I don't know if this was obvious to everyone else, but I just realised that one of the reasons why the Hobbit is so effective as a children's book is that while Bilbo is an adult, the skills that make him a hero are all those of a child.

By human standards he's child-sized, which makes him unobtrusive and light on his feet. He can slip by unnoticed where bigger people can't.

He's good at playing games, and even cheats (successfully!) in a way that - let's face it - is not so different to how children try to cheat at games. He's polite in a way that's fully comprehensible to children (rather than, say, being able to perform courtly manners). He's quick-witted, but the trick of keeping the trolls talking is also one that would be achievable for a child.

He doesn't have magic powers, he's not a great fighter, and he's not some kind of Chosen One. There's not much that he does that couldn't be done by a ten-year-old, but the story shows just how valuable all those skills and traits are. It's very empowering.

Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere.’
'Very well, very well, Master Elrond!’ said Bilbo suddenly. 'Say no more! It is plain enough what you are pointing at. Bilbo the silly hobbit started this affair, and Bilbo had better finish it, or himself. I was very comfortable here, and getting on with my book. If you want to know, I am just writing an ending for it. I had thought of putting: and he lived happily ever afterwards to the end of his days. It is a good ending, and none the worse for having been used before. Now I shall have to alter that: it does not look like coming true; and anyway there will evidently have to be several more chapters, if I live to write them. It is a frightful nuisance. Boromir looked in surprise at Bilbo, but the laughter died on his lips when he saw that all the others regarded the old hobbit with grave respect. Only Gloin smiled, but his smile came from old memories.
'Of course, my dear Bilbo,’ said Gandalf. 'If you had really started this affair, you might be expected to finish it. But you know well enough now that starting is too great a claim for any, and that only a small part is played in great deeds by any hero. You need not bow! Though the word was meant, and we do not doubt that under jest you are making a valiant offer.’

I just… I love him. This old, old little man (only a few years off from being the oldest hobbit in history) stands up at this council of the Great and the Wise and is the FIRST person there to take on this impossible quest! And he grouches and complains and acts put-upon and deliberately minimizes his own virtue in the very act of volunteering, acting as if it’s the only thing anyone could expect.

(I also love Gandalf’s line taking the time to translate from Bilbo-ese for us, in case there was any doubt that Bilbo was consciously stepping up of his own volition. And Gloin smiling, as he remembers Bilbo grouching his way through saving the dwarves’ necks half-a-dozen times, or going into Smaug’s cave! Beautiful.)

Furthermore, in the next chapter Bilbo says, 'I was afraid all the time that it might come to that [Frodo and Sam being the ones to go], if I was let off.’ So he spoke up at least partly in an attempt to preemptively take the burden from his boy.

I love him.

my favorite scene in the hobbit is when bilbo has to save the dwarves from the spiders and the only thing he can think of to do is to shout very rude things at them to distract them because 1. it shows that bilbo, having been raised in upper-class suburbia, thinks that the spiders will be super offended by his lack of manners enough to chase him 2. it shows that spiders are super offended by his lack of manners and 3. in modern day, it’s the equivalent of shouting ‘FUCKFACE’ at man-eating monsters

It was only then, in the midst of the void which now laid infront of him, that Bilbo let himself surrender to sorrow. He could barely hold a sob before a question arose in his mind, making his gut clench. Had this miserable feeling been caused by the sight of his now empty home, or because he couldn’t call Bag End his home anymore?

82 years ago, The Hobbit was published. I read the book at 17 for the first time and it’s been my favorite book ever since.

Tomorrow (Sep. 22nd) is Bilbo and Frodo Baggins’ birthday (aka the International Hobbit Day), to celebrate this special time of the year, I drew a new picture! 😘🎉
