I keep mulling over s4e3 and the revelation that Zarkon never trained Lotor because it creates this obvious schism of, well someone clearly did. Someone taught this kid how to fight, and well.
Lotor emphasizes that Dayak was his governess, not his nanny. While these words are sometimes synonymous, they mean slightly different things, generally- a nanny’s job is usually to tend to the needs of a very young child, while a governess is often more specifically an educator, and given care of a slightly older child. Dayak’s design and mannerisms also pretty clearly evoke an old-fashioned schoolteacher, down to the switch that she carries.
Lotor heavily implies that his instruction in galra culture came from Dayak when he recommends her as a teacher to Hunk, but as we see from Hunk’s session with her, Dayak’s training also heavily focuses on the physical.
The other interesting angle to this is that Dayak and Lotor have very similar fighting styles, if you look at how Dayak uses that switch. She uses a medium-length one-handed weapon, keeping her body very precisely controlled, targets different areas of the body very quickly and has a pretty impressive arm to back up her speed.
Given the glimpse of galra culture Dayak gives us (and just about everything else about them we’ve seen) is very martial, it’s entirely possible that combat would have merely been considered an ordinary piece of Lotor’s education, but given that it was the site of some contention between Lotor and Zarkon- that Zarkon never taught Lotor personally, when that’s an honor he dispensed to Sendak- I have to wonder.
After all, as I’ve pointed out before, while Dayak hasn’t spoken of Zarkon directly onscreen, she seems to think rather poorly at him given how she congratulates Lotor for destroying his enemies- when, with Sendak at large, the primary enemy Lotor destroyed was Zarkon.
It’s especially interesting given Lotor’s favored weapon is clearly an Altean broadsword, which has a straight blade compared to the curved slashing edges of galra weaponry. I wonder how long he’s had that, and if Dayak helped procure it for him.
So the important details here are:
1. Dayak was most likely the person who taught Lotor how to swordfight. She may have supported his interest in Altean culture as she did so.
2. Given Lotor’s level of skill and the speed and agility with which Dayak uses that switch, this would imply that she is a swordswoman of devastating caliber herself, and in fact could probably kill a man in single combat in an honor duel, even if she was almost definitely fucking with Hunk about challenging him over running off to save the universe.
She probably has actually killed someone in an honor duel at least once.
why does wiggly sword exist? What are they good for?
Skill: Shows off the blacksmiths massive horse cock. In a time before modern machinery some crazy Germans and Swiss hammered beyond natural human limit. They probably did it as a meme then realised it was actually useful as a weapon. Sharpening a wavy blade would have been a nightmare.
Functional: Good for duelling sword vs sword. A traditional sword allows you to slide off an enemies blade if your swords clash, because the blade is straight. The waves in a flamberg blade creates vibrations which hurts the opponents hands, that doesn’t sound like much but it gives you an advantage. Very useful for parrying since the enemies sword will strike, then the blade gets stuck on your wavy blade or they pull away from the impact shock. Either way you will have an opening to attack. Also the waves cut much deeper similar to a serrated knife. If you got cut once by this blade, you would not be able to stitch your wound shut, you are pretty much sliced bread.Aesthetic: Someone challenges you to a duel, while they unsheathe their boring longsword, you unwrap your wiggly sword. They immediately apologize and run because you are rich enough to afford a wiggly sword and probably have multiple wenches giving you ankle parchments.
Oh my god, these world class fencers are having a LIGHTSABER DUEL.

Resource: How to Use a Weapon
Violence, fights, tension–three words that often carry a story a long, especially anything in the fantasy, sci-fi, or action-adventure realm. Whether it’s hand-to-hand combat (see older resource posts), or weapon usage, fights should be as realistic as possible: the focus should be on the fiction, the characters, and story, not your reader scratching their head saying “that could never really happen.” Here are some resources I hope will help as you embark on your more “weapon-based” scenes:

Remember, not all your characters will be experts, but if they are, the technical usage is important. If your character is a novice, not all of these resources will be helpful to you, but it’s important to note what works and what doesn’t in these scenarios.
