the MORE supernatural tries to deliberately do something the less it works. so much of supernatural is just generative absence. the angel wings work so fucking well because we only see them a tiny zero point something percent of the time, and then only as shadow. the hellhounds were so terrifying because it was an absence that could rip you to shreds at any moment and they were simultaneously everywhere and nowhere, this kind of ephemeral horror capable of killing in an all-too-visceral way. absence wreaking violence on the flesh. and as soon as they bring in the stupid holy fire hellhound glasses it's just like......... Oh that's just a dog. it's just a bad cgi dog. utterly forgettable. like. supernatural CANNOT look straight-on at itself or it all falls apart and the best parts of supernatural are truly always the spaces n pockmarks n time gaps n peripheral shots you do not, cannot directly see
