I love early seasons supernatural aesthetics so much. The isolated highways, funky motel rooms, neon signs, shiny guns and shiny cars, leather jackets, old books, through a film camera lens in seasons one and two, makes for such a specific atmosphere. It transfers the isolation Sam and Dean experience so well, cramped into the seats of a 67’ Chevy impala, claustrophobically un-alone while individually lonely. The nasty, sometimes created with horrible special effects, monsters really do look monstrous, unsettling more than outright terrifying. With yellow eyes, in dirty clothes, glitching and pale. The whole colour palette is grey-ish and cold, you almost feel the contrasted darkness, the distrust, the nagging belief that something wicked may be hiding behind every corner, behind every corner of your own self as well. Idk. The blood looks dark, the sulfur looks sickeningly yellow, the skin looks unnaturally pale. It’s all so horror-coded, and gives such an atmosphere of instability in your own existence in the world, which aligns with the themes of the seasons. This atmosphere, to me, makes it a better horror show than if it had had better special effects and scarier monsters. Because the horrifying is in the daily existence, in how you are, rather than what you face.
That's why early seasons were the best. The atmosphere, and the aesthetics alone were most of the draw. The later seasons just couldn't pull off the effect anymore, they lost something. It no longer felt like a horror show.

it’s so surreal to me that supernatural went on for so long that the final arc of the show was literally the main characters screaming and begging and fighting for freedom and rest from a controlling and obsessive author/god who had been writing their lives up until that point, who simply would not let them die. it went on for so long that it went from being a show where the two leads used phones with antennae and made references to myspace, to being a show where they literally referenced the “sir, this is a wendy’s” meme and dean said “galaxy brained”. it went from being a dark and gritty show shot on film to being a show shot on digital where the saturation was so bright that it looked like a sitcom even at night. after 15 seasons, all the fear and grittiness and tension had been sucked out of the narrative. it devolved from story about choosing free will over destiny into a story about whether or not having free will is even possible after you’ve discovered that god has personally controlled your whole life. the transformation from “classic kripke era” supernatural into “network controlled never-ending” supernatural was literally played out in the storyline of the show itself. it’s unbelievable.
"Saving People, Hunting things" - (2024)
My tribute to Supernatural Season 1. I can't believe the show will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year.
s1 is just. i love you grainy unfocused shots of cemeteries and foggy roads no one travels. i love you john’s journal as a bible. i love you sam driving the impala casually with dean sleeping in the passenger seat. i love you dark motels with neon signs and dusty libraries with huge lore books. i love you side character serving as a mirror to the winchesters. i love you cleaning guns and wounds and sharpening of knives and gas stations and flip phones and laptop stickers. i love you small towns where time stands still with something unknowable and hungry lurking in the shadows. i love you angry psychic kid sam and dean trying his best with a leather jacket too big for him. i love you looming presences of john and mary. i love you homemade and flawed equipment. i love you horror and tragedy and blood. i love you dramatic lighting and silhouettes. i love you folklore and local legends. i love you -

imo one of supernatural's greatest weaknesses is what i'm going to call its locational homogeneity. like. obviously this is largely a side effect of filming a show set all over the united states in the same small area of canada for 15 years but there's just a certain sameness to every location and every episode that's uncanny at best and breaks immersion at worst. they should have gone all in on southern gothic horror and spooky old northeastern coastal towns and rural midwestern isolation and instead it's just episode after episode of identical suburbs with arbitrary location titles slapped over them. the seasons never change. the weather is always mild, never with extreme enough temperature or precipitation to require a change from the standard jacket-over-flannel-over-tee costuming even when we see snow on the ground. this episode is set in the summer in idaho. no, wait, it's set in the winter in kentucky. this episode is set in the summerfallwinterspring in kansachusettohiowa. sam and dean travel all over the country and yet stay completely still. supernatural shows us a massive world and it does not turn and absolutely no one lives in it.
That is part of the horror of America though. They even touch on it in that one episode where Cas is hiding from Naomi by flicking between Biggerson's. It was the sameness that made it impossible for them to figure out which one he was at before he moved to another one. Likewise with the rest of the show, all the motels are basically the same, except for the theme of the decor. All the diners are the same. The truck stops, the bathrooms, the hospitals, the suburban neighborhoods and houses. This is what America feels like. Sure the vistas change, the plants, the temps and weather, but it's still all so much the same that it is easy to get lost in it and to feel like there is no escape. So while this sameness was the result of filming practicalities and limitations, they were able to use it to play into the horror elements of the show.
something i love about supernatural is that you can't immediately tell what season an image is from based on dean but you CAN tell based on what hairstyle iteration sam is on
Is there any more info on where in the timeline of SPN canon they wanna set the revival on?
My source told me about the pitch before Jared talked about it at jibcon in August of '22. Like Jared said later at that convention, they were thinking about setting it between 15.19 and 15.20. Obviously, that's going to be harder as they get older, so that's why they also talked about being sent back from heaven.
The source that knew about it before jib22 said it was not pitched through CMP, which I thought was very interesting. It would be through a production company of WBD's choosing with both Js as executive producers. The source said that TW was the only thing that CMP had on the books, which proved to be true.
Since then, both of the Js have talked in more detail about it, sometimes in m&gs. I'll share what I can. It's something that they both want to do. The brass at WBD have totally changed since it was pitched. They don't have the allies that they used to, but Supernatural is still an IP that makes money.
Any reboot would not be on the CW. The most likely options are WBD platform, Amazon or Netflix.
J2 insist on EP control. They are not going to let anyone else tell them how Sam and Dean would act.
Imagine being a true-crime fan in the SPN universe and wondering how the hell the general public keeps forgetting about how Sam and Dean have been wanted by the FBI and pronounced dead on several different occasions, like..?
