I Am All In Rewatch - Episode 3x21

Yeah. I like that scene. I like that scene a lot. I liked it. And he actually carried her over to the other side of the house, not carried her, but he got phys, you know, he actually touched her... But I like that scene. I like that scene a lot. And it showed his, his, you know, him feeling really like a big failure and, and he acknowledged that. And I thought that was a very poignant moment in this...But it was more, it was more..He, he moved her and she didn't mind it. You know, it was like he moved her whole body over around there because he was so concerned that Rory, you know, he is protecting Rory. He didn't want her to hear this...I think there's a big void there without Jess and I'm, you know, I'm wondering what's happening and you know, without Jess there, that really does take away a lot from, from the proceedings. So I was very curious about what was going to unfold and pretty, pretty quickly we get to him getting off the bus. -Scott

August 21st is Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day  💕

Let’s be honest - we all forget to leave a comment sometimes. We don’t always go out of our way to click the “come talk to me on tumblr” link on AO3 to scream about the fic in the author’s inbox. On August 21st I encourage you to take a moment and show fanfic writers that you appreciate them!

How can you do it?

  • leave a comment and kudos on every fic you finish reading. Doesn’t matter how short. Doesn’t matter if you’re just repeating what other people have already said. Just be kind! Keysmashing, Caps Lock, and live commenting appreciated! (Bonus points if you leave a comment on every chapter)
  • ideas for what to put in a comment: one | two | three | four
  • floaty review box for ao3 (super useful for commenting as you read + it has a ‘review tips’ button if you feel stuck)
  • reblog ficlets, drabbles, fics, fic rec posts, etc. Put a nice comment in the tags. Remember that likes, while appreciated, don’t give the writer any exposure, meaning the posts don’t reach more people
  • go to your local fanfic writer’s inbox and talk to them about their fic of your choice. Let them know how long ago you’ve read it and what story point/sentence/scene still makes you smile when you think about it
  • send thank you messages to fic writers. In a world where you have to pay for almost everything, they’re supplying you with countless hours of free entertainment. It can get quite lonely without getting messages acknowledging the hours they spend writing stories - let them know their time and effort is appreciated
  • make fic rec posts and @ the authors whose fics you’re recommending! (believe me, fic writers love to see their stories in these posts)
  • create something inspired by a fic! You can draw fanart, make a moodboard or aesthetic post, or even write a song for the fic you love. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro doesn’t matter - the thought alone is what counts more than anything <3
  • buy the writer a coffee if they have a ko-fi page and you have some change lying around c: Caffeine keeps most fic writers awake when they struggle with a particularly slow draft or a difficult scene. More coffee, more words.

These are only some ideas out of the sea of possible ways to appreciate fanfic writers. On August 21st show the writers in your fandom(s) some love <3

How to write about someone’s appearance? Their physique, styles, face , clothes,?

Avatar
How to Describe a Character's Appearance

Avoid Over-Describing

  • Overloading readers with too much information can be overwhelming and make your characters feel flat and one-dimensional. Focus on the details that are the most important to the story and the characters themselves.
  • If the character's appearance is not central to the story, then you may only need to give a basic description. If it plays a significant role, you may want to go into more detail. Always keep the purpose of your physical descriptions in mind.

Show Don't Tell

  • Don't blatantly state every little thing about your character's appearance, but rather show it through their actions and behaviors.
  • example: If they are tall, show that through their actions. They have to duck to get under a doorway, they help someone reach the top shelf, etc.

Include Personality Traits

  • A character's personality is what makes them memorable. Consider their motivations, values, beliefs, and quirks and give them a well-defined personality.

Avoid Stereotypes

  • Create characters that are more than just their cultural, racial, ethnic, or gender identity. Give them unique interests, hobbies, and personalities. Allow them to have flaws, contradictions, and diverse perspectives.

External Features

  • External features include a character's height, weight, body type, and general appearance. You can describe their skin color, hair color, eye color, and any distinctive features like freckles or scars. This type of description gives the reader a basic understanding of what the character looks like, which is helpful in creating a mental image.

Clothing

  • Describing the type of clothing they wear, including the colors, patterns, and how they fit, can reveal a lot about a character’s personality and social status.
  • For example, a character who wears tailored suits and expensive shoes might be a little snobby and concerned with their image, while a character who wears ripped jeans and t-shirts might be casual and relaxed.

Facial Features

  • Facial features can be used to give the reader a more in-depth understanding of a character's personality and emotions. You can describe their smile, the way they frown, their cheekbones, and their jawline. You can also describe their eyebrows, the shape of their nose, and the size and shape of their eyes, which can give the reader insight into their emotions.

Body Language

  • Body language can be used to give the reader an understanding of a character's emotions and personality without the need for dialogue. Describing the way a character stands, walks, or gestures can reveal a lot about their confidence level, mood, and attitude.
  • For example, a character who slouches and avoids eye contact is likely to be shy, while a character who stands up straight and makes direct eye contact is likely to be confident.
Words to Describe Various Features

Head and face

  • Oval: rounded, elongated, balanced, symmetrical
  • Round: full, plump, chubby, cherubic
  • Square: angular, defined, strong, masculine
  • Heart: pointy, triangular, wider at the temples, narrow at the chin
  • Diamond: angular, pointed, narrow at the forehead and jaw, wide at the cheekbones
  • Long: elongated, narrow, oval, rectangular
  • Triangular: angular, wide at the jaw, narrow at the forehead, inverted heart-shape
  • Oblong: elongated, rectangular, similar to oval but longer
  • Pear-shaped: narrow at the forehead, wide at the jaw and cheekbones, downward-pointing triangle
  • Rectangular: angular, defined, similar to oblong but more squared

Facial features

  • Cheeks: rosy, plump, gaunt, sunken, dimpled, flushed, pale, chubby, hollow
  • Chin: pointed, cleft, rounded, prominent, dimpled, double, weak, strong, square

Anonymous asked:

I know we as the audience can see the devotion and love Merlin and Arthur have for each other, but do you honestly think everyone else knew it to the extent we do like Gwen and the knights? Sure they knew they cared, but merlin and Arthur go beyond just caring.

I absolutely do. In fact, Merlin and Arthur’s mutual devotion and affection for each other is the driving force of A Servant of Two Masters because Morgana uses it as a weapon:

imageimage
imageimage
imageimage

She even says that she won’t kill Merlin because that would be too easy and what exactly is worse than death for Merlin? Having him, of all people, be the one to murder Arthur and what’s more is that she says everything that makes him Merlin will be gone, which means she knows that his devotion to Arthur is a fundamental aspect of who he is as a person

imageimage

On the flipside of that, Gwen sees Arthur become so agitated without Merlin

imageimage

that she chases after him out of palace when he’s on his way to find Merlin again and sees just how indignant he is at even the possibility of not finding him

imageimage
imageimage

Furthermore, she already voiced Merlin’s affection for Arthur before Merlin could even vocalize it

imageimage

Much like how Merlin’s mother vocalizes Arthur’s feelings for Merlin basically responding to Merlin’s constant “it’s not like that” with, bitch, are you dumb?

imageimage
imageimage
imageimage
imageimage

I’ve spoken about the importance of this scene in 3x08 before but to rehash, I find it telling

because Gwaine looks at Arthur indignant and exasperated at his lack of thank you and he looks to Merlin to share in his exasperation but all he sees is that goofy grin on Merlin’s face and, I know the quality is terrible so sorry about that, but Merlin really has this affectionate, soft, warm grin at Arthur even when he’s not being particularly gracious, Gwaine sees that and then smiles to himself because he can see how much Merlin loves Arthur.

Uther consistently tells Arthur that he too intense an attachment to Merlin

imageimage
imageimage
imageimage
imageimage
imageimage
imageimage

to the point, as I also mentioned before, that I actually found this scene really telling

because it’s clearly a personal/intimate moment between Merlin and Arthur? Like if it was just Arthur berating his servant then he wouldn’t feel embarrassed in front of Uther because that’s what princes to do to servants but it was clearly him having fun with Merlin, blurring lines with Merlin so he’s like ………………

The knights absolutely saw these reactions in their 4x02 reunion

Because peripheral vision! And I headcanon that they want to give Arthur the courtesy of pretending not to see just how much he cares for Merlin

and I mean…

I MEAN ….

imageimage

Gaius knows why Merlin is muttering Arthur’s name (or has some idea) but Gwen doesn’t

and speaking of Gaius, he had to have seen throughout the seasons that Merlin saw Arthur as way more than a charge. Next to seeing the emotional toll that Arthur potentially dying had on Merlin

he confided in Gaius just how much Arthur not knowing that he has magic hurt him, not because he wanted credit, but because he wanted his full heart

imageimage

and even when he complains about Arthur only seeing him as an idiot, I believe it’s clear that he wants the respect of a man he himself respects and it hurts him that he sometimes thinks he doesn’t have that respect.

Arthur leaves his men to sit next to Merlin and talk to him

imageimage

I mean, even when everyone talks about how much they complain each other, it’s as if all they do is talk about how much they can’t stand each other and they bicker with each other around the others all the time like a screwball romantic comedy

imageimage
imageimage
imageimage

but then they’re consistently risking their lives for one another and they’re always around each other — there are other servants in the palace and it’s been proven that Arthur can replace Merlin and it’s also been proven that Merlin can leave, neither do.

Plus, the Round Table

The two people next to Arthur are Gwen and Merlin and let’s think about that, let’s think about how on one side, there’s Gwen, the woman that Arthur loves, his future wife, the future Queen of Camelot, which is pretty much proven with this scene at this point, and on the other side is Merlin, how respected and loved and important and significant to Arthur must Merlin be to be seated next to him?

Everyone ABSOLUTELY knew.

How to Balance Pacing

Slowing down the pace:

1) Confuse your protagonist. Is there a puzzle or obstacle that your characters have to solve in order to proceed? Can you make it harder for them? Or does solving one problem lead to an even bigger one?

2) Steal something away from your protagonist that they need for their next step. The dragon rider can’t find his dragon. The knight that is about to ride into battle broke his sword moments before.

3.) Add subplots. For seamless pacing, jump back and forth between your different plots. Just when something big is about to be revealed in the main plot, steer your readers off course into a subplot so that they’re on the edge of their seat waiting for you to return them to the main plot. Do this with your subplots as well for a back and forth game of suspense.

4) Make your sentences longer with more details. For a scene or moment that you want to highlight, drag it out with heightened details. Think of it as a slow motion scene in a movie.

5) Introspection. Have your character think, reflect or consider their next steps. Inner monologues and consciousness can help the reader to understand misbeliefs, flaws and motivations of a character as well. (Doing this in the middle of a fast-paced scene will slow it down, so be cautious where you use this).

Quickening the pace:

1) Set up a real ticking clock. The time is counting down and your protagonist needs to finish something in a limited amount of time. A tomb raider has only five minutes to find the relic and escape before they’re shut in the cave forever.

2) Increase the pressure on your protagonist. Put obstacles in between them and their goals, have an ex return to town, cause drama between them and their friends, place their biggest fear right in front of them, increase the romantic/sexual tension between them and a love interest.

3) Shorten your sentences/details. Quick action scenes should have short and to the point descriptions. The more details you add, the slower it will feel. Picture an action scene in a movie… punches flying left and right. There is no time to think or observe tiny details.

4) Add a loose cannon. A character who is unpredictable and that the characters worry most about. The tension of what they might do next can help drive your pacing, make the story feel more unyielding.

5) Balance your elements. Make sure you don’t write in huge chunks of just one element. Scenes need to be balanced with dialogue, narrative, action, setting, character, etc. Your pacing can get thrown out of wack if one whole scene is purely a monologue and then the next is solely dialogue. Weave them together!

Merlin was caught doing magic at a time when Uther was still King. He’s in the dungeon now and awaiting his execution.

Arthur comes to him late in the evening expecting some answers but Merlin sees through Arthur’s tough demeanour that he’s confused, worried and scared, so it’s Merlin that tells him not to worry, that everything will be fine, that it is okay.

But Arthur only gets more agitated by Merlin’s calm behaviour:

Arthur: What am I supposed to tell your mother? Hunith?

Merlin: She’ll get a letter. That will explain everything.

Arthur: A letter? When did you had time to write a letter?

Merlin: I always write one preventively when I think it’s a close call. Then Gaius only has to send it.

Arthur: How… how many close calls have there been?

Merlin: A few.

Then Arthur storms off, at first randomly through the castle then he heads to the Court Physician and Merlin’s room. Gaius tries to stop him but the Prince of Camelot doesn’t take no for an answer, demanding the letters. It’s more than a few and Arthur opens and reads every single one about all the reckless times Merlin used magic for good. For him.

When he’s done processing it Arthur storms off again but this time straight to Morgana’s chambers.

She berates him for entering without even knocking, let alone permission.

Morgana: How dare you storming in here, don’t you have any manners??

Arthur: What are you planning?

Morgana: Excuse you, what?

Gwen awkwardly looks between them. Arthur looks at her as well.

Arthur: I know you are planning something to get him out. Merlin. What is it?

Morgana: Why would I tell you? If I were planning something. Hypothetically. Do you want to tell your father and get us executed too?

Arthur: So I can help you help him to get out!

Morgana: What?

Arthur: He wrote letters. To his mother. Every time he thought doing magic would get him killed. About all the things he did to save me. Save us. All of Camelot. Probably all of the five kingdoms and beyond as well.

Morgana: You read the letters to his mother?

Arthur: Not the point. There probably have been twice as many occasions he couldn’t write to his mother beforehand. Even he couldn’t see into the future, right?

Morgana: Would that be so bad? Seeing the Future?

Arthur: No, of course not. Maybe he can. I don’t know. Maybe he’s so calm down there because he’s already seen us breaking him out of there. So let’s do this.

Then, together they get him out.

Jared Padalecki Reflects on His 24-Year TV Run (‘I’m Pretty Tired’) and What’s Not Next After Walker Ends

“I’m grateful. Like, I’m not digging ditches. I’m not doing Red Cross work and saving human beings. But yeah, I’m pretty tired,” Padalecki says, adding that he’s “a little disillusioned about the state of the industry that I’ve loved and been employed with for 24 years. So I have a lot of thinking to do, and I have a lot of time to be with my wife and our kids, my friends, and think about where this industry is.”

Below, Padalecki opens up about Walker’s cancellation and why he doesn’t see another long-running TV series in his future.

TVLINE | Obviously, Supernatural was on a lot longer than Walker, but you were an executive producer on Walker, and you seemed to really bond with not only the cast but also the character of Cordell. So how has this letting go experience compared to that of Supernatural for you? With my experience on Gilmore Girls and Supernatural, we found ourselves in a similar situation, like around Seasons 3 and/or 4, where we were on the bubble, or there was a network change, or the head of the network changed, or there was a strike, or et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. So we didn’t know if we’d make it, and in both cases, the network believed in us and let us go as long as we wanted, and now, they’re like two of the top 10 most watched shows on Netflix, worldwide, every year. So I kind of, stupid me, I was hoping and assuming the same might happen… I knew there was a chance. There’s always a chance that the show’s not going to go, but I was like, “Well, we’re still the most watched. We’re not expensive.” So I didn’t know what to expect, and I haven’t yet had time to have closure with Walker.

With Supernatural, Jensen [Ackles] and I talked about it in our trailers on set for years, or during conventions in the green room, or at home, or flying together, or whatever, playing golf. We’d talk about it, and finally, Season 14, we kind of looked at each other, and we were like, “Hey, you know what, I think it’s time to go back to our families.” “Yeah, I think you’re right.” So we met with [CW President] Mark Pedowitz and said, like, “Hey, we’re going to do Season 15, but that’s it.” So we had a couple years, and we, ultimately, made the decision. I left Gilmore Girls to do Supernatural. Jensen and I decided to go ahead and let Supernatural end and give it a good send-off.

That was not the same situation with Walker, obviously. So I’m still kind of dealing with it, to be honest with you. I love the show. I’m so grateful for the four years that we had. I think back to during the pandemic, we were one of the first shows to go back to filming after COVID. We shot in October of 2020, and it was still masks and six feet away. There was just so much everybody went through: car accidents, and more COVIDs, and strep, and flu, and births, and deaths, and marriages, and divorces, and another strike, and this and that. So we had gone through so much together. We had weathered so many storms that I figured we had a lot more storms to weather. It’s not the way it worked out. But right now, I’m really focusing on how grateful I am, and will forever be, for the time I got to spend on Walker.

TVLINE | Given the circumstances, how do you feel about how the series ended and how the storylines were left off in the finale? To the credit of CW and CBS [Studios], when we shot the finale, when it was written, we didn’t know whether or not we were going to go for a fifth or further season, and they did not push us to try and wrap things up in a tidy little bow, which would’ve been really bad storytelling and a really bad episode. They kind of said, “Write the best episode you can. We don’t know if it’s going to go five years, or 10 years, or 30 years, or four years. So make it the best you can.” We knew, and [showrunner] Anna [Fricke] knew, and Blythe Ann Johnson knew — they wrote the finale together — that it was possible [it would end]. So when I think back on the finale, I think whether it was the end of Season 4 or the end of Season 104, I would’ve wanted all the characters to have a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, something to look forward to. And so, all the characters get a send-off and a salute of sorts, but it feels like a proper episode of television. It doesn’t feel like, “Oh, they are in a diner, and let’s just turn the cameras off.” But again, it’s so difficult to end. When you fall in love with a character, or several characters, or a story, for 69 episodes, like how do you end it?

So I’m grateful that we were able to create the best episode that we could without any incumbrances of like, “You better make sure everybody dies, or everybody gets a new job,” or something. Because how could you possibly end the story of all the Walkers and all their friends and been like, “Oh, yup, cool, don’t need to see them anymore”? Like, no matter how it ended, I would’ve wanted to see more of them, and so I’m very proud of the episode.

TVLINE | You went from Gilmore Girls straight to 15 seasons of Supernatural to Walker. Are you exhausted yet? I was exhausted 20 years ago. [Laughs] I am. I am exhausted. When I found out that Walker was not going to go for a fifth season, that was on a Tuesday, and I left for Europe on a Friday, part work, part fun. But I was in Europe for like three and a half weeks with family and a little bit of work, a lot of travel. So I’ve only been in the United States four days in the last month, and so, I haven’t really had time to fully grasp it. But yes, I’m tired. I’m tired. I’m grateful. Like, I’m not digging ditches. I’m not doing Red Cross work and saving human beings. But yeah, I’m pretty tired. I’m a little disillusioned about the state of the industry that I’ve loved and been employed with for 24 years. So I have a lot of thinking to do, and I have a lot of time to be with my wife and our kids, my friends, and think about where this industry is.

I haven’t had time to really reassess my life. I got into this industry when I was 17 years old on Gilmore Girls, and I, at the time, had my school schedule for UT Austin, and so, I thought I was going to do a couple episodes and go back to UT and pay off some student loans or something. That was 24 years ago, so I haven’t really had the time. And even during the writers’ strike in ’08, we were just waiting for it to end to go back and shoot Supernatural. The pandemic in 2020, I was just waiting for it to end, so I could go finish Supernatural and start Walker. The writers’ strike last year, just waiting for it to end, so we could pick up Walker.

I was in Europe for a while, and people would come up and take a picture and get an autograph or whatever and [ask], “So what’s next?” and for the first time in my entire life, I was like, “I don’t know.” “Oh, well, surely you have stuff. What’s next?” I was like, “Well, I don’t know.” They’re like, “Oh, you can’t tell us.” “No, no. It’s not I can’t tell you. I don’t have a job waiting for me,” which I’ve never said that in my adult life. So it’s interesting, and I’m going to surround myself with family and friends and loved ones, and try and figure out if I have anything else to offer that people want, and if I can be of service in storytelling, somehow, some way, then I guess I’ll put my proverbial cowboy hat back on and saddle up.

TVLINE | When you’re ready, though, do you imagine that you will want to do another TV series? I don’t think so. I don’t mind long TV, but I’ve heard it said many times, and I agree, that hour-long episodic television is the hardest job in the industry. If you’re Elijah Wood in Lord of the Rings, and it’s three three-hour long movies or whatever, it’s still like 18 months, you know? There’s an end in sight. With TV shows, sometimes it lasts 15 years, and sometimes they say, “Hey, where do you live? OK, we’re shooting in Vancouver.” You say, “But my family, my wife and kids are in Austin.” Like, “Well, good for them. They can come move up here. Here’s a thousand bucks to fly them out.” It’s not for the weak-spirited. Like, you really have to sacrifice a lot, and I’ve sacrificed everything I have to sacrifice for many, many years, and I think I’m at a point in my life where I want to spend more time with my wife and kids. If a job on a TV show comes up, like I’ve talked to Kripke about The Boys stuff, like, “Yeah, I’ll come play with you for a month. Yeah, I’ll come play with you for two months, for six weeks, or whatever,” or, “Yeah, I’ll come pop in a week out of every month for the next three months.”

But a classic TV contract is a six-year contract. My oldest son is 12, my middle son is 10, my daughter is seven. So if I sign a six-year contract, and they’re filming in Alaska, then I miss my son getting a driver’s license, I miss him graduating high school, I miss his first girlfriend or boyfriend, his first heartbreak, his basketball games, I miss my other son’s driving test, I miss my daughter turning into a teenager, and then I’m leaving [my wife] Gen, too. It’s a big commitment. So I don’t foresee myself doing that unless, again, it was in Austin, and I was the executive producer that could be involved in knowing the show and making sure the cast and crew all did it in as efficient a way as possible.

The Supernatural Script Hunt came from humble origins, a handful of fans banding together to collect and preserve our fandom history, making as many scripts as possible accessible to fans worldwide. Since acquiring our first script over five years ago, and then branching out to involve so many fans supporting the work in the years since, it was always our intent to give it all back, and then some.

When we began this project, the fandom collectively had six scripts from five episodes and a single network outline. In the five years since we bought our first script to add to that collection, we are ending the project with a total of 163 scripts from 147 episodes, casting sides from 50+ episodes, 50+ call sheets, arenas from 18 episodes, and other related documents. A complete list of items in our collection is on the SupernaturalWiki, for a closer look, click here.

The time has come for us to offer everyone a final chance to own their very own priceless souvenir of the show and cast we all love so dearly. In doing so, we also want to honor the largest (hopefully!) legacy of our fandom: using our collective power for good. Which is why we're offering up some very special scripts (and a few other items!) in our collection in a raffle to benefit Undue Medical Debt.

Our initial goal was to raise at least $10,000 so we can erase at least one million dollars in medical debt.  We've met that goal, our stretch goal is to get to $20,000 so we can erase at least two million dollars in medical debt.

  • You make a donation. They use data analytics to pinpoint the debt of those most in need: households that earn less than 4x the federal poverty level or whose debts are 5% or more of annual income.
  • Undue Medical Debt buys medical debt at a steep discount. They buy debt in bundles, millions of dollars at a time at a fraction of the original cost. This means your donation relieves about 100x its value in medical debt.
  • Together we wipe out medical debt. People across the country receive letters that their debt has been erased. They have no tax consequences or penalties to consider. Just like that, they're free of medical debt.

For every $10 you donate to Undue Medical Debt, you will 1) be erasing about $1,000 in medical debt and 2) be able to enter our raffle to win one of the items listed below.

I kind of suck at tagging, so I made this infographic to help make it easier.

Hey, thanks for making this!  I’ve never struggled with what to put in tags on my fic, but I’ve never been systematic about it, either–I just kind of put whatever.

The categories seem like a really useful way to think about it–not every fic will necessarily have something for each category, but it’s a good framework for either thinking of things to put, or making sure you don’t skip things that would be good to put.

So You've Finally Switched to Firefox: a Brief Guide to a Some Very Useful Add-Ons.

This post is inspired by two things, the first being the announcement by Google that the long delayed Manifest V3 which will kill robust adblocking will finally roll out in June 2024, and the second, a post written by @sexhaver in response to a question as to what adblockers and extensions they use. It's a very good post with some A+ information, worth checking out.

I love Firefox, I love the degree of customization it offers me as a user. I love how it just works. I love the built in security features like DNS over HTTPS, and I love just how many excellent add-ons are available. It is a better browser than Chrome in every respect, and of the many Chromium based browsers out there, only Vivaldi comes close.

There are probably many people out there who are considering switching over to Firefox but are maybe putting it off because they've got Chrome set up the way they like it with the extensions they want, and doing all that again for Firefox seems like a chore. The Firefox Add-on directory is less expansive than the Chrome Web Store (which in recent years has become overrun with garbage extensions that range from useless to active malware), but there is still a lot of stuff to sift through. That's where this short guide comes in.

I'm presently running 33 add-ons for Firefox and have a number of others installed but disabled. I've used many others. These are my picks, the ones that I consider essential, useful, or in some cases just fun.

Adblocking/Privacy/Security:

uBlock Origin: The single best adblocker available. If you're a power user there are custom lists and scripts you can find to augment it.

Privacy Badger: Not strictly necessary if you're also running uBlock, but it does catch a few trackers uBlock doesn't and replaces potentially useful trackers like comment boxes with click-to-activate placeholders.

Decentraleyes: A supplementary tool meant to run alongside uBlock, prevents certain sites from breaking when tracker requests are denied by serving local bundled files as replacement.

NoScript: The nuclear option for blocking trackers, ads, and even individual elements. Operates from a "trust no one" standpoint, you will need to manually enable elements yourself. Not recommended for casual users, but a fantastic tool for the power user.

Webmail Ad Blocker: The first of many webmail related add-ons from Jason Saward I will be recommending. Removes all advertising from webmail services like Gmail or Yahoo Mail.

Popup Blocker (Strict): Strictly blocks ALL pop up/new tab/new window requests from all website by default unless you manually allow it.

SponsorBlock: Not a fan of listening to your favourite YouTuber read advertisements for shitty products like Raycons or BetterHelp? This skips them automatically.

AdNauseam: I don't use this one but some people prefer it. Rather than straight up blocking ads and trackers, it obfuscates data by injecting noise into the tracker surveillance infrastructure. It clicks EVERY ad, making your data profile incomprehensible.

User-Agent Switcher: Allows you to spoof websites attempting to gather information by altering your browser profile. Want to browse mobile sites on desktop? This allows you to do it.

Bitwarden: Bitwarden has been my choice of password manager since LastPass sold out and made their free tier useless. If you're not using a password manager, why not? All of my passwords look like this: $NHhaduC*q3VhuhD&scICLKjvM4rZK5^c7ID%q5HVJ3@gny I don't know a single one of them and I use a passphrase as a master password supplemented by two-factor-authentication. Everything is filled in automatically. It is the only way to live.

Proton Pass: An open source free password manager from the creators of Proton Mail. I've been considering moving over to it from Bitwarden myself.

Webmail/Google Drive:

Checker Plus for Gmail: Provides desktop notifications for Gmail accounts, supports managing multiple accounts, allows you to check your mail, read, mark as read or delete e-mails at a glance in a pop-up window. An absolutely fabulous add-on from Jason Saward.

Checker Plus for Google Drive: Does for your Google Drive what Checker Plus for Gmail does for your Gmail.

Checker Plus for Google Calendar: The same as the above two only this time for your Google Calendar.

Firefox Relay: An add-on that allows you to generate aliases that forward to your real e-mail address.

Accessibility:

Dark Reader: Gives every page on the internet a customizable Dark Mode for easier reading and eye protection.

Read Aloud: A text to speech add-on that reads pages with the press of a button.

Zoom Page WE: Provides the ability to zoom in on pages in multiple ways: text zoom, full page zoom, auto-fit etc.

Mobile Dyslexic: Not one I use, but I know people who swear by it. Replaces all fonts with a dyslexia friendly type face.

Utility:

ClearURLs: Automatically removes tracking data from URLs.

History Cleaner: Automatically deletes browser history older than a set number of days.

Feedbro RSS Feed Reader: A full standalone reader in your browser, take control of your feed and start using RSS feeds again.

Video Download Helper: A great tool for downloading video files from websites.

Snap Link Plus: Fan of Wikipedia binge holes? Snap Link allows to drag select multiple hyperlink and automatically open all of them in new tabs.

Copy PlainText: Copy any text without formatting.

EPUBReader: Read .epub files from within a browser window.

Tab Stash: A no mess, no fuss way to organize groups of tabs as bookmarks. I use it as a temporary bookmark tool, saving sessions or groups of tabs into "to read" folders.

Tampermonkey/Violentmonkey: Managers for installing and running custom user scripts. Find user scripts on OpenUserJS or Greasy Fork, there's an entire galaxy out there of ingenious and weird custom user scripts out there, go discover it.

Browsing & Searching:

Speed Dial 2: A new tab add-on that gives you easy access to your favourite sites.

Unpaywall: Whenever you come across a scholarly article behind a paywall, this add-on will search through all the free databases for an accessible and non-paywalled version of the text.

Web Archives: Come across a dead page? This add-on gives you a quick way to search for cached versions of the page on the Wayback Machine, Google Cache, Archive.is and others.

Bypass Paywalls: Automatically bypasses the paywalls of major websites like those for the New York Times, New Yorker, the Financial Times, Wired, etc.

Simple Translate: Simple one-click translation of web pages powered by Google Translate.

Search by Image: Reverse search any image via several different search engines: Google Image, TinEye, Yandex, Bing, etc.

Website Specific:

PocketTube: Do you subscribe to too many YouTube channels? Would you like a way to organize them? This is your answer.

Enhancer for Youtube: Provides a suite of options that make using YouTube more pleasant: volume boost, theatre mode, forced quality settings, playback speed and mouse wheel volume control.

Augmented Steam: Improves the experience of using Steam in a browser, see price histories of games, take notes on your wishlist, make wish listed games and new DLC for games you own appear more visible, etc.

Return YouTube Dislikes: Does exactly what it says on the package.

BlueBlocker: Hate seeing the absolute dimmest individuals on the planet have their replies catapulted to the top of the feed because they're desperate to suck off daddy Elon sloppy style? This is for you, it automatically blocks all Blue Checks on Twitter. I've used it to block a cumulative 34,000 Blue Checks.

Batchcamp: Allows for batch downloading on Bandcamp.

XKit Rewritten: If you're on Tumblr and you're not using whichever version of XKit is currently available, I honestly don't know what to say to you. This newest version isn't as fully featured as the old XKit of the golden age, but it's been rewritten from the ground up for speed and utility.

Social Fixer for Facebook: I once accidentally visited Facebook without this add-on enabled and was immediately greeted by the worst, mind annihilating content slop I had ever had the misfortune to come across. Videos titled "he wanted her to get lip fillers and she said no so he had bees sting her lips", and AI photos of broccoli Jesus with 6000 comments all saying "wow". Once I turned it on it was just stuff my dad had posted and updates from the Radio War Nerd group.

BetterTTV: Makes Twitch slightly more bearable.

Well I think that's everything. You don't have to install everything here, or even half of it, but there you go, it's a start.

Addendum!

I forgot to add, Firefox has skins and themes! And many of them are good! And of the many small creators making themes and skins for Firefox, my favourite is MaDonna an 85 year old great grandmother who's just making browser skins for fun. She's made thousands of them. I'm using one of her creations at this very moment, Dark Polygon.

The whole goodbye scene between Colter and Russell is so wholesome to me because it shows how deeply they care about each other. Colter dropping everything to tend to Russell's bullet wound and patching him up with tenderness and care. Russell's expressions as he tries to stay strong for his brother through the pain. Feeling indebted to him for rescuing Doug and for keeping him on his feet. Russell made the selfless decision to go back and take care of unfinished business because he knows as long as Solango's around, he'll endanger his friends and family. Russell has got a dark past we don't know about. He served in the military and now operates as a civilian contractor so he has done a lot of dark shit in his past that he regrets to protect his country. He wants to be discreet about killing Solango because he will not stop going after Doug and the other men in his unit. Russell knows that and he's not going to let him walk away from this with his life intact. I think there is a darker edge to Russell we haven't seen yet in terms of his military past and hope that gets explored in future seasons.

The point is he doesn't let the burden of his past eat him up inside and he still finds a way to continue on, to hope for the best for those around him. He puts Colter at ease knowing that he'll see him again. He gives him hope that there is escape from this life. That there is hope in the horizon for the both of them. Russell already has his retirement plan in motion - he wants to open up his own brewery. He has found a way to escape his family past to the point that it no longer defines him. Colter still hasn't figured that out because he lets the heavy burden of the past hang over him. All his life he believed Russell was the one that killed their father and he believes there is more to the story than his mother or his siblings want him to believe. Colter struggled to let go of that resentment for most of his life and when Russell comes back and leaves again, Colter begins to feel an aching sadness because he's finally got his brother back. They get to be brothers again. Colter wants him to stay but deep down he knows Russell has unfinished business to take care of and lets him be. Colter is struggling to let go of the past and by Russell giving him reassurance that he'll see him again, he gives him hope that maybe there is an exit plan from all this. That Colter doesn't need to spend the rest of his life travelling the country in his trailer. He wants to believe that there is more for him out there and Russell inspired him to take up that sentiment because he has chosen to let go of his resentment of him after all these years and has made amends with him. Colter has had a little taste of it and now he wants his family back together. He realises that they can be brothers again.

As well I thought this would be interesting to bring up the colour symbolism here with Colter and Russell as I think it tells us a lot about where they are at this stage of their lives.

Throughout the episode, Russell wears a green jacket. Green symbolises growth and harmony as well as fertility and renewal. This shows that Russell has grown after all these years of being a prisoner to his father's paranoia and has finally made peace with his past. This has made him more happier as he has aspirations about settling down. Something we didn't think was possible in the Shaw family. Russell gets to have a second chance to live his life in a peaceful and safe environment that isn't uprooted in conflict or isolation.

In contrast, Colter wears a black jacket. The colour of black represents death and mourning as well as fear and mystery. Colter is the complete opposite of Russell and can't quite let go of his family past. It continues to haunt him and brings him nothing but regret and heartache. Colter is obsessed with finding out what happened to their father and he wants to bring the true killer to justice. He finds out early on in the episode that Russell wasn't the one that pushed the dad and he believes someone else did it and was in cahoots with their mother. The first step in his journey is forgiving Russell and he achieved that. But he is still mourning from the repercussions of his past and he wants to make right by travelling the country and finding people who can't be found because he failed to save his father years ago. There is a mystery to Colter Shaw because he just drifts from place to place in his trailer, helping people and seeking rewards and people struggle to understand his motives. What he really wants as a person. After cases, people offer to do nice and normal things for him like Bobby and Reenie inviting him to dinner and he respectfully declined. He was invited to the wedding of the groom he saved and he respectfully declined. Colter longs to do these things, to be a normal person but the burden of his past holds him back and he struggles to let go so he hasn't really figured out an escape plan for himself because he doesn't think he is meant to have one. The only commitment he manages to make it to is his dinner with Dory and he is wearing a white shirt which symbolises cleanliness and perfection showing that he is trying to be his best for his family even though he struggles to make right with the past. By having his family back together, he gets the renewed hope that maybe they have a chance to be together again. Dory pleads with Colter to make up with Russell as she wants her brothers to be back together again and when he makes amends with Russell, it offers him closure he never thought he'd need because now he is trying to make right with his family past. For the first time ever, he has the hope that his family can be together again because he isn't running away from them anymore. He kept his promise to Dory and reunited with Russell. This is only the beginning of his journey to letting go and being on good terms with his siblings checks boxs off his list. This is him making right with his past in big ways and no longer avoiding it because he finally puts everything aside to work with Russell and it is a healing experience because for the first time he has hope that things can get better. That he is capable of change and turning his life around by not holding anything against his family and letting go of all grudges. His only goal now is finding out who really killed his dad and then he'll be free of this burden.

The episode ends with Russell giving Colter his prized knife that his father gave him as a parting gift at the motel. An object that Doug risked everything to return to Russell which shows just how important it means to him. Russell is giving a part of himself to Colter. Keep it safe for me the note says as it shows that Russell trusts Colter the most. He no longer needs it because he isn't defined by his past anymore. He doesn't need to protect himself anymore, he is past committing bloodshed. Colter is still out there doing what he does and Russell gives him the knife as a way of protecting himself because Russell knows that Colter can look after himself and he doesn't need his older brother to look after him anymore. Russell's at peace with that and he's happy for Colter to carry on without him. He is looking out for Colter and by giving him the knife, Colter has a part of his brother with him protecting him always. I just think it's beautiful as Colter has come a long way from hating his brother to forgiving him. By carrying the knife, Colter has had growth and he is now on the steady path to healing. To letting go of the past and not letting it define his future.

Thanks for listening to my analysis because I love the complexity of the Shaw brothers and I could talk about them for ages I am so obsessed. If anyone has anything else to add, please let me know.

A really extra way to announce you got a haircut

Or a very inspiring way for a popular Black British actress many people look up to to reveal she cut off all her damaged, processed, hair (the part many of us fear the most) and decided to start her natural hair journey, at the age of 40 (yes y'all she's 42. I don't see it either).

But then again if you don't get that, the post wasn't for you anyway, so that's fair. That's fair.

Also, as I mentioned this post is two years old but things are going very well 😍

I know a lot of people don't get it whenever they see posts about Black hair. It's just wild to me when I remember there are people who've never had any significant thoughts or cultural concerns about their hair.

My hair doesn't grow in the back of my head. I keep it shaved because it doesn't grow, not to be on trend like some tend to think. My hair/scalp was damaged when I was 13 because an aunt put a strong perm in my head. For years I had sores on my scalp from chemical burns.

It's a big deal. We're in a beautiful era of Black women in all walks of life embracing their natural hair and it should be celebrated and encouraged.
