As the charismatic son of a U.S. President, Perez, 32, gains royal status when he becomes a partner to a dashing British prince (Nicholas Galitzine) in the hit rom-com. The fan-favorite role has earned him supermarket-level fame. "The funniest thing is when people call me Alex in a grocery store," he grins. As for his preterred date night: "I'm so chill with cooking at home, putting cell phones away and being outside." Next up is Red, White & Royal Blue 2. On his wish list? "I feel like we ve solidified the love part, but we haven't really seen them live together.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What are the key ingredients to a good Supernatural season? JARED PADALECKI: Some of my favorite seasons have dealt with a very real threat, the introduction of a new character, and a little humor spattered throughout — or, as is the case with the Scooby episode, something outside the box. Supernatural since day one with my mom and my girlfriend burning on the ceiling has dealt with some pretty dark subjects, so you have to flip the script and laugh and make fun of yourself. JENSEN ACKLES: There’s got to be a good struggle with the brothers, either with each other or with a very good foe. Having a good big bad is always key, but also having a clear mission is vital. PADALECKI: We’ve had a few seasons that went a bit too far left or right, but now the bosses have figured out that there’s a recipe that works. They’ll add new spices and mix it up, but they don’t try and reinvent the wheel. The addition of Alexander [Calvert] this year has just been phenomenal. His character is not someone we’ve ever encountered before. ACKLES: I’ve always loved when the motivation shifts between brothers: The push and pull of Sam trying to get Dean aboard or Dean not wanting to go that direction, that constant struggle, and them ultimately finding a way to make it work and doing what’s right and fighting the good fight.

At what point into a season do you get a sense of whether the story works? ACKLES: Probably episode 4 or 5. Because a lot of the groundwork for the season is laid early on in those first five episodes and then 6 and 7 and 8, somewhere in there we start having those standalone episodes, which are always great too. By then I feel like I’ve got a good gauge of tone and where we’re headed that season. And then that gives me an idea of where I need to take Dean. PADALECKI: Episodes 9 and 10 of the season are where I get a sense of how I feel about it and the arc in general. By the time we’re filming 9 and 10, we’ve aired a few episodes, we’ve been able to gauge the audience reaction and the on-screen chemistry and whether it exists. Right around the midseason finale, it feels like the writers and our editors and producers have been watching the scenes, seen what works, seen what doesn’t, and are really fine-tuning it to figure out where they want to go with it. That’s also when I get a sense of, “Okay cool, this is gonna work.”

What’s been your favorite episode of season 13? PADALECKI: I loved “Tombstone” and “Lost and Found.” I always love our season premieres. Everyone’s been waiting, including the actors, to find out what’s happening. There’s an almost tangible buzz on set — we can almost feel the eyes of the fans on us. And “Scoobynatural,” obviously. ACKLES: The “Scoobynatural” episode [which airs March 29] was such a unique experience. I’ve got to go with Scooby.

Looking back, which Supernatural season is underappreciated? ACKLES: Season 10 had Demon Dean, [who was] underappreciated and underused. PADALECKI: Season 7 has “Death’s Door,” which might be my favorite episode, but I’ll go to season 1. We went off in so many different directions. The writers really explored a lot of avenues that set the stage for what we’ve been able to do since then. There was a lot of good television that was made because we hadn’t yet made the rules.

The character is sort of an Indiana Jones kind of guy. His daughter thinks that he left her but what he really did is he went out to try to get rid of all these bad things that are in this world to protect her. I’ve been able to shoot a couple episodes already, and the cast is so much fun, and they’re so excited. It’s great to be back on set with these guys and play a character that that has an impact on the trajectory of the storyline of the main character. It’s great. I think I’ve got two more episodes to go.

“I did a pilot called Supernatural, and hopefully it’ll be on Warner Brothers this fall…”

Jared interview for House of Wax, filmed prior to Supernatural getting picked up, setting this around March or April of 2005. (includes outtakes that the editor probably meant to remove? they’re very cute)

One nice thing about Mitch Pileggi is that he can do Creation panels for both Supernatural and Walker!

Jensen Ackles recently came onto the “Walker” scene to direct an episode. What was that experience like, and what kind of energy and creative vision did he bring to the director’s chair?

[Jokingly] It brought back bad memories. That was nothing but bad memories. I swear, having the two of them together, ganging up on me, it was relentless, and it was uncalled for. It was unnecessary … No, it was so much fun having Jensen there because he’s part of the family, and to have his face there, and his energy, and his humor, and everything that comes with it, was absolutely brilliant. I was so happy that he came in and did an episode, and I hope he gets to come in and do more. But to have those two knuckleheads together was … Phew, you can only imagine.

[Laughs] What did they do to you?

Nothing. They didn’t do anything to me — well, yeah, they did. They like to pick on me. It gives them joy, and if it makes them happy, then it makes me happy. So there you go.

Did they prank you or anything?

No. It’s our relationship, and how goofy we are, and how silly we get, and it’s not only when Jensen’s there. This cast and this crew, it’s pretty amazing. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but this is the most amazing cast and crew that, I believe, I’ve worked with. I’ve been doing this for four years, and this is a hell of a way for me to end it.

What was that dynamic like between them, going from co-stars to actor versus director?

Jensen directed episodes of “Supernatural,” so it was something that they had … It was already in their makeup, so it was a natural thing.

Do you have any favorite memories from working on the “Supernatural” set?

It was fun. I was working with a lot of the guys, [and] a lot of the crew on “Supernatural” were “X-Files” crew, so it was a real treat. Kim Manners was there when I came and did the first episode, so I got to spend a little bit of time with him before he passed, and I’m so grateful for that.

Most of all, was [that] I met Jared Padalecki. The day that I met Jared Padalecki was a very important day in my life because he is one of the most outstanding individuals that I’ve ever come across, and I’ve come across a lot of people in my 70 years. I told him the other day, I said, “One of the best days of my life is the day that I met you.”

You wouldn’t believe some of the things that he’s done for me since we’ve been doing this. His brother did my shoulder. I had shoulder replacement. They gave me a couple of episodes off. Jared and Anna were like, “You’ve got some time off. We’re going to give you time off, get your shoulder fixed.” I had Dr. Jeff Padalecki, do my shoulder surgery.

His brother replaced my shoulder, and he’s one of the best surgeons I’ve ever encountered because he did an amazing job. I got a new shoulder, and it’s my good shoulder now. Jared and Genevieve [Padalecki] took a big portion of the cast in during the [Texas] snowpocalypse last year.

There were 15 of us in his house. 15 people and five dogs, and they took us all in without a blink of [an] eye and took care of us for a week until we were able to go home, and that’s what it’s like on this set. The atmosphere and the chemistry between us on this set [are] something I’ve never experienced before. There [are] no divas. There’s no drama. This is the happiest set I’ve ever been on, and this crew is frigging outstanding. They’re stellar, and this cast is … Like I said, I’m so blessed to be, at this point, doing this in my career. It’s pretty awesome. I got nothing but good things to say about all of this.

Can you still remember the first time you ever went on set for Supernatural?

“I can. It was a library scene, and we were filming in Glendale, Los Angeles. It was in a school and Jared Padalecki and I were doing some research on monsters. I think that was the first scene we ever had together.”

After 15 seasons, did it feel like that was truly the end or was there always something in the back of your mind for the future?

“I think we all felt like it wasn’t the final goodbye, rather, putting the book down for now and maybe reading something else in the library and seeing what happens in a few years. We’re taking a run by opening the universe up again and creating an original story. So we’ll see where that takes us.”

Why did now feel like the right time to pick the book up again then?

“I think all of us, the network included, were always trying to figure out if there was any way to expand the story. There were a few attempts that just didn’t land in the way that everybody wanted them to and then it felt like it wasn’t going to happen. As we were filming the final two shows of the season, COVID struck. It was so painful because when we came back, all of our crew had masks on. We couldn’t touch, we couldn’t hug, we didn’t get to have a wrap party. It was like the worst way to end a 15-year run. We all felt that we’ve got to keep this fire burning in some way, shape, or form and so it was during the COVID break that the idea kind of came about. I’ve always thought that if there was going to be something tethered to the mothership, it had to be based on a character that is integral to the story of Supernatural. And so I thought, what better than the mum and dad who created these two brothers? Let’s take it back to when they were young, how does that story go?”

The new show, The Winchesters, follows an episodic structure too. What is it about this formula that appeals to you, as opposed to film?

“I don’t know what the ending is. With a film, you’ve got your beginning, middle and end. It’s all there in the script, but with a series, I don’t know where I’m going to go. It’s a journey where the future is undefined.”
