The butterfly is a symbol of change and transformation, which references the metamorphosis Ella undergoes from abused, ragged servant to dazzling, admired princess. Its use may also be a reference to the urban legend that butterflies live for a single day, as the fairy godmother’s magic can only last for one night, and so, like a butterfly, Ella’s time at the ball is short-lived, but no less beautiful for it.
