Sam & Dean & Miracle 15x20
I love Sam’s expression when he see the new heaven for the first time…
The Supernatural finale made the previous 15 seasons more meaningful and I can rewatch them knowing there is a beautiful ending for Sam and Dean in their earned eternal peace together. Not many series finale can do that for their fans, for this I am very grateful for this near-perfect SPN finale.
Sam and Dean passed away on their own terms: Dean on a hunt and be the first to go before Sam, and Sam in his bed with his son at his side. They died free, and are eternally free and at peace. This time death was not a punishment, Dean woke up in a beautiful, peaceful Heaven, knowing all his loved ones were there and he could see them anytime. Then Sam honored Dean’s dying wish for him to live a full and happy life and he carry on the on the Winchester legacy.
It’s just so fitting and perfect that Supernatural started with baby Sam assaulted in his crib and his room destroyed in a fire and the Winchesters driven out of the house, to Supernatural ending with old Sam dying peacefully at his house in his bed with his son at his side. I agree with this analysis that had Sam died before experiencing normal life with his own family, his soul wouldn’t be whole and may even make him incompatible with Dean in heaven. It makes me very irrationally happy that Sam and Dean reunite in heaven as their own persons but still very much the halves of one soul.
Our "Carry On" tag is a collection of real time positive reactions, analysis, reviews, fanart, and tribute from close to thousand fans. Read to relive the best feels of the finale!
I so agree. I loved the Finale. I'm so glad it only featured Sam and Dean and none of the side characters. The ending belonged to the brothers alone, as the entire show should have.

What are the threads that are unwoven which this work of untying bears upon? Freud spoke of 'memories' and 'expectations' attaching us to the other. What he doesn't take account of, but which is rarely absent―precisely in the fabric, the context of those memories and expectations―is the place for the message of the other. For the person in mourning, that message has never been adequately understood, never listened to enough. Mourning is hardly ever without the question: what would he be saying now? What would he have said? hardly ever without regret or remorse for not having been able to speak with the other enough, for not having heard what he had to say. Jean Laplanche, Essays On Otherness
Now, it’s perfect 😊
Sam got to be old.
All indications are that he was OK and he was Not OK, which is to say that he was very Sam.
His romantic life was a sketched blur of which many things can be made, but he raised a son who was with him when he died.
He was surrounded by the past but he hung his mementoes on his very own horrendous wallpaper.
When he went to sit and grieve in Dean’s car he sat in the driver’s seat.
He died and ended up – chose to end up – back in the same relationship that supported him and destroyed him all through canon and that he never could really change.
But he picked it up in the memory of one of the two days of his life where it seemed like he might be able to have his own life and chosen future and also be close to Dean and connected to his whole complicated, beloved, ugly family past.
Maybe he went on from there. Maybe he was eternally trapped. Either way he had a whole life behind him.
