Project 2025 ain't gonna roll out all at once. So what we're gonna wanna do is make passing each individual part of it as difficult as possible, so there's less to undo once we finally get this country back on the rails.

Resist every step and do not get distracted by stupid bullshit. Distracting people with stupid bullshit is one of Trump's favorite political techniques. We saw it all over the place in the first term.

Trump will say something like "You know the Hispanics actually punch kittens, it's what they do."

And the news will be like "TRUMP SAID HISPANIC PEOPLE PUNCH KITTENS" for three weeks.

And while they're doing that the Republicans in Congress have quietly deleted healthcare.

Do not get distracted by stupid bullshit. Trump is a dancing monkey whose greatest asset is the ability to yank the spotlight off of everyone else. Keep your eyes on Congress.

and keep your eyes on your state government as well, because even if they PASS project 2025 bullshit it may not have actually come with MONEY to implement it. So they're just gonna be "ah yes, we'll enact this Unfundeed Mandate and make the states deal with it!"

make sure the state comes back and says "yes, and where's my money for that. We already passed this year's budget and there's no money for that."

even if the fed does cough up the money for it, it still takes time to do so and disperse the money. Which just means its that much longer before anything gets implemented.

Repeat at local level for further delay. Gee sorry, you didn't give us any money to hire people to do this. Gonna have to wait til next budget cycle.

also in local elections in town where you CAN vote on the budget, keep an eye out for the meeting where the board of finance proposes a budget. BEFORE it goes to a vote. That's when it can still be edited. Oh hey, what's this money for? oh we can't afford that. Motion to remove that from budget. Oops, darn, sorry, fascism will have to wait til next year! It would be fiscally irresponsible to spend that money when SURELY the state or fed will be along shortly with grant money :) :) :)

What Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did in 2024.

I started this project back in January and for most of a year, every week, I came up with the highlights of what the Biden-Harris Administration did. I did it because it felt to me our media and national conversion was broken, our government was doing huge things that it felt like almost no one knew about. It's amazing how often I struggled to find a single news source that wanted to cover a huge life changing project.

This is the last Friday before Election Day, and if you haven't already voted, take a minute to go back and look at the last 40 weeks, and decide, do you like these things or want literally the reverse on every issue.

Feel free to reblog this or go back and reblog a favorite, one that impacts your life or the one from the week of your birthday, whatever.

and remember to read past the headlines and dig to find out what your government is up to, it might shock you how much is happening that no one talks about.

Hey a reminder to all salaried employees in the US that as of today, July 1st, you need to be making at least 43,888 per year or else your employer needs to pay you overtime at a rate of 1.5 per hour over 40 worked, as you are now non-FLSA exempt. On January 1st 2025 this number will increase to 58,655 per year. Don’t let your employer cheat you.

If you are a US citizen and you're registering to vote or checking your voting status online, make sure that you're only using OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT SITES. That means either a federal site like vote.gov or state government sites.

A registration status check should NEVER ask for things like your gender, race, ethnicity, job, marital status, party, etc. If it does, leave that site and use a government site.

There are legitimate organizations that help people register to vote, but there's also a flood phishing scams to collect information (especially about Democrats and third party party voters) and prevent people from registering using false forms. Don't trust random emails you get and stick to the trusted sites.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) announced an initiative yesterday proposing major changes to various State Parks throughout Florida.
Today, with only one week's notice, FDEP announced public meetings throughout the state scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27th. The meetings will consist of a presentation and an opportunity for public comment, but with only an hour allotted, they do not appear to include a question-and-answer period.
To voice your concerns about these proposals and the lack of public participation, send your customizable email to the Governor, the Secretary of FDEP, and your state representatives. Adding your connection to Florida's State Parks in the email can help them understand how important this issue is to you, their constituent.

if you are able to make it to one of these, i strongly recommend you do. otherwise please send a message. we dont need fucking golf and pickleball in our already threatened natural areas

Here is a link to the National Audobon Society post on the issue, which in turn links to their letter writing campaign. Please take the time to send one.

If you're not from Florida, your voice probably still matters a lot, since tourism is king

“fun fact: as a DV survivor i cannot register to vote because doing so makes my address public. anyone who is fleeing or hiding from an abuser is automatically disenfranchised from the political process and this is a feature, not a bug”]

I don’t know of the original poster might not be aware

but!

if you’ve been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, you can enroll into the address confidentiality program (free of cost!) and be registered to vote as an absentee voter and your name and address will not be made available for the public

it is super easy to get enrolled - the application takes like 5 minutes, but it has to be with someone who is certified to do it (most likely an advocate! try going to a family justice center in your area or calling the Attorney Generals office in your area!!!!)

ALSO :

you don’t need to have any police reports or have a protection order to qualify!!! you just have to sign stating that you’ve been a victim of one of the aforementioned crimes.

The RNC Convention just blew their wad attacking Biden, literally last week. Millions of dollars in attack ads & airtime.. gone. Puff of smoke.

And now they have to switch gears and they can't. They have no idea how to talk about Kamala Harris aside from "DEI President" which only resonates with MAGA types. Independents don't buy that shit.

What, are they gonna resurrect the 2020 "Kamala is not a US citizen" memes that failed so spectacularly the first time? Good luck.

In one move the DNC destroyed all their talking points.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #27

July 12-19 2024

  1. President Biden announced the cancellation of $1.2 billion dollars worth of student loan debt. This will cancel the debt of 35,000 public service workers, such as teachers, nurses, and firefighters. This brings the total number of people who've had their student debt relived under the Biden Administration to 4.8 million or one out of every ten people with student loan debt, for a total of $168.5 billion in debt forgiven. This came after the Supreme Court threw out an earlier more wide ranging student debt relief plan forcing the administration to undertake a slower more piecemeal process for forgiving debt. President Biden announced a new plan in the spring that will hopefully be finalized by fall that will forgive an additional 30 million people's student loan debt.
  2. President Biden announced actions to lower housing coasts, make more housing available and called on Congress to prevent rent hikes. President Biden's plan calls for landlords who raise the rent by more than 5% a year to face losing major important tax befits, the average rent has gone up by 21% since 2021. The President has also instructed the federal government, the largest land owner in the country, to examine how unused property can be used for housing. The Bureau of Land Management plans on building 15,000 affordable housing units on public land in southern Nevada, the USPS is examining 8,500 unused properties across America to be repurposed for housing, HHS is finalizing a new rule to make it easier to use federal property to house the homeless, and the Administration is calling on state, local, and tribal governments to use their own unused property for housing, which could create approximately 1.9 million units nationwide.
  3. The Department of Transportation announced $5 billion to replace or restore major bridges across the country. The money will go to 13 significant bridges in 16 states. Some bridges are suffering from years of neglect others are nearly 100 years old and no longer fit for modern demands. Some of the projects include the I-5 bridge over the Columbia River which connects Portland Oregon to Vancouver Washington, replacing the Sagamore Bridge which connects Cape Cod to the mainland built in 1933, replacing the I- 83 South Bridge in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Replacement Project in Wilmington, North Carolina, among others.
  4. President Biden signed an Executive Order aimed at boosting Latino college attendance. The order established the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are defined as colleges with 25% or above Hispanic/Latino enrollment, currently 55% of Hispanic college students are enrolled in an HSI. The initiative seeks to stream line the relationship between the federal government and HSIs to allow them to more easily take advantage of federal programs and expand their reach to better serve students and boost Hispanic enrollment nationwide.
  5. HUD announced $325 million in grants for housing and community development in 7 cities. the cities in Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Nevada, New York and New Jersey, have collectively pledged to develop over 6,500 new mixed-income units, including the one-for-one replacement of 2,677 severely distressed public housing units. The 7 collectively will invest $2.65 billion in additional resources within the Choice Neighborhood area – so that every $1 in HUD funds will generate $8.65 in additional resources.
  6. President Biden took extensive new actions on immigration. On June 18th The President announced a new policy that would allow the foreign born spouses and step children of American citizens who don't have legal status to apply for it without having to leave the country, this would effect about half a million spouses and 50,000 children. This week Biden announced that people can start applying on August 19, 2024. Also in June President Biden announced an easing of Visa rules that will allow Dreamers, Americans brought to the country as children without legal status, to finally get work visas to give them legal status and a path way to citizenship. This week the Biden Administration announced a new rule to expand the federal TRIO program to cover Dreamers. TRIO is a program that aims to support low income students and those who would be the first in their families to go to college transition from high school to college, the change would support 50,000 more students each year. The Administration also plans to double the number of free immigration lawyers available to those going through immigration court.
  7. The EPA announced $160 million in grants to support Clean U.S. Manufacturing of Steel and Other Construction Materials. The EPA estimates that the manufacturing of construction materials, such as concrete, asphalt, steel, and glass, accounts for 15% of the  annual global greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA is supporting 38 projects aimed at measuring and combatting the environmental impact of construction materials.
  8. The US announced $203 million in humanitarian assistance for the people of Sudan. Sudan's out of control civil war has caused the largest refugee crisis in the world with 11 million Sudanese having fled their homes in the face of violence. The war is also causing the gravest food crisis in the world, with a record setting 25 million people facing acute food insecurity, and fears that nearly a million will face famine in the next months. This aid brings the total aid the US has given Sudan since September 2023 to $1.6 billion, making America the single largest donor to Sudan.
  9. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau put forward a new rule that would better regulate popular paycheck advance products. 2/3rds of workers are payed every two weeks or once a month and since 2020 the number of short term loans that allow employees to receive their paycheck days before it’s scheduled to hit their account has grown by 90%. the CFPB says that many of these programs are decided with employers not employees and millions of Americans are paying fees they didn't know about before signing up. The new rule would require lenders to tell costumers up front about any and all fees and charges, as well as cracking down on deceptive "tipping" options.

The list of things that Biden's team has accomplished is impressive. I went ahead and made a bullet list of the things that affect me/my loved ones personally:

  • Over the counter birth control now available. This is especially important to people in states like mine where abortion is entirely inaccessible. Opill can be ordered online with no doctor visit and is currently available at $50 for 3 months worth, which is not bad. Could help a lot of people! (they're also trying to make it so your insurance would have to cover this)
  • Established the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which is one of the first major steps towards gun control we've seen in a long time. Also awarded one billion dollars to support student wellness and school mental health professionals (which is the field I work in)
  • Helped broker a deal to save the Colorado river. There's something simply existential about a water crisis, and I have a lot of family living in the affected area, so it's nice to get some progress on this.
  • Invested millions of federal funds into cancer research, with the goal to halve death rates over the next 25 years. I unfortunately know several people who have/have had cancer, and it could happen to anyone, so it's always nice to see progress made in this area.
  • Made it harder for companies to engage in union busting. This doesn't directly affect me yet as I'm not currently in a union, but I sure hope to be someday!
  • The infrastructure deal is pouring 1.2 trillion dollars of investment into roads, bridges, airports, waterlines and broadband networks. Hey, I use those things!
  • Making airlines pay up when flights are delayed or cancelled. I've lived through the tragedy of a cancelled an non refunded flight, and hopefully I'll never have to do it again.

OMG the Department of Labor just this morning issued a new rule about how to classify contractors vs employees... uber and lyft are gonna get WRECKED

A summary of the new test (it's so new I haven't yet found good summary news articles)

1. Do you have control over how much money you make, not including taking more jobs/hours? (Ex: being able to charge a higher rate for your work) If not, you're an employee!

2. Can you make investments to grow your business, not merely maintain it? (Ex: a photographer buying a new camera) If not, you're an employee!

3. Is the work indefinite or continuous, i.e. not a specific time based engagement? You're an employee!

4. If someone else has control over your work - sets your schedule, dictates your prices, supervises your work (including through electronic tracking), is able to discipline you - you're an employee!

5. Is the work you do an integral part of your employer's business? You're an employee!

.....UH. This is going.... to be interesting as a postdoc--I'm currently classified as a federal contractor, which means a whole lot of really stupid fucking things like "I can't get my taxes withdrawn from my paycheck like a normal person". I... under the text of this law, are postdoctoral fellows considered employees now?

This would make things so much simpler if I could apply it to my work, not gonna lie...

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #13

April 5-12 2024

  1. President Biden announced the cancellation of a student loan debt for a further 277,000 Americans. This brings the number of a Americans who had their debt canceled by the Biden administration through different means since the Supreme Court struck down Biden's first place in 2023 to 4.3 million and a total of $153 billion of debt canceled so far. Most of these borrowers were a part of the President's SAVE Plan, a debt repayment program with 8 million enrollees, over 4 million of whom don't have to make monthly repayments and are still on the path to debt forgiveness.
  2. President Biden announced a plan that would cancel student loan debt for 4 million borrowers and bring debt relief to 30 million Americans The plan takes steps like making automatic debt forgiveness through the public service forgiveness so qualified borrowers who don't know to apply will have their debts forgiven. The plan will wipe out the interest on the debt of 23 million Americans. President Biden touted how the plan will help black and Latino borrowers the most who carry the heavily debt burdens. The plan is expected to go into effect this fall ahead of the election.
  3. President Biden and Vice-President Harris announced the closing of the so-called gun show loophole. For years people selling guns outside of traditional stores, such as at gun shows and in the 21st century over the internet have not been required to preform a background check to see if buyers are legally allowed to own a fire arm. Now all sellers of guns, even over the internet, are required to be licensed and preform a background check. This is the largest single expansion of the background check system since its creation.
  4. The EPA published the first ever regulations on PFAS, known as forever chemicals, in drinking water. The new rules would reduce PFAS exposure for 100 million people according to the EPA. The Biden Administration announced along side the EPA regulations it would make available $1 billion dollars for state and local water treatment to help test for and filter out PFAS in line with the new rule. This marks the first time since 1996 that the EPA has passed a drinking water rule for new contaminants.
  5. The Department of Commerce announced a deal with microchip giant TSMC to bring billions in investment and manufacturing to Arizona. The US makes only about 10% of the world's microchips and none of the most advanced chips. Under the CHIPS and Science Act the Biden Administration hopes to expand America's high-tech manufacturing so that 20% of advanced chips are made in America. TSMC makes about 90% of the world's advanced chips. The deal which sees a $6.6 billion dollar grant from the US government in exchange for $65 billion worth of investment by TSMC in 3 high tech manufacturing facilities in Arizona, the first of which will open next year. This represents the single largest foreign investment in Arizona's history and will bring thousands of new jobs to the state and boost America's microchip manufacturing.
  6. The EPA finalized rules strengthening clean air standards around chemical plants. The new rule will lower the risk of cancer in communities near chemical plants by 96% and eliminate 6,200 tons of toxic air pollution each year. The rules target two dangerous cancer causing chemicals, ethylene oxide and chloroprene, the rule will reduce emissions of these chemicals by 80%.
  7. the Department of the Interior announced it had beaten the Biden Administration goals when it comes to new clean energy projects. The Department has now permitted more than 25 gigawatts of clean energy projects on public lands, surpass the Administrations goal for 2025 already. These solar, wind, and hydro projects will power 12 million American homes with totally green power. Currently 10 gigawatts of clean energy are currently being generated on public lands, powering more than 5 million homes across the West.
  8. The Department of Transportation announced $830 million to support local communities in becoming more climate resilient. The money will go to 80 projects across 37 states, DC, and the US Virgin Islands The projects will help local Infrastructure better stand up to extreme weather causes by climate change.
  9. The Senate confirmed Susan Bazis, Robert White, and Ann Marie McIff Allen to lifetime federal judgeships in Nebraska, Michigan, and Utah respectively. This brings the total number of judges appointed by President Biden to 193

Hell yeah the US just gave like 8 billion dollars in funding to intercity passenger rail. Including some HIGH SPEED RAIL?!?!?!??

can't overstate how massive this is, i used to work in rail and US trains were so pitifully underfunded that my employer wouldn't even bid on those projects because it wasn't worth the time. This is actually putting us on the level of other countries that invest in transportation as a public service??? And 8 billion? Like this could actually really make some massive change.

Sen. Troy Heinert’s bill to rescind Medals of Honor given to U.S. soldiers for involvement in the Dec. 29 Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 received unanimous, 35-0, approval from fellow state legislators 130 years later in a Feb. 22 state Senate vote.

“The pain from that day is still relevant for many families,” Heinert told the Native Sun News Today. “Without addressing the Medals of Honor, that wound remains open.” […]

I made a meme for today

[ID: three frames from the movie The Princess Bride with edited subtitles.

The first frame shows Inigo and Westley by an open window. The subtitle has Inigo say “You know, it’s very strange. I have been in the Remove Trump business for so long, now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with the rest of my life.” to Westley.

The second frame shows a close up of Westley’s face, who has been subtitled to say “Have you ever considered dismantling White Supremacy?”

The third frame shows a close up of Inigo’s face with a considering expression on it.
