclopedic knowledge of advanced tech and the spacing life, and between the two of them, they provide so much worldbuilding and immersion through infodumps that feel natural. Because, well, they're smart people who ramble about the things they're smart about! They know exactly how to look at something insane and ground it in reality!
And usually, any sci-fi that has all this detailed explanation for how things work is one of those gritty, hard sci-fi stories that are devoid of the whimsy that this genre should have, but that's not the case with Midnight Burger! It's fun! It's colorful! It's retro! It's madcap! It's got crazy situations and vibrant locations and dynamic characters who bounce off of each other perfectly!
Science fiction can be rooted in real science and still be fun! And this podcast perfectly encapsulates that!
I’m impressed with the ability of Midnight Burger actors to make “okay” convey the entire spectrum of human emotion
I listened to the first season finale of Midnight Burger again (Chapter 10) and simply HAD to illustrate a fake film still of Ava and Leiflet as they experience the “Big, Malevolent Thing”.
They were very sweet and asked to make it the cover for the episode, so that was amazing! Thank you to the Midnight Burger team for making something truly amazing. I cannot recommend it enough!
Closeup under the cut!
The podcast fandom is so weird like wdym this incredible story with intricate characters and beautiful world building and long in depth episodes has like 280 listeners??? Wtf
well god forbid a woman does anything 🙄 (she is damaging the fabric of space and time)
