Midam Appreciation Week Day 5: Out of a nightmare

Archangels didn't dream, mostly because they didn't sleep.

While possessed, a vessel also didn't sleep or dream, which was perhaps a disadvantage because they might miss some nice dreams. But then, it also helped to keep nightmares at bay, which might otherwise plague them at night.

This meant that when Michael was there, Adam was protected from his subconscious. But when he left, as he did sometimes to help out in Heaven, so that Raphael's expression would become a little less pinched when looking at him...

Suffice it to say that Adam had a few choice memories his brain desperately wanted to process. So more often than not, when he laid down to sleep, images of the monsters wearing his mother's face and that of a policeman came to visit him. There was usually chasing in those dreams, even though Adam had never had a chance to run away from the monsters, seeing as how they had overpowered him, strapped him to a table, and torn into his flesh.

Type: Fluff / Character Study (Sort of?)

Michael’s opinion on humans had definitely changed over time.

In the beginning - before the actual beginning - he didn’t have much of an opinion, only orders, God’s orders. God had created everything, so Michael had to love everything - humans included.

Then Lucifer brought questions, God himself abandoned heaven - abandoned everything and everyone. The angels were left with nothing but themselves, it was maddening.

So Michael shut himself away, silently waiting for the day his father would return to teach them once more.

A foolish wish he thinks, now looking back at it.

At the same time he distanced himself from all of the lords creations, he didn’t exactly blame them, but as time went on he held a grudge for all the extra time God had spent with humanity rather than his children, his creations turned soldiers of heaven.

So he didn’t exactly like them. But he didn’t exactly dislike them. More like begrudgingly resented them.

But now, watching as Adam’s lungs expanded and shrunk with every quiet breath he took, watching as Adam’s right arm is hugged tightly around his neck and his left is thrown across Michael’s torso, watching as Adam nuzzles his face into Michael’s shoulder mumbling something unintelligible, watching as their bodies bathe in the darkness from the glow of the tv screen.

He wonders how he hadn’t spent more time simply, watching.

Michael admits that he loved to watch Adam sleep.

It’s irrational he knows but, there’s something about, not just Adam’s body but, how his mind was so vulnerable like this.

Michael silently wonders how humanity survived this long. Considering that they’re left completely open to all danger when they’re like this, in their state of resting, but he’s not complaining, because now he gets to watch over Adam and protect him as he sleeps.

No other human would Michael possibly care about as much as he does Adam. Adam was made for him as a spare, but he chose Adam.

He will protect Adam. Keep him safe and far away from any more danger that he shouldn’t have to ever endure in the first place because Adam is good.

He will make sure that Adam is happy. Because when he gets that dumb smile on his face about a random mundane human thing it’s Michael’s happiness too.

He loves nobody and nothing but Adam. The idea that Adam is the exception to not just all men, but all of man kind, is a title given to those worthy of Michael’s love and devotion.

All he wants is Adam. Because….Adam, is all that Michael needs, now and until the forever ongoing abyss of infinity.

He still doesn’t like humanity - most of them - but Adam is the exception.

Adam has always been the exception.
