Today Isn't Any Other Day

@awitcheveryotherday / awitcheveryotherday.tumblr.com

Hey - name's Gail. And, yeah, I'm a witch - got the schooling for it, at any rate. I'm not a big fan of the Wizarding World these days. Trust me - the feeling's mutual. So I stay in my bookshop & keep to myself & they leave me alone...if I'm lucky. ((Indi HP OC Multiverse blog. Both muse & mun are 21+, FC is Janeane Garofalo))

I would argue that the people duking it out over valedictorian are actually most likely to be Slytherin. Ravenclaw’s hat is wisdom and intelligence, and i feel that at large most probably are less stressed about their grades than other houses because they know that school is transient and what matters is not appearing smarter than their peers but getting a good education. You can break down each house to its essence based on what motivates them: power for Slytherin, principals for Gryffindor, friendship for Hufflepuff, and knowledge for Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw is flawed in that while every other house is interested in an outside concept, Ravenclaw’s focus is internal, and the outside world is secondary. As a result, Ravenclaw is the disorganized house of nonconformists, and are probably the most distant from each other. They dont really go in for the power game, principals while fine and good doesnt really offer much, and a tightly woven large circle of friends probably doesn’t suit most Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw is aloof and distant, and (to paraphrase the Dumbledore quote about the mirror of erised) the most likely to dwell on dreams and forget to live.

(( *nods*  I definitely see where you’re coming from.  Non-conformity and eccentric genius are excellent ways to label a lot of Ravenclaws.  I suppose I was looking at things from a more ‘juvenile’ perspective, and (like was done with the other three houses) I considered and focused on a possible singular negative trait that many juvenile Ravenclaws might be likely to have.

Ravenclaw children/teens (to me) are probably still working on the ‘wisdom’ aspect of their house’s banner.  They’re kids, after all - and school often feels like the end-all and be-all of the universe for most young people.  Granted, Luna always seemed to have a good deal of wisdom to share - but she was the ‘odd man out’ even in her own house.  It’s easy to see Ravenclaws as aloof and distant (hence the reason I suggested they probably don’t do much to help each other out.)  Ravenclaw is a house of loners, in a  lot of ways.  However, even Pottermore acknowledges that “Ravenclaws are famous for clambering over each other to get good marks...” and “ Ravenclaws, in particular, assume that any outstanding achiever must have come from their house...” and the Ravenclaw prefect himself admits to caring about who is and isn’t competition at exam time.  Granted, not everyone views Pottermore as canon, but there you have it.  ^_^

Anyway, I think we all know by this point that all the houses possess multiple traits, whether good or bad, from multiple houses.  In your original post it appeared to me that you were intentionally over-generalizing for the sake of humor, so that’s what I did in my reply.  I chose a negative aspect of Ravenclaw and over-generalized. ^_^  I could do the same thing with say...drug culture at Hogwarts, for example.  Slytherins would be the house to go to for anything designer, Hufflepuffs would control the mood-enhancers, Gryffindors would deal strictly with performance-enhances, and Ravenclaws would have the market on cognitive-enhancers.  *chuckles*

Either way, thank you for the thought-out reply, and for taking the time to listen to me ramble.  ^_^;  I appreciate it. ))

The Slytherin common room is located down in the depths of Hogwarts and reaches as far out as the lake. It’s darkly light with a greenish tint and while it may not be the warmest place, it is suppose to be one of the most relaxing rooms thanks to the sound of the water surrounding them. The entrance is through the dungeons and requires a password that is changed fortnightly and then pinned to the noticeboard inside. Upon entering you will notice the vast windows that offer a unique underwater view. The giant squid is amongst the many weird and wonder creatures said to frequently swim past. The rest of the room is appropriately decorated with skulls, leather sofas, dark wooden furniture and grand tapestries that cover the walls celebrating famous Slytherins throughout history.
