The Mists of Avalon by Robert Watson
Merlin as The Mists of Avalon
As a child, Morgana is taken to Avalon to become a High Priestess. Eventually, she is given in a fertility rite to a man she later learns is Arthur, her half-brother. Unbeknownst to Arthur, she conceives a child, Mordred. After Uther’s death, Arthur claims his father’s throne and Morgana gives him the magic sword Excalibur. When Guinevere fails to produce a child, she becomes convinced that it is punishment from God for her affair with Lancelet. After the Knights of Camelot leave to search for the Holy Grail, Mordred tries to claim the throne and the ensuing battle causes Avalon and Arthur to be magically removed from the world. It is Morgana alone who lives on to tell the tale of Camelot and await the return of Arthur.

“She switched to the plea she knew could not fail. ‘Don’t leave me, Arthur. Don’t leave me’. He felt her fear. ‘I can’t’- he started to say. ‘Don’t leave me, Arthur. Don’t leave me.’ It was panic now. Morgan in fear. It was something he could not allow. ‘All right. All right. ‘He tried to reassure her. ‘Don’t be afraid’. He gathered his forces, made a tremendous effort, and struggled up through the dark.” [THE ROAD TO AVALON]
